H. Upmann Cigars

H. Upmann stands proud as one of the oldest cigar brands still being produced today. Hermann Upmann was a German banker who first came to Cuba in 1843 to arrange business deals for a German import/export firm. Once he saw the opportunity for importing avenues via tobacco, Upmann bought a local cigar factory in Havana, and began producing his own cigars less than a year later in 1844 under the H. Upmann moniker. Although his bank eventually closed in the 1920s, the cigar brand still continued throughout the years under different ownership and remains prominent today, made in the Dominican Republic by Altadis USA and in Cuba by Habanos S.A.. Rumor has it that H. Upmann was the first brand to package cigars in cedar boxes, and that is very, very likely to be the case. Pun intended.
