Crowned Heads founder Jon Huber is fond of naming his cigars after songs or musicians. And the CHC Serie E is no exception. This extension to the Crowned Heads Court line is a nod to the rock classic “Eruption,” a stirring guitar solo performed by none other than Eddie Van Halen of Van Halen. The Serie E (the “E” stands for Eruption) is an imposing stick with a dark Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro wrapper that telegraphs its explosive complexity of flavors. The wrapper is accompanied by a compilation of premium leaves from some of the best tobacco growing regions in Nicaragua. The CHC Serie E is hand crafted at Tabacalera Pichardo in Nicaragua.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.

Ecuadorian Habano
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Ecuadorian Habano wrapper has become one of the most used cigar wrappers in the market. Grown primarily by the Oliva family, this tobacco originated from Habano or H2000 seeds brought to Ecuador from Cuba. This leaf is rich and flavorful thanks to the temperate climate of Ecuador and the quality of its volcanic soil.

Nicaragua
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

Luciano Tobaccos produces cigars for some of the most highly recognized cigar brands in the world under nondisclosure agreements (NDAs). In 2019, Pichardo partnered with Luciano Meirelles and Tiago Splitter to form Luciano Cigars.

I was a huge fan of the idea behind this blend and was very happy with the earlier vitolas I've tried (6x48 being my favorite), but the weather where I live it unpredictable and often pretty terrible for smoking and it's great to have a smaller format for those days. This one doesn't disappoint.

When I stumbled across the Crowned Heads CHC Serie E Hermoso a few weeks back, I knew very little about it. However, I had seen the red, black and white pattern before. Then a light bulb went off in my head... the Eddie Van Halen truck on the cover of a 1993 Truckn' magazine! Damn, bringing memories like that back is hard. So, I had to smoke it! Since that week I have smoked it at least twice a week and learned that this cigar paid tribute to his guitar solo in '83. Without further ado, here is how my most recent experience went. It has a dark oily Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, which has a great earthy smell and a very pungent aroma of fresh picked plums. After giving it a clean straight cut, I toasted the foot and took my first puffs. It had a blast of dried fruit and leather right at the beginning. The retro hale leaves a slight sting but leaves a great long-lasting aroma of leather. Makes me imagine how Eddie Van Halen's leather jackets must have smelled like back in the 80s. I had this same combo of sweet tobacco, exotic fruits and that new leather wallet you got for Christmas. I remove the band of the cigar, so I don't burn it, fully intending on keeping it for my favorite's collection. Then I thought to myself I wish I kept that 1993 magazine so I could frame it with this band. This cigar was burning perfectly, and it had very little transitions in flavor. My overall experience lasted for about 73 minutes until it got too hot for my fingers. This is a straightforward cigar that had some good smooth flavorful, full body smoke that didn't give you the full-strength kick between the leather chaps. If you loved those days of hairspray and jean jackets than this will help you remember those good ol' times. Now go grab a few, put on some Van Halen, and Dance the Night Away with an Eruption of smoke. PANAMA!

Good construction with periodic touch ups required. A one word description: confusingly complex. just too much going on too quickly. It's enjoyable, but buy another cigar with ... just in case.

All fundamentals being excellent about this cigar, in the end it left me completely "Puzzled". I gave it 5 star for taste and I didn't even "like" it, by my definition of what I know to be a good cigar. I had to be honest with myself and acknowledge that this cigar's complexity is beyond my pallet (at this time). It's very "cuban like" but a cuban cigar with a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper and a Dominican binder. Analogy: there's jazz, there's great jazz, then there's Miles Davis. There's Rock, there's Great Rock, then there's Hendrix. A must try if you want to challenge and expand your pallet. Try it again if you think you really "had" it (but this time, slow down and see if you can "get" this cigar.
