Herrera Esteli Cigars

Willy Herrera was brought on to the Drew Estate team in 2011 with the permission (and encouragement) to take his time using any and all tobaccos readily available and create a great cigar. The outcome was more than great - it was exceptional. With a notable Cuban influence and spirit, the original Herrera Esteli blend is medium to full-bodied and contains a creamy spicy-yet-sweet delivery. It's more than only the general public that loved it, as well, with Cigar Aficionado awarding the Herrera Esteli Piramide Fino #8 Cigar of the Year in 2013 as part of their illustrious yearly Top 25.

Named after Drew Estate’s Master Blender Willy Herrera, the Herrera Estelí Maduro is an expression of the Brazilian Mata Fina tobacco’s floral beauty and earthiness. The Herrera Esteli is handmade at the La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate in Nicaragua. It was initially a Tienda Exclusiva (store only) release before becoming the fifth line in the Herrera Esteli brand. The blend was created by Drew Estate’s master blender Willie Herrera. It uses higher priming broadleaf leaves that Drew Estate normally reserves for its limited-edition sticks. Herrera Esteli Norteno is the long awaited release by Drew Estate with master blender Willy Herrera. A sequel of sorts to the popular Herrera Esteli cigar, which earned a spot in 2013's Top 25 Cigars of the Year, the Norteno is a dark, spicy cigar made with a Mexican San Andres wrapper. It comes in just one size, a 6x52 Toro, made with Brazilian mata fina binder, Nicaraguan fillers, and a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. The Herrera Esteli TAA is Willy's first tobacco blended with the Connecticut Broadleaf, which is the same wrapper in Drew Estate's popular Liga Privada blend.

Christian Jensen Does the Nicaraguan criollo tobacco used in the filler refer to criollo as a species of tobacco like corojo? I'm getting mixed messages from the internet some same it's means native seed grown tobacco in it's native land, but that seems a little redundant. I'm assuming it's a specific type of tobacco like corojo? Or possibly part of the 3 layers of plant used? Like top top leaves being ligero? Please clarify at your convenience ?? Andrew This looks like a 4 7/8 short corona, and has “short corona” in its name, but the descriptive length says 5 7/8 which is long corona territory. Is it really 5 7/8 Long?

A lancero is always a dance on the edge of too much burn and constant relights. I know this going in. The uneven burn here was fairly annoying for such a narrow vitola. Five relights is pushing the boundary, even for a lancero. Every time I thought I had the balance it'd go out. Everything else about this cigar was amazing. Notes went from woody and citrusy to coffee, wood, and slightly leathery. Great complexity and transitions. I'll be stashing more of these.

Very pleased with this first try cigar. I will order the 6x52 next. Beautiful cigar.. rich, deep, and imposing and likely not for a rookie smoker. Full bodied flavor with prominent earth, cedar, some notes of hay and just a twinge of sweetness to balance the strength out.. I lean toward maybe blackberry or dark Merlot wine. Immaculately constructed and apparently one had a brittle stem that tried to Shanghai the burn.. easy fix! Extremely flavorful throughout… got less redeeming at the 1.5” remaining point. It is a 90-92 quality cigar, well done!

This cigar is a flavor bomb! It’s sports a beautiful dark wrapper with a simple and vibrant band. The burn and draw were amazing. The aroma was a thick tobacco coffee. The taste was the best part with hints of coffee, rich tobacco, spice, and a subtle sweet fruit. I would recommend this smoke to anyone!

This is my all time favorite Drew Estate cigar. The appearance of this stick is attractive in a simple and nostalgic kind of way. The draw and burn were both perfect. The aroma was very pleasing smelling of rich leather and earth. I tasted notes of dark chocolate and coffee throughout with subtle notes of pepper. I would rate this a medium profile smoke. Don’t hesitate to pick some up.

The Norteño Short Corona Gorda 4-3/4 x 46 has been a reliably great go-to cigar of mine for years. The most recent box has been exceptionally wonderful. With a straight cut this little beauty produces a tremendous amount of billowy thick white-gray smoke with an easy, almost loose draw. The superb tastes have a dark, sweet fullness imbued with hints of creamy coffee, charred pepper, and earthiness. Absolutely excellent!!

As someone who works at the retail level, it's impossible to ignore the recent resurgence in popularity of lanceros. Much like vinyl records are experiencing a come back, lanceros are also now hip again! This is great news, as I've always thought lanceros don't get enough love. I've decided to smoke the Herrera Esteli Broadleaf Lancero, as I have been a big fan of the other vitolas of this esteemed brand. This was my first experience with the Broadleaf Lancero, and to no surprise, I found it to be a flavor bomb from the very first puff. Alright, I know what you may be thinking... HOW IS THE DRAW?? That seems to be the cause of concern regarding lanceros, and I'll be honest, I have experienced some tight draws on some of them before. However, this Herrera Lancero had zero issue with the draw, and gave me a nice and open pull right off the bat, without having to wait for it to 'warm up' or 'loosen'. With a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper on top of a Brazilian Mata Fina binder, I expected this smoke to be full-bodied and tasty, and while tasty, I found the strength to be more of a strong medium (not a bad thing!) Notes of leather and cocoa dominated the experience, with a subtle hint of underlying spice. The construction was on-point, with no issues regarding burn or turning off, and the ash was bright white and strong. If you're looking to be part of the Cool Kid Club, pick up a lancero next time you're shopping for a new smoke, and if you want a quality stick, look no further than the Herrera Esteli Broadleaf Lancero. Pair with a porter or a stout for maximum impact! Enjoy.

Let me welcome you to Miami, the place of beaches, parties and cigars. Willie Herrera brings us the Herrera Esteli Miami Short Corona Gorda, a very special cigar that is rolled here at the famous El Titan de Bronze factory in Miami's Little Havana. The rich brown wrapper is definitely an eye catcher. When you light this cigar, you are introduced to a nice combination of cedar and nuts, which compliment each other just right. A small hint of spice makes itself present as well. The medium-body strength I'm finding is awesome, and the draw is very good. The aroma is warm and inviting. At the halfway point, the hints of spice do go up a little bit. Not too overwhelming, but just enough to notice and make this cigar more enjoyable. The notes of cedar and nuts are still present. The right amount of all three of these notes mix well for a delicious wave of flavor. Towards the end of the cigar, everything that I found at the start is still present. I've always said, consistency in a cigar is a good thing! Overall, the Herrera Esteli Miami is an incredible smoke that also happens to have an interesting origin. Find yourself a folding chair, set up somewhere nice with a great drink and enjoy your time in Miami, even if it's vicariously.

Overall good cigar. The flavors are bold: coffee, cocoa, some citrus and on the plus side for pepper. I didn't notice any nicotine kick. The combination of dark flavors, medium smoothness and pepper is not for everyone. If you like to start your day with a robust espresso (no sugar) and end with a shot of Burbon after you had some hot and spicy chicken wings ... you gonna love this stick!

I was looking very much forward to smoking this Lonsdale size in the Herrera Esteli Brazilian Maduro blend, as I have smoked all of the other sizes. This blend is made with a Brazilian Meta Fina wrapper, Connecticut Broadleaf binder, and Nicaraguan fillers -- everything I love in a cigar!! There are 5 sizes now released as this Lonsdale being the newest one. Upon first light, a huge amount of smoke output was prevalent which is very typical of many Drew Estate cigars. Pepper notes are upfront, slowly followed by by a very delicious sweetness/creaminess to balance it out. Chocolate notes are also mingling about. Strength hits medium/full from the very beginning. Into the second third, the balance between spicy/pepper and sweetness is perfect!! There are fruity notes that jump into play along with nutty and chocolate notes which makes for a delicious combination. At this point it is a very well rounded, rich smoke. Into the final third the notes pretty much stay the same but the cigar definitely amps up in strength. Espresso notes also become present. I thoroughly enjoyed this smoking experience from start to finish -- great richness, complexity and construction!! This size may be my most favorite yet. If you have never tried this blend the Lonsdale would be a great size to start with. The price point is pretty amazing also considering the richness and complexity of this cigar. Enjoy!

Threw this in a mixed singles order on a whim, really just to have a lancero in the humidor. Finally got around to smoking it last night and what a surprise! It immediately reminded me of a decent Cuban, so much flavour yet so smooth. Great draw and burn and plenty of smoke. Also none of that horrible bitter taste a lot of cigars develop once into the last 3rd. Definitely buying a box of these!!

Willy Herrera has always had a niche for making great quality cigars. That trend is found in the Herrera Esteli Norteno Robusto Grande. The first thing that caught my eye was the appealing dark and rustic wrapper. This cigar has Nicaraguan filler, a Honduran binder and a Mexican San Andres Wrapper. This combination gives the cigar a very rich and complex taste. At first, you are introduced to nice earthy and espresso notes. It starts off with a medium to medium-full strength profile. A spicy note is also introduced in the first couple of puffs. At the half way point, the spicy notes do diminish a bit. The earthy and espresso notes are still present, although nothing overwhelming, just enough to compliment this delicious experience. Toward the end of the cigar, the spicy notes do reappear for a last minute final stand. The strength does go up a bit also, while all the notes found earlier are still present and weaving in and out wonderfully. Overall, I would say that this was one of the most consistent and flavorful cigars I have had in a long time. Get yours today and enjoy this great stick, it's already becoming a classic.

My first time smoking the Corona after having enjoyed the Toro a couple times and I almost wanna say I like the Corona even better than the Toro which holds a spot in my favorites list. From first light a delicious creamy cigar. Nice full draw but needs atleast a second puff for that full draw. Required a few touch ups and will go out on you if you dont stay on top of it. Smoked it back to back with a miami and I'd say the miami is spicier and the Brazilian is creamier. I love them both tho. The strength of this stick is its rich creamy flavor. Overall a good tasty medium cigar.

Powerful Cigar, with only 3 months humi time. Solid construction, tightly rolled. Seamless wrapper with barely visible veins. Nice aroma of sweet fine tobacco. Cold draw is Amazing, just the right resistance, with clear cocoa flavor with a hint of sweetness. Even before lighting, I know this will be a great Experience. Burn is perfect on the 1/3, then became a bit irregular but self corrected, no touch up needed, with ash holding for a little over and Inch. Smoke volume is average, OK, deep sweet penetrating. Powerful cigar with a complex spicy earth flavor, spicy being the Key word. 2/3 Swetness emerges both in flavor and aroma with Spiciness dominating the blend. Final 3rd as one gets used to the spiciness, sweet earth prevail with what I can only compare to pipe tobacco (dont get me wrong, it's not Yummy Bitches sweet). Overall a Perfect Complex Cigar. Will let my other sticks rest and give it try again in a month or two.

The best in the Herrera Esteli line. This has an aggressive flavor profile, and pretty strong, but not overly strong. I get a bit of sweetness and cocoa with plenty of pepper on retrohale. About half way through the strength does go up a tiny bit, this size is a touch stronger then the torpedo or toro especial size. The construction on these are great, ash holds pretty good for the ring gauge size. Highly recommended for medium plus smokers.

Rich and complex, not overly strong strength wise. Would rather it Medium plus for body. Required some burn touchups, but overall not terrible construction. I do prefer the Miami black label in this brand too, as some others have mentioned. It is a natural comparison and the black label one is just a bit better overall.

as others have noted: these are a crap shoot in construction. everything else IS there, but the 1st 2/3rds were plagued by relights & even cherry falling out upon going for a tap. i powered thru it all as it was gifted to me by a legit friend (who pulled it out of his 68°/68RH humi so storage was ruled out). if it were rolled @ another factory, i'd say it was a fluke. but as personal experience HAS made evident DE/JdN continue to have serious QC issues.

The Norteno has been a staple in my humidor for many years--big fan of all sizes. The cigar has a gorgeous rich dark San Andres maduro wrapper with a soft box pressed shape. This, against a simple cool green and cream banding, entices one even more to pick up this cigar. The Norteno hosts Nicaraguan filler and a Honduran binder along with that San Andres wrapper. Upon first light, the cigar has an enormous outpour of smoke. Many notes were upfront which gave nice complexity right off the bat--notes of espresso, black pepper, and also some nice sweetness creeps in. Into the second third, the pepper subsides and the palate is flooded with saltiness and sweetness--chocolate notes, cocoa notes and a bit of earthiness--great complexity! Into the final third, the strength definitely jumps up to full body. The notes are salty, sweet, and toasty--full strength, full body and full flavor. This smoke had no construction issues--perfect draw, burn and great smoke output. It was so delicious that you almost want to take a bite of it! This is a great cigar to smoke after a big dinner instead of a fattening desert! Definitely a must try -- enjoy!

Whoa! Cut and a light... straight spice spicy spice to the face! Intense pepper and earth with a long finish and strong pepper on the retro. I getting a strong tangy flavor along with everything else. A lot of flavor so far. Heading into the second third the pepper is still present, but makes way for more leather and earth along with the tangy citrus. A lot of flavor shifts in this cigar as now I am picking up more of a cedar sweetness and more textured creamy smoke. final third was smooth tobacco that wasn’t too overpowering like most do towards the end as it heats up. Good smoke.

The body of this cigar felt a little under-filled and it's not burning evenly without a some occasional touch up. Flavor-wise, there is definitely the smooth black pepper but I'm not getting much else. I must admit that I'm not a huge Cuban fan, for the price of a genuine average Cuban I can buy a top shelf Dominican or Nicaraguan. Even still as a non-Cuban, it is a good representation of a genuine Cuban. For the price it is a good cigar to have in your humidor when you want to pretend to visit the forbidden fruit of that island nation. This is a decent nuts and bolts cigar without the aroma complexities of something more expensive. These have been in my humidor for nearly 6 months. Maybe they'll improve in a few more months.

This cigar and whole line is great. Wrapper is nice dark, and the oils are apparent. Deep rich tobacco flavors, lots of chocolate, or cocoa in the profile with some spice notes with sweetness. Great construction, Draw and burn were both close to perfect. Full bodied and heavy, not for beginners.

First Third - Starts off with straight forward tobacco flavor with a bitter finish. Finish turns to a bitter nut flavor about halfway through the first third. There was a small runner that cause the burn to go a bit lob-sided. Second third - Similar to the first third. Basic tobacco with a bitter nut finish. Burn corrected itself. Final third - Same as the second. Overall, this stick was OK but I wouldn't buy it again. I prefer the Robusto Grande size.

I can't recommend this cigar. It started out a little bitter and somewhat spicy. It didn't taste too good until after the first 1/3. Toward the last 3rd it started to burn lopsided and began to have the bitter aftertaste. I won't get this again, there's just better smokes for the price.

Love the flavors of this stick and the robusto+ size. Beautiful, rustic dark wrapper & appearance. Dark earthy taste.... but the Brazilian wrapper has a sweet floral thing going on which is very unique. Different from the rest of the Herrera Esteli line - but my favorite of the bunch. Burn can be little wonky at times, but is usually self correcting. Overall an excellent smoke. Got a box during the summer sale, came out to a little under $7 per cigar. Very happy w/ my purchase.

Part of the charm of this cigar is it was hand rolled at EL Titan de Bronze in Miami on the "Calle Ocho." I have been there. The cigar itself had an uneven appearance with vein on the bottom which basically caused the dual bands to look like they were out of place. The draw had some slight resistance but not enough to make it feel like you were really pulling on it. the Ash was a nice whitish color with a very nice pack to it, and a perfect burn line, The aroma and taste were spot on, very much a woody/Oak and Earthiness to it. Did not have to relight it, and it did not get harsh at the end at all, I was able to get it down to a pretty small nub. This is an easy recommend for the medium to full smoker. It is strong but not to the point that I would consider it too much.

Willie Herrera, master blender for Drew Estate, has always had a knack for knowing what smokers like. He has come out with his latest creation: the Herrera Esteli Miami. This cigar has everything a medium to full body smoker is looking for. When I first saw the Piramide, it quickly called my attention with its perfect figurado construction and seamless dark brown wrapper. Once I lit the cigar, I quickly had delicious notes of oak and earth greet me. The Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, the Ecuadorian binder and Nicaraguan filler gave the cigar a wonderful taste that I have not found in a while. The cigar is consistent throughout. The aroma is welcoming. I especially liked the fact that once it was lit, I did not have to relight it. That says a lot about its construction, brought to you by the highest level Cuban rollers found in Miami (where the cigar is actually made). This is one cigar that you all should try out. I am sure you will fall in love with it as I did.

I’m a huge fan of the Herrera esteli line and this new addition is another staple in the product line. The appearance is perfect, draw was nice and smooth and taste was great! If you’re a big fan of the original Herrera Esteli and want a little more kick than grab this stick. It’s very similar to the original but has a step up in flavor. Great cigar!

Long, lean, and packed with flavor, the Herrera Esteli Habano Limited Edition Lancero (or long panatela if you are so inclined) was well worth the 47 minutes it took me to smoke. Made by Drew Estate’s master blender Willy Herrera, this namesake stick features an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, a Honduran binder, and stuffed with Nicaraguan Corojo and Criollo fillers. Nice! The squeeze test revealed some give but overall the construction was solid. The cold draw let me know that its length was not going to affect its performance. Appearance-wise, the Herrera Esteli Habano Limited Edition was as gorgeous as it was long. The wrapper was toothy, veiny, and it had a pleasant reddish hue to it. The first third informed me that I was in for a spicy ride. The wrapper’s visible seams put me on notice for any burn issues, but I did not encounter any. And what about the ash? All I can say is that this stick wore its ash proudly like a salt and pepper colored peacock during the mating season. The retro-hale confirmed the peppery nature of this stick. By the second third, the profile shifted slightly to a more pronounced tobacco flavor. The Herrera Esteli Habano Limited Edition’s aroma was all tobacco without being overpowering. There was a shift back to pepper in the final third, but the tobacco flavor and aroma did not back down. Long story short, I would recommend this stick to anyone who’s trying to elongate their smoking portfolio.

Well constructed. Perfect burn down to the nub and very smooth. This has to be one of the best medium bodied smokes. I put this blend up against the best of them and for me the Herrera Esteli Is still the perfect medium smoke for anytime of day.

These 5x52 are my perfect mid day smoke. I get about a little over an hour of smooth creamy smoke and the flavor I amazing. If you haven’t tried these yet you need to! This is my favorite go to smoke hands down

Herrera Esteli has a penchant for subtle, classic elegance. Though I would not deem this stick incredibly complex, the flavor profile was right up my alley.... coffee, cherry, pepper, cinnamon, earth & leather. Yum. There was also an underlying sweetness throughout the whole smoke that can possibly be attributed to the Brazilian Mata Fina binder. The burn was decent, not perfect, but decent. It needed minimal correction. Smoke output was high, the ash pale and firm. The draw was near perfect. I found that somewhere into the second third of this smoke i noticed that it very creamy, almost buttery...perhaps it was that way from the start and I just failed to notice it right away... Try pairing with a decent Bourbon....the flavors compliment each other very nicely. Cheers!

Such a great cigar. I remember when these first released, the seamless wrappers were the closest thing I had seen to a Cuban. Then after smoking it, it was the closest thing I've smoked to a Cuban. Now you can say that thats a good thing or not, but one thing you won't say is that this cigar blended by Willy Herrera isn't a fantastic cigar.

First off this is a good looking box pressed stick (one of the flattest I have smoked). Nice wrapper leaf and the branding very clean looking. This was a very well balanced cigar, cold draw notes were grassy with a hint of possibly raisin sweetness. It was a bit difficult to get this stick lit fully on the foot but once it took of the burn was good only requiring one touch up. The flavors are very full and start off cedar, leather on the palate with hints of spice and sweetness subtly coming through. All in all good flavor (possibly a bit flat) but possibly a bit too full for my tastes, as I tend to prefer a more medium/lighter flavor profile.

The dark, oily, and shiny wrapper caught my eye immediately; so sleek. Knowing the binder is the brazilian mata fina I love...that's it, I had to smoke it. If you think the look is stunning just wait and smoke it, the cigar is great in every way . Flavor wise it is complex and well balanced; woody and earthy with coffe notes that comes and goes, some mild pepper that increases in the final third surrounded by a sweetness found in figs and some zest here and there. Nice aroma, medium plus to full in strength, medium flavor. Good draw and a beautiful even burning line, no relights needed it. Hands down an excellent cigar, Herrera Esteli did it again!

Man this is a wonderful smoke. Very pleasing to the eye with a rich dark shiny wrapper. Starts off dry with wood flavors and develops a light sweetness as you keep going. Herrera Esteli TAA exclusive Maduro 6X52 Wrapper Connecticut broad leaf Brazilian mata fina binder Nicaraguan fillers Burn time 1 hr 15 min Since the launch of Herrera Esteli brand, I've been a fan. So after hearing about this cigar, I was eager to try it. Mr. Herrera is a top notch blender and has yet released a product I have not liked. The contrast job was amazing, with a deep rich chocolate color wrapper. From the initial draw, I was amazed by this cigar. It had a nice medium body tobacco taste perfectly mixed with a strong cedar tone. Midway through the cigar, the cedar tone became milder with a subtle pepper tone that is more noticeable on the exhale than the inhale. The last quarter of the stick intensified to a more medium to full flavor with the pepper becoming a hint stronger, cedar tone still present. I used a vcutter on this cigar and the draw was good not to hard but not overwhelming light. I will highly recommend this cigar to anyone who enjoys the Liga Privada cigars as it has a similar taste. Once again Willie you nailed another one. By dstogieman

A friend who is extremely well versed in cigars, as a former cigar store manager, recommended this stick. He acknowledged that it’s less strong in flavor than I prefer, but said it had become his favorite daily smoke. So, I gave it a try. A wonderful cigar! Easy draw, smooth, mild, flavorful, with a slight peppery taste, I’d rate it just shy of the Madanudo Cru Royale, in the same flavor/strength range. I’m sure he would reverse that order. Try it! It’s a great cigar.

This medium bodied, woody cigar is full of complex balanced flavor. It has a long finish. There are not many lonsdales being produced, so I was excited about the vitola. The San Andres Maduro wrapper gives this slightly box pressed cigar a sweet, earthy taste. Notes of leather, cocoa and black pepper can be tasted throughout. A fantastic cigar!

This is a very strong cigar, the kind to enjoy after a nice meal with a glass of a strong port wine, or a whiskey. Lots of pepper on the front of the tongue which mellows a bit during the smoke but never quite lets you forget it. Very even burning and enjoyable down to the nub. Smooth draw with a good amount of smoke - a very luxurious stick that is not for the faint of heart.

At first glance this lancero has a golden brown ecuadorian habano wrapper. Lighting the cigar there was a burst of flavors and an easy draw. The first third of the cigar there is a strong wood and slight black pepper that sits in the back of your throat. In the second third the pepper soothes out and a the wonderful espresso enters the pallet.It stays about the same with slight differences in the final third. This cigar held its ash very well and was very enjoyable.

At first glance you can see the dark Mexican Maduro wrapper that was thoroughly deveined. At first light the bitter sweet taste of dark chocolate enters my mouth. Going through the cigar it kept a beautiful tight white ash and burned evenly. Midway through the cigar notes of espresso start kicking in. As expected another great cigar from Willy Herrera.
