Toscanello cigars were created by accident after World War II when there was a surplus of Toscano cigars. The manufacturer decided to cut the cigars in half to make them more affordable and easier to sell. The new format was an instant hit in Italy where it became fashionable to smoke one with friend, earning the Toscanello the nickname of "the friendship cigar".

The standard Short Panatela is 5*38 but can range from 4 to 5 3/8 inches by 35-39 ring gauge.
