In a Piezo ignition system, ignition occurs when a crystal of PZT (or quartz crystal) is struck by a spring-loaded hammer. The force creates a spark which travels along a wire to where the spark should come out to ignite the gas.

Some lighters come with a built-in cutter for added convenience. The most common ones have a punch cutter located at the bottom of the lighter next to the refillable valve. Others come with a guillotine style cutter.

Fuel level windows are convenient to see how much butane is left in the lighter's chamber.
