After a tobacco-buying trip to the San Andres region of Mexico, Foundation Cigars founder and master blender Nick Melillo was inspired to create a cigar that not only paid tribute to the region’s rich tobacco fields but to the ancient Olmec civilization. Thus, the Foundation Olmec Claro cigar line was born. The Olmecs inhabited the San Andres area from approximately 1600 to 400 BCE. They were known to cultivate tobacco and smoke cigars, and they had built pyramids using precise mathematical formulas. The Olmec Claro cigar features a warm tan Mexican San Andres wrapper that covers a Nicaraguan binder and filler. The leaves for the filler have been bale-aged for three years prior to rolling. This special aging process helps the leaves develop their unique flavor profile.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Natural wrapper, also known as Colorado Claro, is light brown in color.
Wrapper
Mexican
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Mexican tobacco is very dark and the best leaves can be used as maduro wrappers. In San Andres de Tuxtla (in the state of Vera Cruz), there is a very interesting production of Sumatra seed wrappers. Dark air cured tobaccos are produced in Mexico, mainly in Vera Cruz and Tampico provinces, on the East Coast along the Gulf. There is also some production in Yucatan. Mexico's volcanic soil yields tobacco that is spicy and earthy, with a very distinctive flavor.
Binder
Nicaragua
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.

The Foundation Olmec Claro started off a bit underwhelming in the first third, but really picked up in the second and final thirds. Initially, there were subtle notes of cedar and pepper, but it wasn’t until the second third that richer flavors of dark chocolate and earth emerged, adding a welcome complexity. The final third brought it home with robust, layered flavors that were smooth yet bold. Construction was solid but did require a a few minor touchups.

This one is a staple in my collection and a nice change of pace from the maduro sticks that I usually smoke. The lighter San Andreas leaf is full of wood, a little earth and plenty of spice! You'll pretty much always find a box of both claro and maduro in my humidor at any given time.

Ordered two of these, smoked them, immediately bought a box. Similar to a My Father Mi Amor in flavor. The box press is the same as the Menelik, if you've had that, but the draw is much better. Good spice with coffee notes. The maduro is also good, but the claro is much more versatile--can smoke during an afternoon or after dinner.

Wow, just wow! This has quickly become a favorite this year, no question. The flavors started off as cocoa with a little saltiness to it, but peppery on the retrohale. Like a nice cup of Mexican hot cocoa. The strength toned down a little bit halfway through, but the end had almost a bacon bits like flavor to it. I'll be looking for another box of these for sure!
