A decade ago, Jim Robinson, the Jim behind “Island Jim Cigars”, in collaboration with Oscar Valladares released the Leaf by Oscar cigar. It was supposed to be a house blend for Jim’s cigar shop. However, it became such a hit, that the Leaf by Oscar was eventually made available to everyone. The Leaf by Oscar 10th Anniversary Criollo commemorates this highly popular cigar’s first milestone anniversary. The cigar features a savory Criollo maduro wrapper covering a binder and filler made of top-shelf Honduran tobacco. Once rolled, each cigar is encased by an actual tobacco leaf instead of cellophane. While the cigar’s “leafy” packaging made an eye-catching sensation when it was first released, its great construction, delicious flavors, and wallet-pleasing price made it an enduring hit. The cigars are handmade in Honduras at Oscar Valladares’ factory.

Most cigars are manufactured in the Caribbean and Central America.
Honduras, a Central American country which shares a border with Nicaragua, is widely known in the premium cigar industry as the ideal place to grow Cuban and Connecticut seed tobaccos. Danli and the Jamastran Valley is considered the heart of Honduras’ cigar industry. The Jamastran Valley is known for producing a full-bodied tobacco that draws strong comparisons to the tobacco grown in the Pinar del Rio region of Cuba. This same region is also known for its Connecticut shade grown and Corojo shade grown tobacco. In addition, Honduras produces Cuban-seed sun grown filler tobaccos of the highest quality.

Honduran cigar wrapper has the reputation of great quality, with wrapper leaf being grown in the Jamastran, Talanga and San Agustin valleys. Some of the wrappers being grown in Honduras include Corojo, Honduran Claro, Honduran Criollo, Honduran Jamastran Viso Rosado, Honduran San Agustin Havana Seed and San Agustin Ligero.

Criollo tobacco was originally developed for filler, but was found to be tasty as a wrapper when shade-grown. Criollo means "native" in Spanish. What a good cigar. The leaf to wrap the cigar smells so sweet you could swear it has been infused with something but NO, it is really full natural and delicious.

Much better than the others of the leaf line by Oscar. Aroma: creamy chocolate and spices Virgin draw: creamy, dense nuts and dark raisins First third: Dark raisins, bread, cream, mild pepper and spices with leather peaking through every now and then. Halfway: raisins are dominant with pepper and spices while the bread takes a seat way back. Leather peaks through a little more but not over bearing. Dark raisins, Maduro earth and spices are the main player. The aroma is dense and delicious. Last: a lot of spices, cinnamon and pepper. Still delicious and cream coming back. Powerful cigar. Smoke slow and enjoy. Pairs well with a cappuccino, mission dark rum or pumpkin flavored dessert.

All of the Leaf cigars are great, the Anniversary edition is my favorite. I think it is the criollo wrapper.

Quality cigar.. I think I enjoyed the Sumatra wrapper more but I would definitely try again. Perhaps more time in the humidor. The draw was tight and I had to correct it twice.
