Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve Barrel Fermented Toro 6 * 52, Box of 10

Pappy Van Winkel Barrel Aged uses dual Mexican San Andrés and “tapa negra” wrappers over a blend of fire-cured Kentucky and Nicaraguan tobaccos. The Pappy Van Winkle Barrel Fermented cigar is a 100% long-filler, premium cigar made totally by hand in very small batches at Drew Estate in Estelí, Nicaragua. This historic cigar features a “barrel fermented” “tapa negra”-style wrapper over a Mexican San Andres base wrapper, as well as aged Nicaraguan Filler tobaccos, personally selected by me. It is the perfect choice for pairing with any of the Van Winkle bourbon and rye products.

Most cigars are manufactured in the Caribbean and Central America.
Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

Mexican San Andres Maduro
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Mexican tobacco is very dark and the best leaves can be used as maduro wrappers. San Andres Maduro is a thick, medium bodied dark leaf, also called San Andres Morron. Like Connecticut Broadleaf, San Andres Maduro is stalk cut and used for binder and wrapper.
USA Kentucky
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Known for its elasticity and small veins, Kentucky tobacco is highly sought after for its consistency and resilience, as well as its robust taste and pungent aroma. Usually rough in texture, the majority of Kentucky tobacco is fire-cured to add a smoky, mesquite flavor.

Nicaragua
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.

I don't get the hype on this cigar. It started off so promising with an initial burst of flavors of cinnamon and spice that then transitioned to creamy/woodsy notes...the cigar then got super boring. The middle of this cigar tastes like a $5 average cigar. The construction was fine and draw was good...the burn was a little uneven but not bad. Kept waiting for those good flavors to come back and it got a little bit better in the final third but nothing above average. Glad I bought a single...will not be purchasing any more.

The Family Reserve whole not my preferred profile of a cigar is very good for what it us. If you’re one that like that smoky charcoal flavor…you’ll love it. Construction is typical DE, but the burn was very slow and methodical making for a very long smoke.
