Flor de las Antillas Cigars

Brought to you in 2012 by the renowned Garcia family, Flor de Las Antillas is a Nicaraguan puro made at the My Father Cigars factory in Esteli. Named after Cuba, the largest of the Caribbean's Antilles island chain, this complex medium-bodied blend wasn't out very long before receiving numerous awards, including Cigar Aficionado's coveted #1 spot in the 2012 Top 25 Cigars of the Year list. Fast forward to present day and the Flor de Las Antillas has become so ubiquitous as an affordable premium cigar, it is no longer simply a recommended smoke - it's flat-out required.

The Flor de las Antillas name is a reference to Cuba, the largest island in the Caribbean's Antilles. This Nicaraguan puro is box pressed, with a very beautiful band that portrays artwork from the early 20th century. This delicious cigar has been selected as the #1 Cigar of the Year 2012 by Cigar Aficionado, for it is a complex, medium bodied stick that delights the palate with subtle spice and rich flavor. Flor de las Antillas is made in the My Father Cigars factory in Esteli, Nicaragua with a Sun Grown Nicaraguan wrapper.

Douglas French If your going to store this in a electric cooled humidor can you leave it in the box? should you remove them from the plastic packages in the box? and finally do I need to crack the box open frequently to let humidity into the box?

Packed with flavor, lot of creamy and fragrant smoke, didn't seem that strong at first but it only hit me after I stood up how full bodied this cigar is. I paired it with Calvados which didn't do it justice, I don't drink whiskey but I'd say heavier smoky one would go with it really well, I have two more in the humidor, will pair with a bold Armagnac next time. Burn is quite a bit uneven as I have noticed tends to be the case with maduros, other than this is a top notch stick, flavors of vanilla, raisins, lot of cedar/sandalwood and very pleasant notes of leather and pepper.

Ordered a box that I'm almost at the end of right now and planning on ordering another. There is a nuttiness and creaminess throughout that really comes out in the final third, along with notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. I think I bought these because the were the highest rated I could find at a reasonable price. As a newbie to the world of cigars I tend to rely upon ratings and recommendations. After toasting the foot lit nice and even and the first things I noticed was the nice but mild aroma. The draw was light and even throughout the cigar with plenty of smoke generated. The cigar burnt nice and even with no issues whatsoever. This is a medium cigar but I would put it into the mild/medium category. One of my favourites to date.

this is a beautiful cigar! a soft box press, seamless suede wrapper adorned with a classy and artistic band, and satin burgundy footband, instant 5 stars! vcut the belicoso tip and was pleasantly surprised by the dry draw. effortless pull and subtle spice. light-up was a breeze and the first third was heavy handed baking spices that lingered long after the finish. smoke volume produced clouds. the flavor profile was copious cinnamon, black peppercorns, and cardamom pods. the ash was circular despite the box press, but thankfully kept a nice tight stack with minor touchups to tame a runner. at the halfway mark, the draw has won me over, steady 5 stars! this is quite a spicy stick, and the flavor profile morphed and brought out some clove as well as allspice. I could see this being a solid fall or holiday stick to accompany some baked goods. at first ashing I noticed some slight tunneling, and a wavy burn line that required some more taming, which bumped the score again. the retrohale was a roasted coffee and white pepper. in the final third a touch of floral made it's debut in the blend. I started to detect rosewater. the pepper calmed down and was very bready to finish things out. overall, this is a tasty stick, and I can see why it gets high marks. I will say I was quite surprised at how quickly it smoked, despite taking my time with it. the open draw could be a contributing factor, as the final time was a swift 50 minutes, and the final third was the slowest part. will revisit for a holiday stick!

Solid stick. I was smoking with some Cuban cigar 'experts' who weren't particularly fond of the taste. In my opinion, this was a well constructed cigar with a rather tight roll. The smoke was light with a straight burn line from begining to end. The taste was predominantly cedar, slight peppery spices, wrapped around baking spices topped with a sprinkle of honey. For people who like the Cuban 'hay bale' flavor' this isn't your stick but it certainly has flavor notes for anyone from beginner to veteran.

Bang, it's a homerun. The Flor De Las Antillas 10th Anniversary is a medium bodied power packed phenomenon that delivers on all counts. Wonderful spiced flavor profile and excellent construction and burn. Although a little pricey at $40.00, it's definitely worth it to enjoy on a special occasion.

Very nice cigar. It does several things very well. Classic Nicaraguan flavors of baking spice, leather, almonds, and chocolate. Lost some complexity at the and had a tighter draw than I prefer but burn line was razor sharp the whole time. Didn’t have some of the uniqueness that some more recent boutique cigars have but if you enjoy this type of flavor profile you will definitely enjoy this.

They've spent various number of months in my humi (65% RH). But all of them had the same problems: very poor burn, tasteless, and on half of them the wrapper split. They are now in my "never again" list.

On first impressions this is a beautiful stick and the initial smell is lovely. You can tell it will be flavourful. Lit up nicely but I’d prefer a tighter draw. The stick is so very flavourful but I found that the white pepper elements dominated the first third before settling down for the stick to balance out. Burned evenly, I never had to touch it up and I really enjoyed the flavours once I got past the pepper hit. I’ll probably get 5 more but will use it as an occasion stick I share around rather than a regular indulgence.

The only right way to start the new brand new year? Smoking an extraordinary cigar, and the Flor De Las Antillas Maduro Torpedo is just that. This Cigar shows its elegance with its Ecuadorian Habano wrapper that makes all dark chocolate lovers like myself mouths water. Removing it from the cellophane gives an instant aroma of fruitiness. The cold draw is a fantastic mixture of cocoa and earthiness, and after lighting it up the first few puffs are just the same with a taste of berries joining the mix and just the right amount of spice. The draw and burn are just perfect from the start with no issues occurring at all; the cigar also gives a wonderful hint of coffee right at the start of the second third and is then followed up by more cocoa and fruitiness which are perfectly balanced for my tasting. All the way from the Final Third to the nub the cigar was perfectly balanced with spice, fruitiness, and cocoa as well as some leather. I would say it was the perfect combination all throughout. This stick is a medium-full bodied cigar and I would definitely pair it with a nice Rum, but it is without a doubt one of the best cigars for its price!

Is there such a thing as a bad My Father? I don't think so. This was the perfect smoke for a cool Autumn day. It had the aroma and flavor of a warm loaf of pumpkin bread. Nutty, with hints of baking spices, and an excellent blend of medium savoriness and mild sweetness. An easy draw, plenty of thick smoke. Even the wrapper and label were reminiscent of fall colors. Just a damn fine cigar.

This cigar, like the Toro 6x52, is a fine cigar. In truth, I can't tell the difference when it comes to taste, and that's probably the way it's suppose to be. The only issue with it is getting the perfect cut, I find that I'm either too small, or too large, and while I'm sure I'd get it after a few cuts, it is frustrating at times. Other than that tiny issue, I highly recommend this one. If you've not tried it, you're missing out.

This is a fine, medium cigar. While I'm not much for describing hints of this, or that in a cigars flavor, I can tell you that I do get bits of spice and chocolate from this one. I had my first one last summer, a gift from a friend, so I decided to order a box for the humidor. Won't be the last one either. Reasonably affordable, and smokes very well.

Very easy draw. Good construction. Everyone raves about this cigar, but I don't get any standout taste with the cigar. I was looking forward to tasting the nutmeg, but I don't even get the pepper or the spicy notes. Perhaps my pallet needs a bit more training to pick up those notes. What I did like was that it is a slow burning cigar. That, coupled with the wrapper, makes for a "show off-y" kind cigar to smoke at a party. I'll try it again sometime next year.

The first draw has a slight zing to it. Notes of tobacco and not much else. Moving into the first third smoke is milder with the zing intensifies throughout the finish. Notes of cedar coming off the foot. Great smoke output. A bit of an uneven burn, but that could be because I’m taking my sweet time smoking it. Still hasn’t gone out though, still burning whenever I pick it up. I thought that the zing was all but gone but going into the second third it’s back, lingering on the finish. Into the final third the strength seems to be kicking up a bit. Medium to full body but the zing subsided. This has been an enjoyable smoke. Great construction. Going to have to try the maduro to see if it has more of the flavour notes that I like.

I will say up front that I think the CA rating is a bit high for my personal experience, but this is still a superb cigar. Decent amount of spicy flavors, zero bitterness. Really an excellent example of a Nicaraguan Puro. I personally enjoyed the second half to the nub more than the first half. Not overwhelming at all, super mild nicotine, and lots of smoke with a great aroma. I think this one will be better off with some age for sure, so I am glad I have more on hand to sit and try later. For the price, you won't be disappointed, and if you are looking to get someone else into premium cigars, this is a great first stick to open someone to the larger world of cigars and the interesting flavors to be had!

Great for the price but I don't quite get the COTY accolades. Fairly mild up front. Woody, cedary type flavors with some spice and pepper kick. Second third ramps up the spice and pepper without going insane. The real interesting part is the final third. The cigar just wasn't overly flavorful until the final third. Nice spice notes, slight woodiness, etc. Retrohales were unusually harsh for how smooth the cigar was otherwise. Like I said, great for the money, but not tasting the cigar of the year award.

Writing a review after smoking the 2nd one I bought, after some humidor time. I don't get the hype. Tasted thin and a bit harsh (esp final 1/3), especially compared to sticks like the Mi Querida Ancho Largo or even Flathead V19 that only cost $2-$4 more. I think the rating and 5-star reviews here may have skewed me to expect too much. This is a beatiful stick, dark chocolate-brown wrapper with minor veins, solid construction. Cold draw was promising with hints of baker's chocolate, and the stick itself smelled like a block of dark cocoa. But the flavor was very "meh" ou decidedly average, and it got a bit hot in the final 1/3. Maybe I shouldn't expect the level of refinement of a Plasencia Alma Fuerte or a Padron 1926/1964 maduro, fair enough, but the flavor to me fell short of say an Oliva Serie O mauduro. I have a second one in the humidor to see how some time may change it (wish Neptune let you edit reviews). But on this first attempt, I was sort of disappointed vs the glowing reviews. Even the Joya Gran Reserva I had recently or the Joya Silver smoked better to me at similar price points. YMMV.

Beautiful cigar.. Excellent construction, smoke flow perfect and plentiful. Rather bitter for the first 2 inches, longer than the normal light-up phase of the smoke. Past this, mellowed out to a smooth smoke. Similar to Bellas Artes Maduro but not an equal. Cigar is slow burning and enjoyable... second half. I initially light in no-wind stillness but mine needed correction to counter uneven burn. It is a good cigar and priced right. I would say 89-91 quality as opposed to 96. Almost bold and full flavored.. not a bad cigar! I'd re-buy!

I can not say enough about this awesome cigar! I am a nightly smoker and I only smoke really good cigars and I like the larger ring gauges and this cigar is now my go to! It is excellent in every way. My previous favorite was an Oliva V in 6x60 but Oliva has priced their cigars way out of market value in the last year and that is how I discovered this gem of a cigar that is better than the Oliva V in every single aspect! This is a great stick for the price, and frankly it's not that little in size. The first 1/2+ is smooth with that Pepin kick / pepper. Slow burn too, quite long lasting. The issues come in the final 1/3 like most of the Peppin cigars I've tried, where the spice amps up to harsh (for me) levels. That is, they're never really nub-able. If you commit to enjoying half+ of this, given the price, it's a good deal. I might still spring for the My Father Toro, which though it has the same last 1/3 issues (for me) is a bit smoother/richer thru the first half. This is gorgeous, though. Rustic with a veiny coffee-and-milk colored wrapper.

I smoked one of these today that's probably been in my humidor for over 18 months. It's a wonderfully consistent stick, lots of cafe-com-leche flavor, slightly woody, and best of all it didn't amp up crazily in the final 1/3. My go-to My Father stick lately has been the La Opulencia Toro...by comparison, that stick is much more flavorful and smooth through about the first half, but by the last 1/3 devolves into something of a harsh, hot mess. So you pay for a Toro but IMHO get a Robusto's worth of goodness from it, which is OK. Here, the flavors held the whole time, which is a great outcome. I think what dings it for me is it just didn't have that flavor or umami hook to put it over the top in my list. But definitely worth a try for a straight-up flavorful Nicaraguan stick at a reasonable price.

A pleasurable cigar throughout. Medium to full bodied, never harsh, very well made, great draw and burn. Tasting notes were prevalent throughout each third, intensifying with each new third, cardamom, fig, pithy citrus, cinnamon and baking spice, dark chocolate, dried apple, a bit of wet asphalt, full cedar, peat, and wet leather. Wonderful throughout, didn’t want it to end.

This stick is amazing. It received a 96 rating for a reason! Started off with a nice bite but immediately became so smooth and pleasant I could smoke this stick all day long . I absolutely love this stick and the price cannot be beat! Perfect burn line all the way down to the nub. I’m not a true aficionado just yet so I can not describe the specific distinct flavors but all I can say is you will not be disappointed. I bought a few sticks to try out but after this first stick I am buying a box and this will always be stocked in my humidor.

This was an enjoyable cigar. Burn time was 1 hour and a half (Toro) and I still had about an inch left. This cigar has so many transitions it's very hard to get to the end without finding "something" to like in there ... medium- full in body and strength draw was average great construction bla bla bla ... just smoke one.

I loved this cigar. Up to this point my experience with My Father cigars was with their higher price point offerings, so despite the “96 point” rating, I will admit that the sub $7 price somewhat lowered my expectations. I was delighted to find that this was an utterly wonderful smoke, and I would probably rank it as one of the more enjoyable smoking experiences I’ve had. The aroma and flavor were wonderful throughout, and the experience intensified beyond the first and second third without much change in character. The burn was somewhat uneven, in contrast to other My Father offerings. This is a minor issue given the excellent value and the fact that the overall experience was so overwhelmingly satisfying. Outstanding flavor, peppery with a wonderful aroma, and easy draw with lots of smoke. In summary, I believe the hype- this may very well become my “go to” cigar. Total smoke time approached an hour and a half, every minute of which was blissful.

I had one of these and it was excellent. Mild to medium as the stick develops. Good sweet nutty flavors with a lighter aromatic smoke. However I tried 3 more and each were all lack luster in comparison with one that had heavy amonia. If I could get the sticks to be consistent this would be a sure winner but 1 out of 4 is bad.

This cigar arrived in perfect condition from Neptune. Wonderful initial aromas of chocolate and slight earthiness build the anticipation. Upon lighting the flavor is excellent - mild pepper and light woody-sweetness. This sungrown wrapper is medium brown, moderately veined, barely toothy, and quite delicious. The flavors grow to include small gifts which hint of licorice, nutmeg and leather, all rounded and expansive. The easy draw delivers plentiful smoke, with a random-walk burn line surrounding the stacked dark gray long ash. Its layered light pepper floats broadly above the palate, moderate yet nicely full-flavored. Zero touchups needed in all of its 75 minutes. This Flor de las Antillas Toro 6x52 has a superior draw, level burn, plentiful smoke and rounded flavors which linger a welcome, long time.

To say I was excited when I heard of the release of the Maduro would be a huge understatement. On the initial light, I can taste the similarities to the original, similar earthy tones and light pepper. Different to the original, was the increase in strength. The cigar started with a tight draw and opened up very nicely after about 20 minutes. The cigar strength increased from medium to medium-full body with a very pleasant mix of woody and earthy tones. The pepper increased a bit on the exhale, still very pleasant on the tongue. The flavor stayed consistent till the nub with an excellent burn from beginning to end and a very nice tight marble ash. Purchased this as a single and enjoyed it thoroughly. Definitely box purchase worthy at a great price. Beautiful cigar and band. Very firm box press with little to no give. The wrapper smells of sweet tobacco and cedar. This got a large v cut and although I was concerned it may be tight, it had a very open draw. I love wide open draws and taking long slow pulls. The first 1/2 inch of this cigar was very harsh and I considered walking away from it and then it opened up to a smooth sweet cedar with sharp red pepper on the nose. I'm glad I did not give up on this stick as I absolutely loved smoking it. I will order more in the future and let them rest up. I smoked this one about 3 weeks after delivery.

First, thank you Neptune for allowing us to buy singles. It lets us try and compare the highest rated sticks from the past several years without buying 5 packs. My pre light on this somewhat legendary stick was outstanding. I was reminded of a trip to the walk in humidor of an individual with exceptional taste and budget to match.. richness and complexity foreshadowed. This cigar has one of the best burns and ash that I can recall. there is plenty of smoke that imparts lighter to medium spice complexity that runs the full gamut. Sublime is the adjective one other reviewer applied and I would concur. I found the feel in the hand not entirely top shelf and that is my only serious detraction. As any aficionado knows each vintage will give the end user different impressions and undoubtedly the Flor de las Antillas Toro 2016 version is no exception. All in all, this is a wonderful cigar not just in presentation but in smell, flavor, volume of smoke, it is sublime. This is how a Nicaraguan cigar should taste in my opinion, with those great pepper flavors starting out with the first torch of the stick. However, it mellows greatly into a nice creamy smoke with some cinnamon type notes in the smoke that keeps you hooked all the way through. Incredibly even burn all the way, no relights required with a light/smooth even feeling draw to the smoke. Definitely a box I will be keeping in the humidor/collection when Padron's just aren't calling you that evening.

Decent cigar? Yes. Was it a 96? No way. Good cigar for the price? Meh... probably not. Having said that... I will often savor the smell of a cigar for several minutes before I actually toast it and cut it. This one had a rich and pungent tobacco aroma that was as beautiful as the cigar band that was wrapped around it. After the toast, it came alive with flavor, exuding earthy overtones of chamomile and alfalfa that were notably smooth. Into the second third, however, those exciting initial flavors took on a slight harshness and turned a little musty with a very slight bitterness (a bit of a letdown, given the high expectations). On a positive note, the smoke was cool and plentiful, and the draw was absolutely perfect. On the other hand, the burn was wobbly and required a couple of touchups to keep it from canoeing up the side. Overall: This cigar really has me wondering if I just happened to get a bad one, since my experience seems to have been vastly different from EVERY other review that I've read. I'm gonna give this one the benefit of the doubt and if the next one is any better, I'll let ya know.

A very good cigar which gives an excellent value for the money. Very tasty, creamy and intensely nutty (hazelnut), with roasted and smoked flavors which are followed by a hint of spice, mainly cinnamon, sweet and slightly peppery. The spicy sensation increases during the smoke, without ever being overwhelming, and the initial and slight bitterness disappears completely, leaving a final and intense impression of cedar, leather, citrics and cinnamon. The aftertaste is pure hazelnut, long and persistent. Its aroma follows quite clearly the same course as its flavor, but it is not as intense. A good choice as an after lunch cigar, especially if it is accompanied by a strong, not too acidic and aromatic coffee.
