Great care goes into crafting Southern Draw’s Firethorn. From its excellent construction to its perfect draw and even ash, the Firethorn is a near flawless example of what a great cigar should be. Handmade in Nicaragua by AJ Fernandez’s Tabacalera Fernandez factory, the Firethorn is a medium-strength cigar that features an Ecuadorian Habano double-fermented wrapper, a Mexican binder, and a Nicaraguan filler. Medium-bodied, the Southern Draw Firethorn offers an enticing combination of flavors that includes cinnamon, cocoa, and caramel.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Ecuadorian Habano wrapper has become one of the most used cigar wrappers in the market. Grown primarily by the Oliva family, this tobacco originated from Habano or H2000 seeds brought to Ecuador from Cuba. This leaf is rich and flavorful thanks to the temperate climate of Ecuador and the quality of its volcanic soil.

Mexico
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Mexican tobacco is primarily grown in the San Andres region due to its volcanic soil. It has a very distinctive flavor with a spicy and earthy profile. As a binder it adds to the cigar’s overall flavor.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.

I was excited to gift this a shot. My other experiences with Southern Draw have been good. The FireThorn continues that experience. Initial draws are of pepper but eventually levels off into a nice blended stick. Burn is even and the draw is smooth.

This was a surprise and then I went to find it and it took a minute. First of all is not a pepper taste, it is a different flavor. So I say and thought it over and it's a more of a cinnamon-y without tasting like candy. It's different. I have 1 left and I am sitting on it till I can get another couple. I did push my Perfect Draw through it so I took a star away. A very pleasant surprise.

Pepper overwhelms the flavor profile; it gave me the impression the cigar was burning hotter than it should. Despite the open draw, I had to retouch the uneven burn several times. The only Southern Draw I really enjoyed was the Rose of Sharon (Dessert Rose), all the others were not muddled.

A very lovely stick, combining oak, caramel and a hint of spice. Construction is solid, with no cracking or unraveling, and the draw is perfect. My particular stick burned quite unevenly, however. Would pair well with a rare steak and pinot noir.

It started off as a real pepper bomb (which I’m not a fan of) but quickly settled down to a smooth balanced smoke. Notes of slightly sweet cocoa, long finish, nice oily mouth feel. Burn and draw were outstanding.
