The H. Upmann Hispaniola by Jose Mendez is a full-bodied stick that is hand crafted by master blender Jose Mendez in the Dominican Republic. It sports a reddish Ecuadorian Sumatra-seed wrapper that is placed over a Dominican Republic Olor binder and a Dominican filler. The H. Upmann Hispaniola by Jose Mendez delivers complex notes of cedar and nuts with hints of toast.

Most cigars are manufactured in the Caribbean and Central America.
The Dominican Republic is the world's first producer of cigars. Most factories are located in Santiago, in the center of the island, and in close proximity to the tobacco fields grown in the fertile Cibao Valley. While tobacco and cigars have always traditionally been produced in the Dominican Republic, many Cuban cigar makers established in the Dominican Republic after the Cuban communist revolution, elevating the quality of Dominican cigars.

The H. Upmann Hispaniola by Jose Mendez Toro features a rustic, reddish Ecuadorian Sumatra-seed wrapper. Prior to lighting, this medium to full-strength cigar had a nice grassy and tobacco sweetness aroma to it. The construction was a little too firm for my tastes and the draw was a tad too tight, but neither affected the cigar’s performance. The first third started out as all natural tobacco sweetness with muted notes of spice. In the second third, the spice picked up, but the sweetness stayed in the forefront. The draw did loosen up at this point. This flavor profile didn’t change much in the final third, but the grassy notes did show through. The smoke was heavy, and the ash was dark throughout. Overall, this is a straight forward cigar with no hidden surprises but nonetheless it was enjoyable. I would pair it with a black coffee as a contrast to the cigar’s sweetness.

The cigar was a mess. Burn issues from the very start, and a very tight draw with poor smoke production. Unimpressive aroma; not a bad taste after the first third. But not great. Appearance of the wrapper was fine but the bands were unevenly applied and had some detritus on them. Not well done.

Great draw and burn. Beautiful wrapper. It has a gorgeous reddish color with no veins. Draw was perfect and burned very well. Good value.

H.upman has never been on my list but I decided to give this a try! Glad I did, this for me is the one and only upman, nice beginning spice followed by a combination of creamy nutty sweet leather. Nice burn and perfect draw. Definitely buying more!!

I experienced medium plus flavor and medium strength cigar. Core flavor of earth, precious wood (I got a hint of mahogany), sweet and a little nutty to start and the pepper going back and forth between white and cayenne but still on the medium side. complex smoke. not boring, transitions and a very affordable stick. Hard to go wrong with this no matter your preference. Finally a very "cubanesque" aroma and flavor profile. enjoy!

Upmann has come out with winner after winner lately. This along with the 175th Anniversary and AJ Fernandez are simply great. Chose this vitola for the unique shape. Cold draw has got some spice to it! The draw is excellent, almost effortless. Smoke itself is delicious and complex. Definitely getting some cedar and everything is very smooth. This is a fantastic new cigar that is going to keep me coming back for more! Definitely want to try the other sizes. Definitely worth trying, and putting in the cigar rotation.
