The Micallef Migdalia is named after Migdalia Sanchez, a world-famous Cuban tobacconist and daughter-in-law of Pedro F. Gomez, who is Micallef’s master blender. The Micallef Migdalia is Ms. Sanchez’s special blend. It features a dark Mexican San Andres Habano wrapper that has been aged for 4 years. This exquisite wrapper surrounds a Sumatra binder, which has been aged for 4 years, and is supported by a filler made of four-year old Dominican and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos. Handmade in Nicaragua, the Micallef Migdalia will treat your senses to an indescribably delicious abundance of flavor and aroma.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.

Mexican tobacco is very dark and the best leaves can be used as maduro wrappers. In San Andres de Tuxtla (in the state of Vera Cruz), there is a very interesting production of Sumatra seed wrappers. Dark air cured tobaccos are produced in Mexico, mainly in Vera Cruz and Tampico provinces, on the East Coast along the Gulf. There is also some production in Yucatan. Mexico's volcanic soil yields tobacco that is spicy and earthy, with a very distinctive flavor.
Habano
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Habano wrapper leaf is Cuban-seed tobacco that is grown and cultivated in the traditional Cuban way.
Binder
Sumatra
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Tobacco grown in Sumatra is chiefly used as a wrapper, but it also serves as a great binder. It is flavorful and has a consistent dark color.
Filler
Dominican Republic
Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.
Filler (or “tripa” in Spanish) is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar. The Dominican Republic is considered one of the most premier tobacco growing countries in the world. The filler tobacco grown in this Caribbean island nation ranges from mild to full bodied. Olor Dominicano and Piloto Cubano are the main types of tobacco grown in the Dominican Republic.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.

Right out of the cellophane, there's a bit of funkiness to this stick. It smells a bit off, but I suspect that is because it's aged tobacco as well as being aged after it's rolled. Nothing awful, just funky. I did a double v cut and the pre light draw was exceptional. Really nice flavor profile. Once I lit this stick, it was oure enjoyment from start to finish. This is a box worthy cigar for sure.

Yesterday was International Women's Day, and in honor of this, I lit up the Micallef Migdalia, named after Migdalia Sanchez, a truly important figure in the premium cigar world. Migdalia represents decades of Cuban tradition and heritage with expert knowledge on everything tobacco, heavily involved in the industry ever since receiving her tobacconist certification at only 17 years of age. Her involvement in this eponymous Micallef blend showcases her knack for producing exceptional cigars, and it is with great pleasure that I get the chance to indulge in the fruits of her labor. The Micallef Migdalia carries a striking San Andres Habano wrapper on top of a Sumatra binder, containing both Nicaraguan and Dominican filler that have been meticulously married to offer a tasty blend that wowed me from the very first puff. The Migdalia starts off with some prominent cedar notes along with an undertone of hay. Not before long, an earthy sweetness appears, and by the time you reach the middle, a delicious note of roasted coffee becomes the focal point. At this point, I'm at a loss for words as to how a cigar can be so complex and satisfying. As I enter the final third, a sense of figs and berries hits my palate, and once I remove the band and hit the final stretch, a last minute one-two combo of vanilla and leather finish things off with authority. The Micallef Migdalia is medium in strength with an easy and open draw and an even burn throughout. It's not often I'm speechless after smoking a cigar, but I cannot express enough how good the Micallef Migdalia is. This will be one of my go-to sticks when I want a complex offering that shows how a good blend can change and evolve as you smoke. Do yourself a favor and try one, and see how quickly you deem it box-worthy. I am still stunned! I've always known that some things are greatly improved with a woman's touch, but Migdalia Sanchez proves this in spades. Cheers to the Sisters of the Leaf!
