The Fratello Arlequin is a medium strength cigar that is handmade in Nicaragua by Joya de Nicaragua. Its dark, oily Mexican San Andres maduro wrapper covers an Ecuadorian binder, and filler tobaccos from Nicaragua and Peru. The Fratello Arlequin has a naturally sweet flavor profile accented with notes of spice and wood.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Mexican tobacco is very dark and the best leaves can be used as maduro wrappers. In San Andres de Tuxtla (in the state of Vera Cruz), there is a very interesting production of Sumatra seed wrappers. Dark air cured tobaccos are produced in Mexico, mainly in Vera Cruz and Tampico provinces, on the East Coast along the Gulf. There is also some production in Yucatan. Mexico's volcanic soil yields tobacco that is spicy and earthy, with a very distinctive flavor.

Ecuador
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Ecuador is the perfect place to grow binders, because it is located on the Equator and it has rich soils too. The weather conditions, with a nearly permanent cloudy sky, provide a natural shade, protecting the plants from sunshine and allowing the tobacco to grow thin and light. Ecuador supplies Connecticut and Sumatra type binders to many cigar factory in the world.

The Fratello Arlequin gets its name from a light-hearted and wily character typically found in Italian comedy theatre. Arlequin is Spanish for Harlequin. But let me tell you, this cigar is no joke. Its eye-pleasing Mexican maduro wrapper was the lightest maduro I have ever seen. Overall construction was firm and had some give. Prior to lighting, I picked up a sweet aroma with a subtle earthy note. During the first act, the Arlequin’s rich tobacco sweetness took center stage with spicy notes playing a good supporting role. The earthy notes revealed themselves a little bit more. The draw was a little tight, but it didn’t affect the smoke. The retro hale was peppery and the finish was a little spicy. In the second act, the Arlequin’s warm tobacco flavor and earthy aroma shared the spotlight without upstaging each other. The draw did improve during this act. As for the smoke it was thick, and the ash was white and dark. The burn was sharp throughout without missing a line. The spiciness receded to the background, but its presence was still felt. During the final act, the tobacco flavor delivered a warm, mellow monolog that merited a standing ovation. Strength wise the Arlequin was on the medium side although it did start a little strong. Overall, the Fratello Arlequin delivered an excellent performance that is definitely worth experiencing again.
