According to legend, the Ark of the Covenant was laid to rest in the Aksumite Kingdom, which is part of an area now known as Ethiopia. The Ark was brought to the kingdom by Menelik the First. The Foundation Aksum Cigar was created to honor the Aksumite Kingdom. The cigar’s box and band features an image of Ras Makonnen who is considered one of Ethiopia’s greatest leaders. The Aksum Claro cigar features a light-tan Ecuadorian Sumatra-seed wrapper that drapes a USA Connecticut Broadleaf binder, and filler leaves from Esteli and Jalapa, which are two of Nicaragua’s top tobacco growing regions. This carefully selected three-nation blend offers a medium-strength smoking experience that’s rich in flavor. The cigars are handmade at AJ Fernandez’s Tabacalera Fernandez factory in Nicaragua.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Ecuador is the perfect place to grow wrappers, because it is located on the Equator! And it has rich soils too. The weather conditions, with a nearly permanent cloudy sky, provide a natural shade, protecting the wrapper plants from sunshine and allowing the tobacco to grow thin and light. Ecuador supplies Connecticut and Sumatra type wrappers to many cigar factory in the world.

The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
USA Connecticut Broadleaf tobacco is grown in the Connecticut River Valley area. The soil in this region is of glacial origins. The tobacco is dark, oily, flavorful, and aromatic. It is used primarily as a maduro wrapper, but it also serves as an excellent binder.

Recently smoked the Madurai of this. Like it, but thought it was as unique compared to other cigars in their line. Then I had this one and wasn’t expecting as much since I’m not usually partial to Sumatra seed wrappers. This thing is great. Very interesting flavor. Good spice. Can tell the broadleaf is still involved, but surprisingly light for that combo. Will be buying a few more of these.

To start, I love a good pigtail cap. This one tore right off and provided a perfect draw. The sumatra wrapper and broadleaf binder shine with a hint of pepper and spices from the filler (Nicaraguan with Corojo I would imagine). I got some sweetness and earthiness with pepper mostly. As the cigar progressed, it gave some cocoa, lemongrass at times, and coffee flavors. Definitely a medium-full cigar with loads of flavor and complexity.

Foundation is really killing it with their new releases and the claro is my favorite from the Metapa line. The first taste you get is a wonderful spicy wood with a hint of coffee. Burn and draw are perfect. The spice builds nicely as you make your way through the experience. This one is definitely box worthy.
