The Hot Cake is the follow-up to HVC’s Pan Caliente brand. Handmade by Aganorsa Leaf in Nicaragua, the Hot Cake is a fuller bodied blend that sports a toothy Mexican San Andres maduro wrapper placed over a Nicaraguan binder and filler. HVC Cigars was founded by Reineir Lorenzo. It is an acronym for Havana City, which was Lorenzo’s hometown in Cuba.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Mexican tobacco is very dark and the best leaves can be used as maduro wrappers. San Andres Maduro is a thick, medium bodied dark leaf, also called San Andres Morron. Like Connecticut Broadleaf, San Andres Maduro is stalk cut and used for binder and wrapper.

Nicaraguan Corojo
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan Corojo ’99 tobacco was first used as a wrapper in Cuba during the late 20th Century. It was then grown in Ecuador and eventually in Nicaragua. Primarily, it is used as a wrapper, but it is also used as a binder. It is regarded for its spiciness.

The draw was a little tight and it didn't have the best burn. Nonetheless, a not bad stick. Definitely had chocolate notes, leather, and sweet candy. But behind all that was quite a strong spice. The spice was there at least half of the smoke, which made it quite unpleasant. It got better eventually but cigar became a bit earthy near the end. I think a little overrated cigar, there are better chocolate bombs out there! Medium strength.

A silky creaminess rises to the surface, mellowing the sharper edges and deepening the body. Roasted almonds appear quietly, adding a toasted richness that feels both comforting and indulgent. The draw leans snug but never struggles—each pull delivers full, textured smoke. The burn line wavers slightly, but it’s steady, confident. Midway through, the cigar leans into itself. Earth and cedar come forward, giving the profile a more grounded feel. The creamy texture intensifies, binding together the spice, sweetness, and fruit into something smoother, more complete. The pepper on the retrohale backs off, no longer demanding attention—just whispering its presence in the background. Then, in the final stretch, everything changes. Its a okay cigar to me. Too much sharp pepper. Very little to no chocolate or caramel flavors at all. Just a lot of pepper, oak and minimal dusty cocoa. Just buy a MF JG for the price. Better in every category.

Let me just begin by saying that my wife hates all cigar aroma BUT this! this is a cigar that everytime i lit up she's like: "you should stick to those cigars" but the flavor is amazing, it always burns even and it wont go out easily even if you're outdoors, one of my top 3 cigars in my book.

Lost of paper lingers in the palate, the caramel in nowhere to be found, full strength that hits you from the start but mellows after the first third to reveal better flavors after that. I've loved the handful of corona gorda Hot Cakes I've had, but this wider vitola cam across as dead, flat, and frumpy for me. "Cheap old man cigar" sounds about right in aroma and flavor. Nothing wrong with appearance or burn. Draw a little tight with a v-cut. Can do much better for the price.

Maybe I've gotten lucky, but the burn and draw on the Hot Cakes I've had has always been so perfect that I usually have a glamorous 3.5" ash dangling from the end around the halfway mark. Flavor is sweet, breakfasty, with copious cinnamon, honey, maple sugar, toasted nuts, and pepper, with a smooth and agreeable consistency. The name Hot Cakes appears spot-on. For devotees of the Mexican San Andres wrapper, and I am certainly one, this stick delivers, but in a new way that I found quite novel. The slightly lighter color of the maduro wrapper, while still falling solidly into the "dark" category, seems to have a lot of character, allowing high notes to come through as well as deep sweet tones, and landing so beautifully that I'm amazed this stick isn't twice the price, though I'll gladly accept. Excellent cigar.

This was a tasty little cigar that performed nice. Medium and creamy while leathery and peppery at same time. Excellent draw and nice burn with only a couple minor touch ups. Lasted over an hour and I smoked it down to the singed fingertips and it never got bitter. Excellent little cigar.

Dark flavors, burn and construction is hit and miss. Most times they smoke perfectly, other times they need a touch up or 4.

Oh man...this is a keeper. I paired this with some strong Vietnamese hot coffee. Damn, what a smoke. Start to finish the burn, draw and taste was on point. A bit creamy and lightly sweet with milk chocolate in the background. I really didn't want this one to end. Outstanding. I will buy this again.

Not much aroma off of foot or wrapper. Wrapper has a slightly uneven and rustic look to it. Draw was prefect. Flavor notes are salted deep dark chocolate with slight hint of sweetness to it. Burned great, highly recommend this one!

Very smooth filling smoke. Draw is tight V-CUT is recommended.The aromas are great sweet retro for me. Cocoa fills the mouth sweet earth. Burn was off a bit it was 55 or so last bit breezy and had to relight twice. Very tight roll did not affect the smoke output. Definitely will stock up for summer evenings.

Reineir Lorenzo moved from Cuba and his life changed when his family introduced him to Eduardo Fernandez of Aganorsa Leaf. In 2011 HVC was born and they have been producing some very unique boutique cigars!! The Hot Cake is one of the newer creations. It has a gorgeous dark San Andres wrapper, Corojo 99 binder and Criollo 98/Corojo 2006 fillers. With a name as strong as Hot Cake it has to look delicious and bold -- and it sure does. Let's see if it lives up to its name.... Upon first light, cinnamon notes and a bit of fruitiness joined by dark chocolate are upfront, followed by a very peppery retrohale. About an inch into the smoke, a sweet creaminess takes action along with some nuttiness playing a role. My only issue at this point ( not even a big issue ) is the draw is a bit tight for my liking. Into the second third, earthy and cedar notes pop up. The creaminess and sweetness also amps up in intensity making a very balanced smooth and sweet experience. The pepper is still there on the retrohale but has calmed down immensely. Into the final third, the sweetness begins to disappear, and charred notes (which I love) enter into the scene. It reminds me of burnt toast or burnt marshmallows! I will say it was a very surprising change but a very nice one! This was an enjoyable smoking experience--the flavors work very well with each other--nice complexity and transitions. The draw, as I stated earlier, was a bit tight but did not cause any problems. The burn line and ash were perfect. I would highly recommend this cigar. Enjoy!

A very dark flavored cigar. Loads of black coffee and pepper and extra dark chocolate. A bit too snug on the draw. I would smoke another but am not running to buy a box. It has a nice amount of strength.
