While Erik Espinosa’s Laranja Reserva Azulejo is the third installment in the popular Laranja series, it is full of firsts. Its imposing but savory dark chocolatey Ecuadorian Sumatra-seed maduro wrapper is the first time Espinoza has used this capa on a regular release cigar. Underneath is a Brazilian Arapiraca binder, which is the first time Espinosa has used this sought after leaf in a binder. The filler is a delectable fusion of Nicaraguan leaves from this Central American country’s top-tobacco producing regions. The Azulejo cigar gets its name from the Portuguese for a tile that has a blue glaze. The Laranja Reserva Azulejo is a full-bodied smoke that is handmade at AJ Fernandez’s San Lotano factory in Nicaragua.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Ecuador is the perfect place to grow wrappers, because it is located on the Equator! And it has rich soils too. The weather conditions, with a nearly permanent cloudy sky, provide a natural shade, protecting the wrapper plants from sunshine and allowing the tobacco to grow thin and light. Ecuador supplies Connecticut and Sumatra type wrappers to many cigar factory in the world.

The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Brazil grows tobacco from North to South. The East Central State of Bahia is an important cigar tobacco producer. The growing area is about 100 miles west of the state capital, Salvador da Bahia, an active port on the Atlantic Coast. The Northern State of Alagoas hosts a production around the city of Arapiraca where maduro wrappers are grown. The Southern states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina produce tobacco for cigarettes and pipe.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.

Fantastic construction and absolutely p perfect draw. Good burn. Flavors were good but had a bit to much mineral flavor for me kind of almost a sour effect in the glands of the neck but if you like heavy mineral and earth this would be a great stick to try

The robusto extra is already on my favorites list but I gave the longer and slimmer Toro a try and its just as good with an excellent draw and burn and strong earthy and peppery notes that mellow a bit by the back half. I love the Laranjas and the Azulejo remains my favorite of the bunch. Another home run by Espinosa.

I went with this cigar due to being a staff pick. Excellent draw, nice burn, super peppery at first then part way thru it mellows out. In the end its a decent cigar.

Normally, I don’t let a cigar stay in my humidor for too long. But! I have always been curious about what would happen to a cigar if I were to age it for one year. According to the experts when a cigar is shipped, it is ready to smoke and does not require any further aging. If you do let it age, those in the know say, it tends to mellow out the strength and some of the flavors. So! Without really trying, I let the Laranja Reserva Azulejo age for one year and four months. It wasn’t on purpose. It just happened that way. I kept putting off smoking it until finally I decided it was time. The cigar had a muscular dark Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper that made it look imposing. Almost menacing. The construction was firm, which due to the aging I expected it to be soft. Despite its firmness, the cold draw revealed an easy flow. At first light, I got a very pleasant tobacco aroma, and I picked up some spicy notes along the way in addition to some earthiness. Into the second act, the spice died down, but the sweetness kept on coming while the earthiness gently faded away. The draw was all flow. The burn was sharp, but the ash was dark. The smoke was thick, and it had a blue tint. There was not much change in the flavor profile, which was okay by me since I love tobacco aroma. The Azulejo is billed as a full-strength cigar, but this one was just over the medium mark. This could have been attributed to the aging. I’m not sure since I didn’t have another one to compare it to. Overall, would I smoke this cigar again? Absolutely! Will I let it age again? Not unless I have another one to compare it to.

Excellent construction, draw and burn. Flavors are BOLD, dark and spicy but strength is manageable. Not recommended beginner or occasional smoker. Spicy pepper, espresso, roasted dark bitter bakers cocoa, very little sweetness. All amped up. Pairs well with Burbon. It will kick you around a bit, but worth it.

I bought this cigar based on the Neptune staff pick recommendation by Luz. It was exactly as she suggested, great draw, burn aroma and taste. Medium to mild cigar with an earthy spice of cocoa, leather and toasted nut flavor. Burns even with and has a nice draw.

The latest cigar in the Espinosa family, the Laranja Reserva Azulejo is a Nicaraguan cigar made at the AJ Fernandez San Lotano factory. The Espinosa team has hit it out of the park with this one: the dark Sumatra wrapper is very appealing and the box pressed shape makes the Gordo size easy to smoke. The binder is Brazilian Arapiraca, which creates a more rounded and mellow taste. It also accounts for why the burn and ash of this cigar are so smooth. The fillers are Nicaraguan tobaccos from Esteli, Jalapa, Condega, and Ometepe. The cold draw tastes cedary and sweet. Once you light this cigar, the draw and burn are fantastic. The Azulejo is an earthy, complex smoke with solid medium strength from beginning to end. You will taste spice, cocoa, brown sugar, leather, wood, and toasted nuts when you smoke this elegant cigar. It teems with flavors that are well balanced and compliment each other nicely. I found myself smoking this one to the nub.
