Since 2014, Crowned Heads has crafted an annual release cigar that is a celebration of life and remembrance of friends and family members that have passed on. The Las Calaveras Edicion Limitada 2022 is no exception. And it marks the first time this must-have, limited edition cigar is released as a Nicaraguan puro with a savory Corojo ‘99 wrapper. The cigars are handmade in Nicaragua by My Father Cigars. In addition, the cigar’s band features four coins that bear the initials of four people who have died the previous year. The initials change with each release.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Nicaraguan Corojo
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Nicaraguan Corojo '99 tobacco originated as a wrapper leaf in 1999 in Cuba. The seeds of the original Corojo '99 seed were planted in Ecuador, and these in turn were transplanted to Nicaragua. The leaf is appreciated for its excellent wrapper qualities and spiciness.

The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

The "Garcia Family Industrial Park" located in Esteli, Nicaragua is a seven-acre complex with 9 buildings, over 1900 employees, where the Garcias supervise their cigar production from the tobacco field to the roller's table. Their Miami headquarters house 12 rollers that make all of the company's "handmade in Miami" brands.

The Las Calaveras line is an annual release from Crowned Heads. The skull on the band is inspired by Dias de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead), a Mexican holiday meant to honor those who have passed. The 2022 version is the first of the line to be a Nicaraguan puro. It is composed of a Nicaraguan Corojo 99 wrapper and Nicaraguan binder and fillers. As expected from the corojo wrapper the initial light brought a modest, not at all overpowering, spice that quickly turned to an easy and enjoyable cinnamon. Primary tasting notes throughout the smoke duration include leather, hay, a light earthiness, and the previously mentioned cinnamon. As I progressed into the second and final thirds I discovered coffee coming through more and more, especially on the retrohale. A word to the wise, this cigar had a fairly open draw, it wanted to burn and I was having such a good time with it I had to resist the temptation to smoke it too aggressively. Starting off at a true medium, the Las Calaveras 2022 LC52 crossed the finish line just a slight step above a medium. This cigar is for all but your mildest smokers, if a Corojo wrapped Nicaraguan puro is your thing, or you haven't tried this make before I would encourage you to try this one as it's flavor profile will have a broad appeal compared to many bolder Nicaraguan Corojo offerings. Total burn time was about 40 minutes and I had absolutely no construction problems. I don't know if it was the theme of the cigar (honoring the departed), the holiday spirit carried by Christmas jazz, or getting to work early with my favorite cafe con leche, but this cigar was an awesome ride for me and helped me find a little Zen in this crazy world. We're all lucky to enjoy such fine things as cigars and loved ones. Happy Holidays everyone!

This cigar isn’t great — it’s INCREDIBLE. I was drawn in within minutes of smoking it. Being limited edition I definitely need to get more of this stick - a fusion of coffee, cream and baking spices to give you an excellent smoke

I really enjoy many CH blends, but this one is just not my jam. Its better than last years, but im not really that fond of the flavors. Specially for a limited edition cigar. Improves a lot from second third on though.
