The Laranja Reserva Escuro is an extension of Espinosa Cigar’s already popular Laranja line. Only this time, Espinosa replaced the original orange-hued Brazilian wrapper with a very dark and sweet, Brazilian Mata Fina that shrouds a Nicaraguan binder, which is stuffed with long-filler tobaccos from Nicaragua. A full-strength, full-bodied stick, the Laranja Reserva Escuro has a flavor profile that consists of espresso, dark spices and hickory for a smoking experience designed to satisfy the flavor-starved aficionado. The Laranja Reserva Escuro is superbly hand crafted at AJ Fernandez’s famed Tabacalera Fernandez factory in Nicaragua.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

Brazilian Mata Fina
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Hailing from the Reconcavo Basin region of Bahia, Brazilian Mata Fina, or 'thin forest', is some of the more popular Brazilian tobacco used. This stalk-cut sun-grown leaf is dark, medium-bodied in strength, and contains a smooth, earthy profile perfect for maduro or oscuro wrappers.

The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

This gorgeous corona gorda has a beautiful espresso bean colored wrapper from Brazil. The pre-light aroma is rich, earthy, and the essence of dried fruit is present. The initial flavors include toasted wood, rich dark tobacco and a burst of red pepper. Then, unsweetened cocoa powder and smoky mesquite enters with some dried fig flavors. The cigar is extremely flavorful through its entirety. The smoke aroma is wonderful, the draw is perfect, and the burn is spot on with no touchups needed. The cigar has plenty of smoke production and the construction is basically perfect.

Excellent construction. intimidating BOLD rich maduro flavors: DARK espresso, cocoa, some earth, some sweetness, plus side of pepper yet smooth, creamy and medium plus strength. Upper limit in flavors for my taste, probably not a first choice for a novice smoker, but definitely worth trying.

All around really good stick. I would like to see a rating for "feel/touch" of wrapper. This one was a little like a really fine grained sand paper which was a bit odd. But overall fantastic stick for the value. Great box press, draw was a little tight, taste was leathery and peppery (at first) but that smoothed out towards the back half of the stick. 52 ring guage felt a bit small (is it really 52?) but other than that I really enjoyed this one. It was a good hour+ of a smoke. I will buy again and will look to age a few of these.

The Laranja Reserva Escuro Robusto Extra by Espinosa Cigars is a beautiful box-pressed cigar with a dark Mata Fina wrapper from Brazil, and a Nicaraguan binder and filler. It is superbly crafted at AJ Fernandez's famed Tabacalera Fernandez factory in Nicaragua. It was selected #1 Cigar of the Year by Cigar Snob Magazine in 2020. The wrapper is smooth in texture and has notes of earth and cedar. When I light this cigar, the first third opens up with some intense woody and nutty notes, and a little pepper. This is a cigar that smokes at a solid full level for strength, body and flavor. The second third delivers a lot of the same qualities that are present in the first third, and I am getting some cocoa and a touch of tanned leather. The final third delivers notes of dark chocolate and also a strong earthiness. The draw was perfect with a well-balanced burn and a beautiful solid light-gray ash. The Laranja Reserva Escuro Robusto Extra was a solid smoke. If you like a full-bodied smoke, then you need to try this stick.
