The Matilde Limited Exposure is a series of limited release premium cigars by this storied brand. The cigars in this series will be available in limited quantities and offered at certain times throughout the year. Each cigar in the series bears the blend’s number and the year it was produced. This beautifully crafted cigar features a mouthwatering, oily dark Mexican maduro wrapper placed over a binder and filler made of Dominican Republic leaves. Handmade in the Dominican Republic, the Matilde Limited Exposure is produced by Tabacalera La Isla factory, which is owned by Hostos Fernandez Quesada.

Most cigars are manufactured in the Caribbean and Central America.
The Dominican Republic is the world's first producer of cigars. Most factories are located in Santiago, in the center of the island, and in close proximity to the tobacco fields grown in the fertile Cibao Valley. While tobacco and cigars have always traditionally been produced in the Dominican Republic, many Cuban cigar makers established in the Dominican Republic after the Cuban communist revolution, elevating the quality of Dominican cigars.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Mexican tobacco is very dark and the best leaves can be used as maduro wrappers. In San Andres de Tuxtla (in the state of Vera Cruz), there is a very interesting production of Sumatra seed wrappers. Dark air cured tobaccos are produced in Mexico, mainly in Vera Cruz and Tampico provinces, on the East Coast along the Gulf. There is also some production in Yucatan. Mexico's volcanic soil yields tobacco that is spicy and earthy, with a very distinctive flavor.
Binder
Dominican Republic
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Dominican Republic is a traditional tobacco-growing country. In the 60's, a Cuban seed was introduced and the resulting tobacco, called Piloto Cubano, became famous as a good substitute of the Cuban tobacco that was no longer allowed to enter the USA. Piloto Cubano is full bodied while the Dominican Olor tobacco is milder but more aromatic.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.
Filler (or “tripa” in Spanish) is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar. The Dominican Republic is considered one of the most premier tobacco growing countries in the world. The filler tobacco grown in this Caribbean island nation ranges from mild to full bodied. Olor Dominicano and Piloto Cubano are the main types of tobacco grown in the Dominican Republic.

Matilde's Limited Exposure No. 1 weighs in at 6" by 50 and is composed of San Andres Wrapper with HVA, Piloto Cubano, and Corojo fillers. This particular cigar was made in 250 boxes of 20 and was released in September of 2021. When I went in for the cut I noticed without trying to, that the triple cap on the cigar was very well constructed and made for a very easy and effective straight cut. The initial light brought some pretty solid spice that after about a 1/4" mellowed. The draw was perfect for me, the slight resistance of a well but not overly packed cigar is a great way to start any stick. As soon as the cigar warmed up it developed a very nice creamy texture that lasted throughout and the rest of the profile emerged. Throughout the cigar I found a consistency of a modest spice, wood, and leather. I started to notice the coco off the San Andres coming through into the second third and a light earthiness into the middle of it. Predictably, the cigar got stronger the more it burned with coco and earth becoming more abundant. Had absolutely no problems with the construction of the cigar; it burned straight, great draw, long ash, healthy and easily cut cap, chef's kiss! I have to say, for a medium to full bodied guy like me this was really a nice one. If you like some spice (not overpowering) and enjoy the adventure of trying different cigars, I hope you're able to get your hands on this one because for 10 bucks the flavors and quality of construction will make this a reliable and entertaining experience from a group you probably haven't tried. Looking forward to trying more from Jose Seijas's Matilde!
