Casdagli Club Mareva

Casdagli Cigars created the Club Mareva cigar in celebration of its partnership with Cigar Club Mareva in Split, Croatia, which hosts the annual Cigar Smoking World Championship. A medium-strength cigar, Club Mareva features a natural Brazilian wrapper that expertly shrouds a binder and filler from the Dominican Republic. The Club Mareva's blend was specially selected by Hendrik Kelner Jr. of the famous Kelner family of Master Blenders at the KBF factory, which is located in Santiago, Dominican Republic.

Costa Rica’s ideal climate and fertile soil make it the perfect environment for producing premium tobacco. Primarily used as a filler or binder, Costa Rican tobacco is gaining popularity as a wrapper too. Their exquisite maduro wrapper leaves are recognized for being full-bodied. Located just south of Nicaragua in Central America, Costa Rica has become a primary source of tobacco for boutique cigar makers.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Ecuador is the perfect place to grow wrappers, because it is located on the Equator! And it has rich soils too. The weather conditions, with a nearly permanent cloudy sky, provide a natural shade, protecting the wrapper plants from sunshine and allowing the tobacco to grow thin and light. Ecuador supplies Connecticut and Sumatra type wrappers to many cigar factory in the world.

Casdagli is one of my favorite cigar makers. I've loved every cigar I've tried from them...except for this one. I didn't like it at all. The one I smoked had 4 months of rest at ~64%. It was rolled very tight and felt hard as a rock. As such, it had a very tight draw. It started out with a very pronounced bitter note that stayed present throughout the entire cigar with varying intensity. The first third had a subtle citrus note that faded quickly. The rest of the cigar produced (somewhat muted) flavors of cocoa, dark chocolate, bitter coffee bean and a medium amount of spice. The finish was quick and dry. The final third was the only part of the cigar that I found somewhat enjoyable. The overall profile tasted like what I'd describe as generic tobacco. Bland and uninteresting. Very surprising but this is one Casdagli cigar that I would not recommend.

Very cubanesque. As Cubans become more and more expensive, I think more folks will shift to profiles such as this one. Excellent cigar even taking price into account.
