Joya de Nicaragua Antano Gran Reserva is the original Antano 1970 blend released in 2001, with the strength of the cigar brought down a notch by aging the leaves an extra 2-3 years. All tobaccos in this cigar are Nicaraguan.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.

I've chosen to review today a true classic from Drew Estate: the Joya de Nicaragua Antaño- but, with a twist. This Gran Reserva edition varies in a few aspects from the Antaño you may be familiar with. It's box-pressed, and the extra aging on its premium fillers promise it to be a smoother blend than the traditional Antaño. The dry draw imparts hints of molasses and fruit. Upon lighting I'm greeted with sweet notes of leather and coffee. As I suspected this cigar is less spice forward than the standard Antaño but its definitely still present, mostly on the retrohale. Moving past the halfway point that spice starts creeping in, complemented by a sweet chocolatey finish. It was at this point the cigar needed to be touched up a few times. This Antaño Grand Reserva finished as strong as it started with satisfying notes of chocolate and spice. A must try for Drew Estate fans, or fans of the Antaño looking for a change of pace. I'd recommend pairing this smooth, medium-plus bodied cigar, with a smooth Irish whiskey.

I purchased a box of these last year, and put them directly into a humidor to rest. I smoked one last weekend. Pure bliss! This cigar and the 1970 are light years apart. This cigar has turned into cocoa crème, leather, and plenty of beautiful earth. Outstanding!!!

Always a fan of Joya de Nicaragua this one was maybe my favorite of all time. It was incredibly smooth and milder than I expect from Joya. This thing just explodes with the chocolate taste and I almost never taste chocolate even in cigars your suppose to. Thing is a steal at under $10!

I enjoyed smoking this cigar today. It is supposed to be full but I thought it was medium to full. The taste was very mild and unlike someone else the flavor did not linger for a day. I will not be adding this one to humidor. But I might try me again down the road.

When smoking a cigar, I always think, "Will I smoke this again". This time around, I decided to smoke something that is both new AND old. Enter the Joya De Nicaragua Antaño GT20. This cigar was made to celebrate the 20 years of the Antaño family of lines, which have been very good for them. When removing this cigar from its cellophane it has that traditional sweet smell like most Antaño with some raisin-like notes (which I notice seems to be a staple in all of the JDN lines). Using my Xikar Xi2 cutter to give it a clean flawless cut, I gave it a cold draw test and found a nice and rich cinnamon taste with some light floral tones. Lighting up the cigar and taking the first puff was very delightful. The thick smoke has a chewy consistency that is rich in raisins and dates. It can almost be like a morning breakfast made of smoke. Inching down mid-way it slightly changes to a Cuban coffee type flavor with sweet and rich undertones. Entering the last quarter, the strength picks up to match the body and isn't so bad for a fuller-bodied smoker as myself. If you don't normally smoke stronger cigars, I suggest working your way up to it and eating a heavy meal before you light up a GT20. In the end, with not even a half inch left, I feel like grabbing another and making another pot of coffee. This is a very well-rounded cigar "even though it's boxed pressed". So, my conclusion is: Yes! I will smoke it again with pride.

This was the second one I smoked and I had issues with the tight draw i dont remember having with the first one. It was a breezy day and may just be bad luck catching a tightly wound one. I remember the first one smoking much better. They both tasted great with excellent construction feel looks and aroma tho. I'd want to smoke a third under better conditions to see how it performed.

Lots of chocolate and coffee flavors, this is on the sweet side. Burned slowly, draw was pretty good, has transition to some light spice in the second 3rd. Well made and very enjoyable. Give yourself about 1 hour and 45 minutes to smoke this.

This was a pretty good stick. It has all the flavors a good Nicaraguan smoke should have. It's worthy of a space in a well stocked humidor.

This is a powerhouse cigar and something of a good value at its price. Burn time felt like 2hrs+. It is a beautiful stick (great labels/bands) and the cold draw was like sucking on a chocolate-chip/raisin cookie. The flavor was intense and amped up quickly to full body. Big leather notes with a sweetness that frankly reminded me of maple-syrup-dipped bacon (I got the same character / flavor from the Cuatro Cinco robusto from Joya). It is deep and rich and left me light-headed. A Padron 1926 has more refinement, by comparison, but this cigar is not unrefined - it's just *big*. Really a world-class stick. Likely will buy and store a few more.

Surprisingly good stick for the price. Cold draw was chocolate-covered raisins and barnyard. Rich brown, veiny wrapper not as dark as pic (looks Maudro in pic). From light-up to nub, very consistent complex flavor profile with a decent mix of cedar and spice on top of nuttiness and chocolate/cream. Pleasantly surprised. Will consider buying again or exploring other vitolas in the line.

starts out full bodied, mellows out some after the first inch, but remains full throughout. Flawless box press construction, burn line no issues, stayed lit whole time. Was able to smoke down to a cool nub. This had a very complex set of flavors that worked really well together. Hints of pepper spice, chocolate and the cherry notes were a welcomed surprise. Not for a beginner smoker. This is one of the better cigars I have smoke in the last few months. Well worthy of its standing on the 2018 top 25 for cigar aficianado.

The Gran Reserva is exactly what you would expect... an aged version of the 1970. I was a bit disappointed in the lack of nuance. The 1970 has a raw richness to it and the Reserva is an aged version of same. Based on the potential of the 1970 I would have expected more but much like great single malt scotch aging at some point not only fails to add but begins to detract. Others may find this a more enjoyable smoke than the 1970. I did not... 90
