Joya Black can be seen as a full bodied version of the Joya Red, featuring a Mexican San Andres Negro (Oscuro) wrapper, with Nicaraguan fillers. This is a smoke with sweet and creamy notes but also with complexity and strength. A spectacular cigar.

Most cigars are manufactured in the Caribbean and Central America.
Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

Mexican San Andres Maduro
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Mexican tobacco is very dark and the best leaves can be used as maduro wrappers. San Andres Maduro is a thick, medium bodied dark leaf, also called San Andres Morron. Like Connecticut Broadleaf, San Andres Maduro is stalk cut and used for binder and wrapper.

Nicaragua
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.

Not bad for the price. Drew Estate sources good tobacco for the most part. Seems there is a variety of tobaccos in these as taste is inconsistent, even within the same cigar. Some draws will give a nice taste, others a bad taste. But, again for the price, and my purposes, they are sufficient.

I've had consistently great experience from this brand, and this cigar met my expectations. Early strength almost full, then mellowed to medium, then finished med-to-full. Rich, complex, mostly earthy and woody flavors with nuance of coffee and cedar along the way. Tastes more like a quality Nicaraguan habano with a touch of semisweet maduro. Decent burn but needed a couple of touch-ups. A worthy maduro if I am in the mood for a slightly bolder, earthier San Andres stick.

My favorite mexican san andraes cigar (#2 being the Lunatic Short Robusto). Very balanced (almost like a Liga UF-13 blended with a Lunatic) and nuanced. This is right up there with the Joya Red and Silver in quality (perfect draw, perfect construction), so it really depends on the flavor I am seeking, but heck of a cigar.

May 19, 2020: Second time smoking this and I believe it’s just as good as the first. I got 2 of these on the same day and it’s now 8 months between them. I can’t say that the resting mellowed it out much or made this any smoother. Flavors remain consistent of a salty espresso, leather and pepper. A lot of smoke output with a nice aroma. Peppery retro. Sept. 12, 2019: I don’t think I’ve had a bad Drew Estate smoke yet, and this one is no exception. In my opinion I think they all share a similar profile of a sweet creamy flavor with a slight pepper on the retro and finish. I can’t quite place exactly what it taste like to me, but all I know is I like it. Fairly consistent throughout with no burn issues or draw issues with a straight cut. Plenty of smoke output to bring out all of the flavor. For the price point this is a definite go to smoke!

Joya Black is my favorite cigar right now. This little 4x32 is well constructed, puts out generous smoke, and is very good. Flavor is not as pronounced as it's bigger brothers, but is a great short smoke, and an opportunity to provide good premium tobacco to those casual, or non-cigar smokers in your life without breaking the bank.

Jekyll and Hyde cigar. Chopped well above the cap and it still tried to unwind on me. Burn issues. Several runners requiring touch ups. Had to fight to keep lit. Excellent flavors though! Chocolate cookie, coconut, Mounds bar, dark leather, light coffee and pepper. Super flavorful but damn was it a pain to keep lit. Will try again though.

My favorite cigar to date. I get immediate notes of dark chocolate covered berries (seems to be primarily Açaí). A little pepper. Some buttered toast that comes and goes. Also a little nutty.

I have only had one of these and did not care for it. It struggled to stay lit and did draw very well. I eventually snuffed it and lit something else.

I tried this at my local brick and mortar shop. The tobacconist recommended it since I enjoy the original Joya. This is a very complex cigar that has a faint echo of sweet berries and bitter dark chocolate on the back notes. Maybe aging will bring it to greatness. Not bad at all. I'll stick with the original Joya.

Great looking wrapper. Draw a little stiff for me personally, but consistent and quality. Nice burn line. Leaves a great after taste coating in mouth. Rich, earthy and If I may say, I experienced a bery dry, dark licorice taste halfway through the smoke. Still maintains a signature Joya taste. Very nice
