According to Nick Melillo, President of the Foundation Cigar Co., the Charter Oak Connecticut cigar is an homage to his home state of Connecticut. In addition, Melillo wanted to create a budget-conscious cigar designed to be enjoyed every day and for any occasion. The Charter Oak Connecticut surpasses this goal. The Charter Oak’s handsome Connecticut shade wrapper surrounds a Sumatran binder which envelops a carefully blended filler from the Jalapa and Estelí regions of Nicaragua.

When developing the Charter Oak Pasquale cigar, Foundation Cigars owner and founder Nick Melillo dedicated the cigar to his grandfather, who preferred Connecticut Broadleaf tobacco. Pasquale helped Melillo develop his affinity for all things tobacco and cigars. The cigar is also a tribute to the opening of the new Foundation Cigars office in 2023, which is in the Connecticut River Valley where the prized USA Connecticut Shade and USA Connecticut Broadleaf tobacco are grown. The Pasquale cigar features a dark chocolatey USA Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper that covers a Nicaraguan binder and filler. After a tobacco-buying trip to the San Andres region of Mexico, Foundation Cigars founder and master blender Nick Melillo was inspired to create a cigar that not only paid tribute to the region’s rich tobacco fields but to the ancient Olmec civilization. Thus, the Foundation Olmec Claro cigar line was born. The Olmecs inhabited the San Andres area from approximately 1600 to 400 BCE. They were known to cultivate tobacco and smoke cigars, and they had built pyramids using precise mathematical formulas. The Olmec Claro cigar features a warm tan Mexican San Andres wrapper that covers a Nicaraguan binder and filler. The leaves for the filler have been bale-aged for three years prior to rolling. This special aging process helps the leaves develop their unique flavor profile.

Mexican
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Mexican tobacco is very dark and the best leaves can be used as maduro wrappers. In San Andres de Tuxtla (in the state of Vera Cruz), there is a very interesting production of Sumatra seed wrappers. Dark air cured tobaccos are produced in Mexico, mainly in Vera Cruz and Tampico provinces, on the East Coast along the Gulf. There is also some production in Yucatan. Mexico's volcanic soil yields tobacco that is spicy and earthy, with a very distinctive flavor.

The Foundation Olmec Maduro cigar line was crafted as a tribute to the Olmec civilization which occupied the San Andres region in Mexico as well as other regions between 1600 and 400 BCE. The Olmecs were known to have been one of the first civilizations to use mathematical formulas to build pyramids and smoke cigars. The Olmec Maduro cigars were also created to honor the distinct tobacco that comes from this region. Its dark chocolatey Mexican San Andres maduro wrapper undergoes a slow, low temperature fermentation process, which preserves the tobaccos’ oils and contributes to the cigar’s overall flavor profile. The cigar’s Nicaraguan filler leaves are bale-aged for three years prior to rolling. This careful aging process allows the tobacco to develop its distinct flavors.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

The Highclere Castle Senetjer cigar was crafted to celebrate the discovery of the ancient Egyptian King Tutankhamun’s tomb, which was discovered a century ago. Lord Carnarvon, who was the fifth Earl of Carnarvon and resided in Highclere Castle, funded the expedition, which was led by the Archaeologist Howard Carter. The cigar features a mouthwatering Ecuadorian Habano Colorado wrapper that is expertly draped over a Brazilian Mata Fina binder and filler tobaccos of an undisclosed origins. The filler tobaccos for the Senetjer have been aged for three years. Once rolled, the cigars are placed in a highly collectible box that is an exact reproduction of one of the storage boxes that was found in the King’s tomb. The cigar box is adorned with ancient hieroglyphics that when translated means Highclere Castle. The Senetjer cigar is named after the ancient Egyptian word for incense or “of the gods.” The cigars are handmade at AJ Fernandez’s Tabacalera Fernandez factory in Nicaragua.
