The original Perla Del Mar was a highly acclaimed fan-favorite, and now JC Newman has followed it with a darker, bolder version - the Perla Del Mar Maduro. Using a beautiful Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper on top of Nicaraguan binder and filler, this box-pressed gem chooses to remain in the medium-bodied territory instead of venturing into stronger waters like many of its colleagues utilizing similar components. Although the strength is subdued, the flavor is certainly not. Expect rich notes of chocolate, molasses, coffee and cream throughout this exceptional value smoke.

Most cigars are manufactured in the Caribbean and Central America.
Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

USA Connecticut Broadleaf
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Connecticut Broadleaf is grown in the United States' Connecticut Valley and is prized for its dark, oily, full flavored and aromatic characteristics. The plants are grown in full sun giving this cigar wrapper its characteristic sweetness. The Connecticut Broadleaf plant leaves are mainly processed as maduro tobacco. Today, Connecticut Broadleaf seeds are being grown in other countries besides the United States.
Binder
Nicaragua
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.

I picked this up at the New store in Delray Beach. Great flavors for a 60, excellent construction, solid core maduro flavors, coffee, cocoa, some cedar, light on pepper. This is a well balanced, smooth, straight forward, not too complex and few transitions. The aged tobacco tastes more expensive than it costs. A winner!

I usually smoke the corojo PDM but i wanted to try the Maduro. I found it to be excelente with slightly more spice and earthiness. Everything was great until I attempted to remove the band. Removing the band also ripped the wrapper completely off, apparently due to to much glue. This I’m sure is just one of those things the happen every once in a while. It’s a good cigar I’ll have to try again!

This new iteration of the Perla del Mar was at first very disappointing. The prior cigar was a masterpiece box press, nearly square, with a beautiful burn, draw and taste. Even the ring was a wonderful piece of art. This new version is now an "oval" box press that really seems like less of a cigar. They still smoke very well, and the flavor is very satisfying. I often wonder why someone takes a superior product and "upgrades' it to being less than it was before. I suspect money, and the amount of tobacco has something to do with it. I yearn for that perfect square box press, and hope we'll see it again some day.

Excellent stick, burn was razor sharp and even when it looked like it was going to need a burn touch up, it corrected itself, smoked three out of the 5 pack so far, all were top notch as far as flavor, burn, smoke production and draw. Definitely ordering another 5 pack and then a box, they are that good.

Bold flavor, this square box press cigar is favorably priced. I had a little difficulty on the burn, having to touch it up at the beginning from caving, but once it settled in, the ash was uniform and it performed admirably, with a slow, steady burn. It's very similar in taste, construction and price to the New World Gobernador, one of my faves. So, I'm happy to find this one as a similar alternative. I'd happily purchase it again.
