The world's most famous cigar brand. Launched in Cuba by Menendez Garcia y Cia., the Montecristo distributed in the U.S. is handmade in the Dominican Republic. It is a medium to full bodied cigar with a sweet aroma and impeccable construction.

The Dominican Republic is the world's first producer of cigars. Most factories are located in Santiago, in the center of the island, and in close proximity to the tobacco fields grown in the fertile Cibao Valley. While tobacco and cigars have always traditionally been produced in the Dominican Republic, many Cuban cigar makers established in the Dominican Republic after the Cuban communist revolution, elevating the quality of Dominican cigars.

The Connecticut Valley, in the Northeast of the USA, is well known for its bright golden wrapper. Because of a very hot and sunny summer, the tobacco is shade grown to make the leaf more delicate with few veins and even surface. Connecticut Shade wrapper grown in the United States has a mild to medium flavor and a silky quality, making it one of the most expensive and sought-after cigar wrappers in the cigar industry.

Dominican Republic
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Dominican Republic is a traditional tobacco-growing country. In the 60's, a Cuban seed was introduced and the resulting tobacco, called Piloto Cubano, became famous as a good substitute of the Cuban tobacco that was no longer allowed to enter the USA. Piloto Cubano is full bodied while the Dominican Olor tobacco is milder but more aromatic.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.
Filler (or “tripa” in Spanish) is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar. NeptuneCigar.com Aside from the slight sizing difference, the main thing that sets them apart is the wrapper. The wrapper used is different. The Classic uses what the manufacturer calls a "select Connecticut shade" wrapper.

Benjamin The present rate is $AUD1,663.36/kilogram of tobacco plus GST. This will increase on 1 September and goes up every 6 months. The Cuban Monte No 2 (which is slightly longer and thicker) weighs 14.26 gms, so working from that, a box of 25 would bear duty of approx $AUD356.50, plus shipping, plus GST . The rates are on the ATO website-under Excise Duty rates for Tobacco under Tariff Item 5.5

Construction: The first thing that stood out to me on this stick was how smooth and oily the shade grown wrapper was. As soon as I picked it up the velvet oily smoothness was quite overt. The oily caramel coloured wrapper had minimal veins with invisible seams and was hiding a few pronounced lumps and bumps in the binder. The pack was quite inconsistent along the length of the cigar being quite spongy at both the foot and the head while being rock hard in the middle. The pack looked visibly loose on the foot when visually inspecting it, nonetheless the cigar was neatly finished with a double cap. Smell: Smell on the wrapper was a very pronounced with Lucerne hay (Lucerne hay has a greener more cucumber freshness to it over standard brown barn hay). The foot smelt quite similar with stronger tones of tobacco. Cold Draw: Flavours on the loose cold draw were dominated by rich woody tobacco notes coupled with the lucerne hay. This cigar was surprisingly strong on the cold draw, producing huge, easily identifiable flavours. First Light: Flavours on the first light consisted primarily of tobacco, wood and nut. Hiding behind the dominant flavours was a sweet caramel coupled with an extremely timid coffee. The cigar was producing excellent plumes of smoke with a slight oil being deposited on the palate. Aroma: Once in a lifetime in here in Mackay the wind abates; that being said I managed to experience the aroma of this cigar without having to stick the cherry up my nose for a pleasant change. The aroma produced by this cigar was very sweet on the nose with subtle hints of white bread and nut. Had one while at a hookah lounge and really enjoyed it. I previously had a Cuban No. 2 and thought this would be around the same. It burns slow like it's Cuban brother and makes a great alternative.

I was really excited to try this stick, i was hopeing it would give me and idea to what all the hype is about when it comes to the cuban monte. no2. If the cuban version is anything like this it would be a great disapointment for me. a good cigar, but average, over priced, the name no.2 is why this stick costs so much, not because its spectacular!
