CLE Prieto is one of the first cigars that Christian Eiroa of CLE has made in Nicaragua and also one of the boldest. Traditionally, CLE Cigars have been made in Honduras but Eiroa wanted to try something new. These box pressed premium cigars are handmade with a dark Connecticut Broadleaf maduro wrapper and Nicaraguan binder and filler. Medium to full bodied, the CLE Prieto cigars are each wrapped in tissue paper.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

USA Connecticut Broadleaf
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Connecticut Broadleaf is grown in the United States' Connecticut Valley and is prized for its dark, oily, full flavored and aromatic characteristics. The plants are grown in full sun giving this cigar wrapper its characteristic sweetness. The Connecticut Broadleaf plant leaves are mainly processed as maduro tobacco. Today, Connecticut Broadleaf seeds are being grown in other countries besides the United States.
Binder
Nicaragua
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.

There was mold just beginning to grow under the paper. It was not my storage. I use 62 bovedas and have never had mold on anything. Wiped it off and smoked it anyway. This is a very hard box press so the burn was a little wonky.

I found this a little bitter on first light, but about a third of the way though a very satisfying smoke. Great draw, got a little off center in the middle but straightened itself out without fussing over it, no relight, and burned great all the way through. Not a huge fan of the oval shape but I found it very satisfying. Will make a nice addition to the rotation.

I really like this cigar. I want to buy more and age them. It reminds me of the Padron 1964 boxed pressed cigars (yes like comparing a mid range bourbon to pappy). This one is going to make regular appearance in my humidor. The smell is fantastic (reminds me of New England in the fall after the rain - that great smell the fallen leaves get), the burn is slightly off but not an issue. The taste is leather and wood - no gimmicks (no sweetness, nothing to mask the fact that you are smoking a cigar). The shape and draw are perfect for a box pressed cigar. And the price? I would be happy paying more for this one! Well done. (Not a fan of the paper wrapper - that can be ditched but not a big deal)

Nice presentation, wrapper and band. Rectangular tablet like box pressed cigar, with sharp angles. The shape takes some getting used to. Beautiful dark perfect wrapper, no veins, barely visible seams. Cold draw is impecable, giving hints of chocolate and licorice, with the defining sweetness of the Maduro Wrapper. Once lit, a complex delicious blend of flavors delight, a bit of coffee bean, some chocolate and other flavors I struggle to describe. It is a moist perfectly balanced 5 star flavor. Slow burning, low volume of very thick smoke, with a white ash holding for almost 2 inches. Second 3rd turns up the heat with plenty spice becomes earthy while still moist and lightly sweet. Perfect finish, mellow tasty complex earth, chocolate, coffee bean with a slight sweetness and bitternes combo. 5.5 stars of Taste and Complexity.

This Cigar have awesome taste, Dark Chocolate, Robusta Coffee, I ordered because Luz Pick. I was not convinced because Full Strenght but in my Opinion this cigar is Medium/Full. At the biggining I thought too tight draw but later I saw Burn was ok, did not turn off and loose some. But I found out "prieto" means Tight, so thats why I rate 5 Star Draw, mayor tighter cigars I had smoke tend to turn off this one not. Flavor is perfect many full cigars saturate too much this cigar is good until the end.. I only bought 1 piece to try because Staff Pick but I regret did not buy few more. Will buy again Definitly, I think this cigar easy can reach 95 Point.

Even though CLE is a relative newcomer to the market, you just can't go wrong when you choose to smoke a CLE cigar. The star this week is the CLE Prieto Robusto. The presentation of this cigar is very unique and beautiful, as the company chooses to protect their sticks with tissue paper instead of cellophane. Prieto means "dark" in Spanish, and this maduro wrapper certainly looks like dark chocolate. But this is not where the similarities end. Like good dark chocolate, the flavors of this cigar are intense and complex with a medium to full body. Notes of nuts, sweet cocoa, and espresso can be enjoyed throughout the smoke with just the slightest hint of spice. The cigar burns with the whitest ash and draws flawlessly. Keep a few of these in your rotation and thank me later!

I like to try a robusto on a first try, as to my palate, that size seems to accentuate the blend. I tried the Prieto first in a robusto and found it excellent. Then, I tried the 6x52. It excelled! Chocolate and leather in a smooth smoke. It was a bit stiff in the draw at first, but required no touch up, and burned slowly and evenly, easing up as it went. A truly great cigar!

Though I prefer a Maduro, I tried its sister Chele (blond) first, and found it a wonderful blend of spice and butter, and promptly ordered a box. These cigars were my 1st box purchase. I smoked a couple in local lounge and decided I wanted a whole box. Unfortunately, they were not great young. I smoked one every couple moths and now that I am at 15 months or so, they are delicious. Your mileage may vary, but these are wonderful full flavor syrupy rich cigars with rest. I'm planning on smoking them pretty regularly to take advantage of their current flavor.

This has quickly become one of my favorite smokes. Comes out the gate great! The draw is very good, the burn isn't perfect. I had to touch it up here and there, but was minor in comparison to the enjoy I received from this cigar. Highly recommend!!

This is Christian Eiroas first Nicaraguan cigar as his others have been Honduran. The Prieto is a beautiful box pressed cigar with a Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper. The binder and filler are Nicaraguan. Upon first light, notes of cocoa are up front along with some earthy and coffee notes. Into the second third, pretty much the same notes are apparent but coffee notes take over. Into the last third, the coffee and chocolate notes combine for a perfect finish. Very smooth cigar with great flavor. This cigar is a nice medium smoke. It has excellent construction--no relights, strong white ash, no flaking and good smoke output. The draw was perfect and the cigar smoked cool from start to finish. Overall, this cigar was a pleasure to smoke and definitely a must try!!
