Inspired by the use of French oak in winemaking, Nelson Alfonso Egued came up with the Alfonso Anejo Line. It uses cedar and French oak to age the cigars for 5 years. An Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper and binder cover fillers from Nicaragua and Peru. Handmade at the Tabacos de Costa Rica factory these cigars are made in limited batches.

The weather conditions, with a nearly permanent cloudy sky, provide a natural shade, protecting the wrapper plants from sunshine and allowing the tobacco to grow thin and light. This climate allows tobacco growers to grow Connecticut-seed wrapper in the shade without shade cloths, resulting in more economical wrapper.

The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Due to almost permanent cloudy skies, which provide a natural shade, Ecuador is the ideal place to grow Connecticut shade tobacco. The cloud cover allows the tobacco to grown without shade cloths, which reduces its production costs. Ecuadorian Connecticut shade grown is typically used for wrappers and binders.

Nelson Alfonso is the creative director for the Golden Age design firm which has handled the branding for Habanos, S.A. cigars. In addition, he was the designer behind Padron’s 50th Anniversary humidor. Alfonso is also a gifted cigar blender and founder of Atabey Cigars. Elegantly encased in glass tubes and packaging that is collector worthy, the Atabey cigar sports a beautiful Ecuadorian wrapper and Nicaraguan binder and filler for a mild to medium-bodied smoke. The Atabey has a pleasing floral base that is accented by a sweet and salty note.

The Clandestinos is a premium cigar that is part of the Bandolero brand. During the 19th Century, the Spanish crown had a monopoly on tobacco production and the making of cigars and other tobacco products. This control allowed them to charge exorbitant prices for cigars, which gave rise to bootleggers referred to as Bandoleros. These bootleggers had cigars made in countries not under Spanish rule and sell them at a much lower cost, which eventually undermined the monarchy’s monopoly. The Clandestinos cigar is composed of a light-brown Ecuadorian wrapper placed over a binder of undisclosed origin and a Peruvian filler. It is a full-bodied stick that offers up a complexity of flavors. Expertly hand crafted in Costa Rica, the Bandolero Clandestinos is the creation of Nelson Alfonso, a Cuban graphic designer who is recognized in the cigar industry for doing the artwork and packaging for the Cohiba Behike brand. Alfonso is also the founder of Selected Tobacco.

Byron 20th Century

The Byron 20th Century cigar’s roots date back to 1848 when the first Cuban Byron cigars were released by Jose and Eusebio Alfonso in Havana, Cuba. The cigars were named after the great English poet Lord Byron. In 1998, Nelson Alfonso, founder of Selected Tobaccos and the original owners’ great-great-great grandson was able to recover the name and re-launch the brand. The Byron 20th Century cigar is composed of an Ecuadorian wrapper draped over a binder of undisclosed origin, and a filler made of Dominican, Peruvian, and undisclosed origin leaves. After they are rolled, the cigars are aged for five years so they can develop their flavor profile. The cigar is medium bodied and features a seamless construction and a superb smoking experience. They are handmade in Costa Rica.

Like the previous review said, you cannot go wrong with an Alfonso Nelson cigar. The cigar is a little milder and a little creamier than other cigars in Alfonso Nelson's repertoire. (Atabay, Bandoleros, Byron). Paired this with an Alexander Murray18 yr Sherry cask scotch and it was great. It also pair well I think with a port and with coffee.

I’ve never seen a Construction on a cigar this perfect. The draw was perfect. Toasting the cigar than lighting was a breeze. I didn’t have to think twice about it compared to other cigars because the construction is spot on. The rapper is shiny and flat with no imperfections. The taste is exactly the description you read. A 10 out of 10. In my top three of all time. It has a hefty price tag, but you get what you pay for.

If you know me, you know I'm always a fan of Ecuadorian Habano wrappers, as well as Mr. Nelson Alfonso. Beside being the curator of the most famous Cuban cigar, the Cohiba Behike, he does a phenomenal job with his lines: Atabey, Alfonso, Byron, and this one, the Bandolero Clandestinos. Coming in 4 different sizes I went with the one fitting my preference in the 4 3/8" by 60 ring gauge. The initial start of this cigar has a rich spice similar to cinnamon and a smooth smoke profile, creamy, like a sweet espresso. Mid way it does transition to a medium to full body profile with the smoke having a sweetness and bitter like a 1/2 sweet Cafe Con Leche. The finish on this cigar is my favorite though, the coffee profile changes from Cafe Con Leche to almost an espresso like note thanks to the oils from the wrapper and internal tobacco. I was able to smoke about 3/4 of the cigar with the ash still there, only to fall when I touched it against my ashtray. Paired with coconut water, coffee, coffee or cream liquor, or Amaretto would be my suggestions to compliment the cigar without taking away from the natural notes it provide.

WOW! This is a cigar I have been meaning to review for a while now and I felt guilty not sharing something this phenomenal with everyone. The first thing that stood out to me was how aesthetically pleasing the cigar, band and box are. Whenever I get asked by any of our clients “Do you have Cuban cigars” I immediately take them to this one. While not made in Cuba it reminds me of a Cuban cigar in both looks and taste. I have had the pleasure of trying authentic Cuban cigars and this one gave me similar flavors that scratch that Cuban itch whenever I am craving one. This cigar was made and blended by Nelson Alfonso, the creator of Atabey, Byron, and the designer of the Cohiba Behike band among other legendary cigars. Upon first lighting this cigar I was immediately blown away by how much flavor this guy packed. The light shade of the wrapper scared me a little but man what a pleasant surprise. The cigar starts off floral with a lot of woody earthy notes and slowly start to builds up in strength and flavor with many transitions of flavor throughout. I have recommended this cigar hundreds of times and I hear nothing but good things when they return after smoking it. This cigar is offered in many different sizes but this size was perfect for me and provided a little over an hour of the most enjoyable smoking experience I have had in a while. These cigars are aged unlike any of their counterparts. After the cigars are rolled, they are placed in cedar wood rooms reminiscent of wooden barrels used in whisky aging. These rooms are constructed from a unique blend of five different types of cedar wood, spanning from floor to ceiling. The humidity levels are carefully controlled, fluctuating daily. This process is one of the most unique aging processes I have encountered and it sets Atabey cigars apart from all others. This is an absolute must try!

This vitola was a pleasant smoking experience. For the cigar smoker with a seasoned palate, this cigar brought ample mellow bodied profiles and a wonderful aroma from start to finish. It required a specific pace to maximize it taste. If drawing was too frequent, it became a flavor profile that was less enjoyable. Slow and steady is the name of the game for this premium cigar. Had slight burn issues through the first half with tunneling being the problematic manifestation. Even for a full bodied cigar experience lover, this cigar didn't disappoint. Worth a first visit and possibly a reacquaintance.

My bank account was hoping this cigar would be overrated, that I would see this cigar as an overpriced con, that I would feel like I had thrown my money away. Non of those things are true. Thank god there is a three stick limit and I cannot buy a box!! I just love these brands where a flavour bomb does not have to mean full body. At 8 inches I was worried this might make me ill but this is a light bodied smoke. The only cigar I have enjoyed this much at 8 inches plus is the perfeXcion A by fuente on their opus x label. Just take 3 hours to slowly smoke this beauty and have great conversation too and you will love every minute of it. Life is way too short to not treat yourself once in a while. If you cannot afford this then you could get a box of 10 fuente royal salutes for around the price of 2 of these and they will definitely hit the spot……. But this is worth every penny. It needs time in you humidor to rest before smoking. Perfection

Very good smoke, it did reminds ppl they are just like high end Cohiba 'Behike', when you taste more Costa Rican cigars, Atabey is good, you just can have other options.

Hard to find, well-crafted cigar. Gorgeous golden brown wrapper, with a slight sweetness. Finish is harsher than I'd like and almost too pricey. All-around good cigar.
