The Foundation Olmec Maduro cigar line was crafted as a tribute to the Olmec civilization which occupied the San Andres region in Mexico as well as other regions between 1600 and 400 BCE. The Olmecs were known to have been one of the first civilizations to use mathematical formulas to build pyramids and smoke cigars. The Olmec Maduro cigars were also created to honor the distinct tobacco that comes from this region. Its dark chocolatey Mexican San Andres maduro wrapper undergoes a slow, low temperature fermentation process, which preserves the tobaccos’ oils and contributes to the cigar’s overall flavor profile. The cigar’s Nicaraguan filler leaves are bale-aged for three years prior to rolling. This careful aging process allows the tobacco to develop its distinct flavors.

Cigar Origin
Nicaragua
Most cigars are manufactured in the Caribbean and Central America.
Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Wrapper Color
Maduro
Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).
Wrapper
Mexican San Andres Maduro
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Mexican tobacco is very dark and the best leaves can be used as maduro wrappers. San Andres Maduro is a thick, medium bodied dark leaf, also called San Andres Morron. Like Connecticut Broadleaf, San Andres Maduro is stalk cut and used for binder and wrapper.
Binder
Nicaragua
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.
Filler
Jalapa
Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.
Esteli
Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.
Rolled by
Handmade
Handmade cigars are completely made by hand from start to finish.
Manufacturer
AJ Fernandez
Cuban expatriate AJ Fernandez produces handmade cigars in Esteli, Nicaragua at the Tabacalera Fernandez factory. Fernandez learned everything he knows about tobacco and cigarmaking from his late grandfather, cigar legend Alejandro Robaina.

WOW! Foundation's crowning achievement in my humble opinion. One of the top five blends I've ever had the pleasure to smoke. Hearty construction, and full explosive flavour. Smoke with confidence!

Scott M.09/07/2026About: Foundation Olmec Maduro DB Corona 7" * 54

The Olmec Maduro was one of those cigars that impressed me almost immediately. Rich, full flavored, and exceptionally satisfying, with plenty of dark cocoa, espresso, earth, pepper, and a natural sweetness that keeps everything balanced. For a larger 7 x 54 cigar, it remained interesting throughout the entire smoke rather than becoming one-dimensional. The draw was excellent, smoke production was generous, and the flavors developed nicely as the cigar progressed. It's definitely a full-bodied cigar, but I found it rich rather than simply strong. This isn't necessarily an everyday cigar for me, but it's absolutely one I want to keep in the humidor. It's perfect for an evening when there's time to sit down with a good drink and actually enjoy a long cigar without being in a hurry. I'll be keeping a few on hand now, and once I have a little more humidor space, this is easily a cigar I'd stock ten at a time. Excellent cigar and definitely a keeper.

Dark SA Mx wrapper is handsome on this Foundation Olmec. Starts of peppery with cocoa and gradually the spice falls away to leave a pleasant balance of earth and fudge flavors. Construction not the best and a bit of burn issues. Draw was easy but not a big smoke bomb by any means.

Olivier H.07/07/2026About: Foundation Olmec Maduro Corona Gorda 5"1/2 * 48

The Foundation Olmec Maduro Corona Gorda is a wonderful cigar with a clear identity. It wasn't difficult to guess where this cigar wanted to take me. As I've mentioned in previous reviews, I'm a die-hard fan of authentic bean-to-bar chocolate, and this cigar immediately reminded me of the smoky, earthy character of a rustic Honduran dark chocolate before gradually mellowing into the softer, sweeter profile of a Peruvian one. Perhaps that's too specific for a cigar review, but that's exactly where it took me. Caramel and dark dried raisins naturally joined the profile, while baking spices remained in the background, adding structure without stealing the spotlight. The cigar evolved beautifully without ever losing its identity. Construction was very good overall. The burn was even, and the smoke output was exceptionally generous. The draw, however, was looser than I would have preferred, making the cigar smoke faster than expected. Fortunately, it never overheated, and the final third remained smooth, with no harsh bitterness. Some cigars keep you guessing. The Olmec Maduro doesn't. It knows exactly what it wants to be from the first draw and delivers on that promise right down to the nub. Distinctive, confident, and easily a new favorite.

Unwrapped smell: Cocoa, Wrapper surface quality: Toothy, no veins. Bonding: Tight. Construction: Dense box pressed. Clipped cold taste: leather with a medium draw. First flavors: Spicy red pepper & leather. The spiciness disappeared replaced by leather and hardwood which continue to the end of the smoking. Key flavor: Spicy red pepper & leather. Sharpness to tongue: Slight. Level of buzz: Medium. Burn Quality: Even. Ash quality: Flaky 3/4". Comments: Does not pair well with bourbon or brandy. OK with rum. Pairs well with tequila Agood example of a slightly spicy maduro cigar.

Little dark chocolate bomb. Love it.

John A.06/13/2026About: Foundation Olmec Maduro Corona Gorda 5"1/2 * 48

The same incredibly flavor and construction one can expect from an Olmec. I will say, I personally suggest the Double Corona because the larger size gives more room for the flavor to expand. Still a 10/10 stick, and one of my Top 3 without a doubt - regardless of what size you choose. For anyone considering grabbing an Olmec, DO IT! You will not be disappointed. Truly an amazing cigar.

John A.05/28/2026About: Foundation Olmec Maduro DB Corona 7" * 54

This is the best portrayal of what a Mexican wrapper is capable of. The name Olmec comes from one of the oldest Meso-American tribes which lived in parts of what is now Mexico, fitting huh? This initially peppery cigar packs a punch! However, it's stark first impression slowly melts into a smooth and sweet dark chocolate that I could not put down. I'm unsure if my Mexican Ancestors called me to pick out this cigar, but I'm thankful to the forces that led me to this beautiful Foundation cigar.

Nice dark flavors with a good draw. But had a problem about 2/3 of the way in I couldn't get any smoke and realized that the area around the cherry was rock hard and not burning properly I ended up having to cut it off and relight to get it goingagain. The Foundation Olmec Maduro Gordo is a top 5 cigar on my list. It has garnered positive reviews for its rich flavor profile and excellent construction. Crafted with a Mexican San Andrés wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, and Nicaraguan fillers, it offers a complex smoking experience. First Third: Upon lighting, the cigar presents notes of dark chocolate, hazelnut, oak, and a subtle spice, creating a dry yet flavorful profile. Second Third: The flavor deepens with the introduction of oak, black pepper spice, and earthiness, occasionally complemented by hints of cocoa and leather. Final Third: The profile intensifies with dominant oak and pepper notes, while cocoa and leather remain in the background. Overall: This cigar is amazing and deserves a try for anyone that loves a rich and smooth smoke.

People who love cigars know this one. Nothing good stays secret for long in the world of tobacco, and the Olmec is a stick beloved by old guys and young guys alike, as well as a few ladies I've met. It is frequently sold-out despite being produced in quantity. Here's why: remarkably consistent construction, world-class box-pressed draw, big chocolate and toasted nut notes which suggest a Snickers bar, mild but present spice, smooth as silk, perfect for every occasion but those demanding greater expense. It's just a knockout cigar with nothing wrong with it. There are only a few vitolas in the line and not much variation between, so you'd do well to trust your usual preference, all are excellent. As a maduro appreciator I find this stick ideally balanced, but the claro is also excellent for those looking for a lighter smoke. Anyone who appreciates Mexican San Maduro tobacco should buy several, if not a box.

Richard D.05/04/2024About: Foundation Olmec Maduro Corona Gorda 5"1/2 * 48

You can spend thousands over several years experimenting like me, or you can just take my word for it ... simply the best MSA Maduro in the marketplace ... just punch a hole in the cap and get the best draw and flavor for the money you can find. I also really like the construction and feel of this particular box pressed vitola. I try to keep at least 5 of these in one of my humidors at all times ... but it is tough resisting partaking daily ... buy them when you see them in stock.

Foundation cigars are for me a discovery. I tried them thanks to this pack. All cigars where great. I am not fond of full bodied strong cigars but the Gueguense Toro Huaco was super duper. The Charter Oak, the least expensive of the pack happens to be in my opinion the best cigar in this price range so I now got a whole box of them. The cigar cutter is a top quality cutter.

My first Foundation cigars did not disappoint. This is how a sampler should be put together. Including a product guide should be a standard, and I hope more brands will do the same. The cutter, too, is beautiful and heavy duty. I haven’t used it because I don’t want to tarnish it, but trust me it’s sharp haha

Hopefully I just got a dud, but this one compared to the Natural/Claro was a rough ride. It was as if you took the strength of a Padron and dialed it up to 11, then paired it with flavor from Gurkha, but all the way down to a 1. The draw was wide open, and it didn't really have any flavors other than nicotine and ash. The few puffs I did take were extremely full powered too, the strongest blast of nicotine I've ever had. Either lay these down to rest for a century, or I had a dud.

Whether you’re a Foundation Cigars fan or have never tried them, this is the way to sample a few different samples of Nick Melillo’s amazing blends. He’s a master and I’m already a big fan. You get a great cutter which is my second Foundation cutter, as well as a product guide with a description of all his blends. Neptune rocks!

Wonderful smoke! The Olmec does not disappoint and this version is no exception. The San Andreas wrapper adds a great flavor. Notes of nuts, espresso and chocolate. Very even burn and perfect draw (I used a punch). Will definitely be looking for this version in the future.

I was impressed with this attractive, box-pressed cigar. Well constructed with a great burn, good draw, and good smoke output all the way through. Bold, steady flavor without an overwhelming pepper or spice. I am already wanting another.

Olmec Cigar reigns as the number one cigar in the market today. Rich flavor profile, and captivating smoke make it an unrivaled masterpiece.

Cedar cream toasted bread not very spicy. At 12 bucks a great stick.

Rich creamy earthy flavor with a touch of sweetness on the finish. Clouds of thick creamy smoke. Excellent cigar!

Great smoke!!

Craig B.05/23/2023About: Foundation Olmec Maduro Corona Gorda 5"1/2 * 48

Ok so one might expect a lot from this one. Well,,,, I had to keep relighting it and the draw was hard. Even after piercing it 4x. It was not over humidified as it had been in my 65 dry box for a week and measured with meter at 66RH. It cleared up a wee bit after 1/2 through but it was a pain and not enjoyable. This is the 3rd Olmec that’s been this way. I won’t order Olmec again. Too many other ones to choose from.

Meh. Neat concept but flavor profile not for me.

This is a cigar that truly lives up to the hype. If you like Maduro you will love this cigar. My only downside which is just me personally is it did have a big strength kick!

One of my favorite Foundation cigars. Full bodied and medium full strength. I have enjoyed it immensely I'm more than one vitola. Easily box worthy.

Yosua HP N.11/26/2022About: Foundation Olmec Maduro DB Corona 7" * 54

Jet black wrapper. Okay weight on the hands. Almost no smell off the wrapper, sweet choco and tobacco off the foot. Cold draw of tobacco and rubber balloons. Off the rip over toasted french toast with maple syrup. Very sweet honey smell off the footsmoke. This tastes like a Padron with all the settings dialed up to 11. Wonderful
