The name 'Cohiba' derives from the word for tobacco used by the indigenous people of Hispaniola during Christopher Columbus' second visit to the New World. This medium-bodied smoke has a Cameroon wrapper on top of an Indonesian binder containing premium Dominican filler, and features immaculate construction worthy of the respect it receives. Cameroon wrappers are grown in the East part of the country. The growing area spreads over the eastern border, into the Central African Republic. Wrappers are air grown, without fertilizers and pesticides, by small farmers. The average plantation size is about one acre. The seed is originally from Sumatra, introduced in the country just after WWII.

The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together. 
Tobacco is grown in many islands of the Archipelago but, as far as cigars are concerned, Sumatra and Java are the ones. Sumatra Wrappers are worldwide known. Central Java (Vorstenland) and East Java (Besuki) give fillers and wrappers in abundance. Indonesia is a key country for cigar tobacco.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.
