Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Ecuador is the perfect place to grow wrappers, because it is located on the Equator! And it has rich soils too. The weather conditions, with a nearly permanent cloudy sky, provide a natural shade, protecting the wrapper plants from sunshine and allowing the tobacco to grow thin and light. Ecuador supplies Connecticut and Sumatra type wrappers to many cigar factory in the world.

The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
The San Andres region in Mexico is known for producing some of the best tobacco in the world. The tobacco is stalk cut and valued for its rich dark color and used to make noteworthy maduro wrappers and binders.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.

Well they were supposed to be box pressed I guess the factory had another plan. Even with them not being box pressed the flavors are spot on, and the burn is even. Some of the sticks have an overly snug draw but still perform well. As usual the cigars showed up on time and not damaged. Great job Neptune Cigars.

Dark chocolate and espresso come to mind on the dry draw. The wrapper has a nice toothy oily feel and the smell is outta this world. When you light up, the first draw has cinnamon, and espresso and a light peppery finish. Mid burn has a lot of spice and goes very well with a wee dram of Islay Scotch. I'm a big fan of the box press. I am also a fan of deep flavor. This cigar delivers both. Burns steady and has a tight ash. So far good quality control. This cigar has consistancy. Draw is good no complaints. I bought a box. Good looking box too. The wrapper burns equal to the binder and filler.

I’m not sure if the folks at AJ Fernandez were thinking about Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” when they created the Hoyo La Amistad Black, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they had. Because, this is one dark stick. Luckily, it did not resemble a “horror” in a shape, form, or fashion. Anyway without any further literary references, let’s get to the “heart” of the matter. Brazenly dark, bold, and strong, the Hoyo La Amistad Black sports an Ecuadorian Sumatra-seed wrapper that was a little veiny. And to make things darker, the Hoyo La Amistad Black’s wrapper masks a Mexican San Andres binder and a Nicaraguan Habano filler. A pre-light sniff hinted of the rich tobacco flavor that awaited. Construction-wise, this cigar was firm but with a little give, which meant it was well-built. The cold draw was nice and easy. The first third let me know this stick was going to be strong and with lots of smoke. The retro-hale was peppery. The draw was nice and smooth. An undeniably strong tobacco flavor carried itself from the second to the final third, and the heavy smoke continued from start to finish. Will I smoke this stick again? Oh, yeah! I recommend the Hoyo La Amistad Black if you like a strong stick, but I strongly suggest you smoke it after a hearty meal.
