Illusione Haut 10

This medium-bodied Nicaraguan puro is special in the sense that it is commemorating Illusione's first 10 years in the tobacco industry. Brand creator Dion Giolito did not let the FDA's new 2016 regulations slow him down in the slightest, and now we have the Illusione Haut 10 to celebrate the start of many, many more years of cigar excellence. Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Not every cigar needs to make a grand entrance. Some win you over with quiet confidence—and that’s exactly what the Illusione Haut 10 Churchill does. It doesn’t rely on flashy branding or overwhelming strength. Instead, it focuses on balance, complexity, and a kind of subtle elegance that reveals itself slowly with each draw. This Churchill-size cigar is longer than your average smoke, but that’s part of the appeal. It gives the blend more time to evolve, and Illusione takes full advantage of that space. The first third opens with clean, focused flavors. Cedar, a touch of pepper, and a nutty, almost toasted quality that sets the tone. The draw is easy, and the smoke is creamy and dense without being heavy. What really makes the Haut 10 stand out is its balance. It leans toward medium-full in strength, but it’s never harsh or overwhelming. Newer smokers won’t find it intimidating, and seasoned cigar lovers will appreciate the layers it offers. As it burns, the profile gradually deepens. Hints of leather, espresso, and a bit of natural sweetness come in—nothing too bold, just enough to keep things interesting. Construction is excellent, as you’d expect from a cigar produced at the Aganorsa Leaf factory. The burn line stays sharp, the ash holds well, and the cigar smokes cool and steady all the way through. Pre-light: cream, cedar, sweet cracker. 1/3: cedar, cream, nuttiness, white bread. Lots of pepper on the retrohale. Smooth and creamy finish. Smoke was a little thin. Burn was poor, touch up required. 2/3: Pepper, nuttiness, cedar, cream, butter. 3/3: Cedar, charred wood, salt. Another touch up required. Flavors were pretty good and it’s was an above average cigar. Was it worth $15, no. Not sure if it was the touch ups but this cigar only lasted me about a hour and 15 minutes. I had extremely high hopes for this based on hype and price, but I won’t be spending $15 on this cigar again.

Big fan of Illusione. I love their stuff. However in the sense of fairness, I have to smoke this cigar again. It had a great draw and a really nice burn. It was even and smooth. This is the cigar Dion Giolito created to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Illusione brand, a boutique brand that since its inception has been graced with popularity among cigar lovers and great ratings from cigar magazines. The Haut 10 uses a Nicaraguan wrapper that is very light brown and select Aganorsa tobacco in the filler: Nicaraguan Criollo 98 and Corojo 99 Seco. The size is one that I have come to appreciate more and more these days: a chubby robusto 5 1/2 inches by 52 ring gauge. Still small but the ample ring gauge allows for lots of smoke, fuller flavor, and an effortless draw. The appearance is nice with a triple cap that ends in a pigtail and a very understated band. The taste of this cigar is varied and complex: nuts, earthiness, pepper, toast, coffee, cedar...all flavors were very satisfying and shifting throughout the 2 hour smoke (to the nub, yes!). The burn and ash can only be described as sublime. I highly recommend this amazing cigar!
