A decade ago, Jim Robinson, the Jim behind “Island Jim Cigars”, in collaboration with Oscar Valladares released the Leaf by Oscar cigar. It was supposed to be a house blend for Jim’s cigar shop. However, it became such a hit, that the Leaf by Oscar was eventually made available to everyone. The Leaf by Oscar 10th Anniversary Criollo commemorates this highly popular cigar’s first milestone anniversary. The cigar features a savory Criollo maduro wrapper covering a binder and filler made of top-shelf Honduran tobacco. Once rolled, each cigar is encased by an actual tobacco leaf instead of cellophane. While the cigar’s “leafy” packaging made an eye-catching sensation when it was first released, its great construction, delicious flavors, and wallet-pleasing price made it an enduring hit. The cigars are handmade in Honduras at Oscar Valladares’ factory.

Most cigars are manufactured in the Caribbean and Central America.
Honduras, a Central American country which shares a border with Nicaragua, is widely known in the premium cigar industry as the ideal place to grow Cuban and Connecticut seed tobaccos. Danli and the Jamastran Valley is considered the heart of Honduras’ cigar industry. The Jamastran Valley is known for producing a full-bodied tobacco that draws strong comparisons to the tobacco grown in the Pinar del Rio region of Cuba. This same region is also known for its Connecticut shade grown and Corojo shade grown tobacco. In addition, Honduras produces Cuban-seed sun grown filler tobaccos of the highest quality.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

Honduran cigar wrapper has the reputation of great quality, with wrapper leaf being grown in the Jamastran, Talanga and San Agustin valleys. Some of the wrappers being grown in Honduras include Corojo, Honduran Claro, Honduran Criollo, Honduran Jamastran Viso Rosado, Honduran San Agustin Havana Seed and San Agustin Ligero.

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Criollo tobacco was originally developed for filler, but was found to be tasty as a wrapper when shade-grown. Criollo means "native" in Spanish. I received this cigar as a gift from a BoTL who sent it to me after hearing that I had not yet smoked one of Oscar’s creations. I got my hands on a Connecticut, and I loved it. Smoking through the band was the best part of the experience. After dealing with the stress of job hunting, running from Hurricane Milton, and getting sick, I decided to take the afternoon to myself, and sit on my families porch in South Georgia, with a cup of coffee, and set aside enough time to enjoy this 6x60 stick. Using a V-Cut to create a Crown cut on the head, the Pre-Draw delivered a perfect draw, with very light notes of nuts and sweetness. Start time: 12:20pm Lightly toasting the foot led to full notes of Chocolate, Nutmeg, and Coffee. These flavors stay consistent, with hints of cinnamon popping through. The burn started to become uneven, however a quick nudge with my torch fixed that, however the ash fell soon after correcting the burn. I know that a ‘long ash’ isn’t always an indicator of the quality of a stick, however there’s just something overly pleasing about seeing a very long ash. As I smoked into the Second Third, notes of molasses entered the smoke flavor, leaving a nice sweet flavor, with the other notes still prevalent. As I reached the Third, portion of this I was increasingly anxious to reach the band, but I have to say - I was disappointed. The band threw off the entire profile of this stick, and I quickly removed it. What was done, was done however, and my palate was not able to recover. I smoked on the final third a bit, and then laid it down End time: 2:00pm

Much better than the others of the leaf line by Oscar. Aroma: creamy chocolate and spices Virgin draw: creamy, dense nuts and dark raisins First third: Dark raisins, bread, cream, mild pepper and spices with leather peaking through every now and then. Halfway: raisins are dominant with pepper and spices while the bread takes a seat way back. Leather peaks through a little more but not over bearing. Dark raisins, Maduro earth and spices are the main player. The aroma is dense and delicious. Last: a lot of spices, cinnamon and pepper. Still delicious and cream coming back. Powerful cigar. Smoke slow and enjoy. Pairs well with a cappuccino, mission dark rum or pumpkin flavored dessert.

Quality cigar.. I think I enjoyed the Sumatra wrapper more but I would definitely try again. Perhaps more time in the humidor. The draw was tight and I had to correct it twice.
