There’s an old saying that goes “Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me.” But I’m no fool, and I know a good, affordable cigar when I see one. Besides, I have always been a sucker for a well-made perfecto. So! For a second time, I smoked a cigar from the Diesel Fool’s Errand line: the Simple Fool. A soothing tobacco sweetness came off the foot and body of this expertly crafted cigar, which wore a rustic yet stunning Ecuadorian Sumatra-seed maduro wrapper packed with fine Nicaraguan Habano leaves. The construction was a bit too firm for my tastes, but the draw was effortless. For the first half, I picked up nothing but tobacco sweetness, which is fine by me since tobacco aroma is what I love about cigars. The retro-hale was a tad peppery. The finish was long and tingly. There was not much change in the cigar’s profile during the second half, but there is nothing wrong with a cigar that lacks complexity as long as it satisfies you. The ash was salt and peppery, and the smoke output was wispy. The burn was sharp. As for strength, it fell between medium and strong, so I suggest you smoke it after a meal. As for paring, coffee black or light and sweet. I recommend this Simple Fool for the wise aficionado who is looking for a well-made, good-looking cigar that pleases the palate and is easy on the wallet.
