Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Ecuador is the perfect place to grow wrappers, because it is located on the Equator! And it has rich soils too. The weather conditions, with a nearly permanent cloudy sky, provide a natural shade, protecting the wrapper plants from sunshine and allowing the tobacco to grow thin and light. Ecuador supplies Connecticut and Sumatra type wrappers to many cigar factory in the world.

The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.
Filler (or “tripa” in Spanish) is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar. The Dominican Republic is considered one of the most premier tobacco growing countries in the world. The filler tobacco grown in this Caribbean island nation ranges from mild to full bodied. Olor Dominicano and Piloto Cubano are the main types of tobacco grown in the Dominican Republic.

Smooth and mellow from the start, with a pleasant nutty character followed by roasted earth, hints of espresso, and mild spice. Medium-bodied with good construction and a very easy draw. The burn was decent, though not quite as even as I would have liked. Around the halfway point, the cigar really started to pick up, becoming fuller, heavier, and warmer, with the flavors from the first half becoming more pronounced. Toward the end, it lost some of that initial smoothness and became noticeably hotter, but overall it was an enjoyable, easy-smoking cigar with a nice progression.

The Karatoba is the newest addition to the Oz Family Cigars line by Tim Ozgener, who is best known for his time with CAO (A company his father started back in the late 60's). The reddish dark brown Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper reminds me a lot of the Oliva Melanio. It looked absolutely flawless and velvety smooth with barely any veins or scuffs at all. You are greeted with some strong spice in the first quarter. Notes of roasted peanuts, baking spice, and a touch of cinnamon sweetness to round it all out. For me, the spice was a little unwelcoming. In the last half of the cigar, the spice is somewhat muted, and you are just in cruise control from there. Super smooth, creamy, but bursting with flavor. The burn and draw were impeccable. One light and I was good to go for the next hour and twenty minutes. This is a very nice medium-plus cigar paired well with coffee or an aged rum. Don't miss out on this one.

The Ozgener Karatoba is one of those blends that really shows off Tim Ozgener’s knack for balance and refinement. The construction is excellent—dense, even pack, slow burn, and a draw that’s open but not loose. Midway through, the cigar opens up with a subtle sweetness, almost like cocoa powder, while the spice smooths into more of a warm baking spice. It’s the kind of profile that feels familiar yet elevated, a nod to classic Nicaraguan blends but with a more polished finish. This isn’t a “knock you down” powerhouse, but it’s not a lightweight either. I’d put it in that medium to medium-plus range, a great option for someone who appreciates depth of flavor without overwhelming strength. For me, the Karatoba smokes like a blend made by someone who respects tradition but isn’t afraid to put a modern spin on it—and that’s exactly what makes it memorable.
