Following hot on the heels of his first Dominican Republic release (the Chinchalle), Kyle Gellis, owner and founder of Warped Cigars, decided to release a second stick made on this Caribbean island nation, which is known for its excellent tobacco. The Companion de Warped features a savory, dark Mexican San Andres wrapper placed over a Dominican Cotul binder, and a filler made of Dominican and Nicaraguan leaves. This blend of Central American and Caribbean tobaccos provides a very enjoyable medium-strength and flavorful smoking indulgence. Like its predecessor, the Companion de Warped is expertly crafted at the Tabacalera La Isla factory, which is owned and operated by Hostos Fernandez Quesada. Hostos has been in the cigar industry for twenty years and is the nephew of Manuel “Manolo” Quesada of the famed Quesada Cigars.

Most cigars are manufactured in the Caribbean and Central America.
The Dominican Republic is the world's first producer of cigars. Most factories are located in Santiago, in the center of the island, and in close proximity to the tobacco fields grown in the fertile Cibao Valley. While tobacco and cigars have always traditionally been produced in the Dominican Republic, many Cuban cigar makers established in the Dominican Republic after the Cuban communist revolution, elevating the quality of Dominican cigars.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

Mexican San Andres Maduro
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Mexican tobacco is very dark and the best leaves can be used as maduro wrappers. San Andres Maduro is a thick, medium bodied dark leaf, also called San Andres Morron. Like Connecticut Broadleaf, San Andres Maduro is stalk cut and used for binder and wrapper.

The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Dominican Republic is a traditional tobacco-growing country. In the 60's, a Cuban seed was introduced and the resulting tobacco, called Piloto Cubano, became famous as a good substitute of the Cuban tobacco that was no longer allowed to enter the USA. Piloto Cubano is full bodied while the Dominican Olor tobacco is milder but more aromatic.

The Dominican Republic is considered one of the most premier tobacco growing countries in the world. The filler tobacco grown in this Caribbean island nation ranges from mild to full bodied. Olor Dominicano and Piloto Cubano are the main types of tobacco grown in the Dominican Republic.

Well, I read positive reviews and had high hopes for this little stick. I smoked two today. The first had a pretty tight draw but bold flavors. So I picthed the first one and fired up a second. Much better construction, draw and burn on the second one but the flavors were much more subtle. Was getting coffee, cream, leather and spice. Decent stick and will smoke my last three at some point but nothing special (to me).

wow this one surprised me. have always been a Warped fan, but hadn't smoked this one until just recently. loaded with flavor and the burn/construction was outstanding. will buy a lot of of these in the future. not a boring cigar.

I have smoked a bunch of these and they are excellent cigars. I am a big fan of Warped cigars and this is another hit. The draw is usually a bit tight but manageable. It is a complex cigar with some major transitions in 4 1/2", which is impressive. It starts out with toasty cedar and floral notes with a good amount of spice. The second half produces flavors of unsweetened cocoa and espresso. It is pricy for a Rothschild but I think it's worth it.

I'll admit I'm a little biased because I love Warped, Kyle Gellis is one of my favorite blenders. I'm also very fond of everything I've had from Tabacalera La Isla, I love a good small cigar, and I dig Mexican San Andrés wrappers. But even with all that this is something very special. You owe it to yourself, if you love cigars as much as I do, to at least try this one!
