When Southern Draw Cigars was founded, they had two goals in mind. The first was to create a memorable cigar with a great draw, and a nice even ash. The other goal was to make a cigar that would go well with boutique wines or craft beers. The Kudzu, Southern Draw’s debut cigar, surpasses both goals. Handmade at AJ Fernandez’s Tabacalera Fernandez factory in Nicaragua, the Kudzu is a full-strength premium cigar that features a double-fermented Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, an Ometepe binder, and filler tobaccos from Nicaragua. Once rolled the Southern Draw Kudzu is expertly aged to bring out its rich, full-bodied flavors of cedar, cocoa, and spice.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

Ecuadorian Habano
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Ecuadorian Habano wrapper has become one of the most used cigar wrappers in the market. Grown primarily by the Oliva family, this tobacco originated from Habano or H2000 seeds brought to Ecuador from Cuba. This leaf is rich and flavorful thanks to the temperate climate of Ecuador and the quality of its volcanic soil.

Ometepe
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Ometepe is a volcanic island in Lake Nicaragua, which grows tobacco in small quantities. The area’s nutrient rich volcanic soil is known to give Ometepe tobacco its sweet, earthy taste.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.

Very enjoyable cigar with great presentation. No valid concerns with the burn, did hit a stem in one that imbalanced the burn. Very unique flavor with a twinge of sweetness like blackberry or a Malbec grape. I hesitate to call this full flavored, maybe tempered close to full, but it bears a compelling unique flavor similar to Sancti Spiritus, could be some in the binder. I think this cigar is a notch below 90, will buy again. I am new with the Southern Draw label and have enjoyed everything I have tried so far. Well done!

Strong performance from a good-looking stick (armchair-leather brown with some veins on the wrapper, nice look). Lots of mellow chocolate (baker's, not sweet), woody-ness, earth. Very well balanced and medium bodied. A solid performance. Not sure I'd buy again vs. others in similar price range (e.g., Oliva Serie V Maduro, MiQuerida, etc.), but worth a try if you've not had it yet.
