The Altar Q cigar by Oscar Valladares pays tribute to Honduras’ rich Mayan culture. Located in Western Honduras, the Altar Q is considered the most important monument in Copán, a famed archaeological site, and an area known for its fine tobacco. The monument was built by Yax Pac a Mayan ruler in 775 AD, and depicts Copán’s 16 rulers. Fascinated by his Honduran roots, and Mayan culture, Oscar Valladares created the Altar Q as an homage to his heritage. A medium-strength cigar, the Alta Q by Oscar Valladares features an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper with a binder and filler grown in the Copán region. Honduras, a Central American country which shares a border with Nicaragua, is widely known in the premium cigar industry as the ideal place to grow Cuban and Connecticut seed tobaccos. Danli and the Jamastran Valley is considered the heart of Honduras’ cigar industry. The Jamastran Valley is known for producing a full-bodied tobacco that draws strong comparisons to the tobacco grown in the Pinar del Rio region of Cuba. This same region is also known for its Connecticut shade grown and Corojo shade grown tobacco. In addition, Honduras produces Cuban-seed sun grown filler tobaccos of the highest quality.

The Sumatra cigar wrapper is a dark leaf from the "black tobacco" sub-species family. It was first planted in the western Indonesian island of Sumatra by a Dutch explorer in the 1500s. Sumatra-seed tobacco is being cultivated in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Ecuador, and Nicaragua.

Jeff Why does the description say Nicaraguan binder and filler but the specifications state Honduran? And which is correct?

A well made stick that ages very well. I bought a box based on reviews and decided to let them rest. I suggest letting them sit for three to six months. Then smoke one a month just to watch it transform over time. At three months they are full of energy with flavors going everywhere. At nine months they start maturing in to a more complex accord. At a year they become something greater than the original parts.

The Altar Q has a very impressive look. The packaging and labeling are very well done and they tell a story. One about Mayan kings and rulers, about divinity and ancient monuments so fascinating and interesting as the cigar itself. An oily Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper gives cover to Honduran binder and fillers. Very attractive, silky to the touch with some small veins and a small pigtail on the cap. The aroma is a pleasant combination of citrus, subtle leather, hay and some pepper. Starting out, the Oscar Valladares Altar Q is so creamy and have this sweetness mixed with some woody notes, citric flavors, and white pepper giving the final touch to this array of flavors making one palate to rejoice, In the second third of the Altar Q, the creaminess note actually gets stronger, I would say that in this level flavors are more plants oriented. I can taste more cedar and more tobacco notes with hints of salt and some spice. At this point the cigar is a solid medium-plus. strength continues to increase during the final third of the stick, the creamy cedar still there along with the white pepper and the same spice since the beginning. The cigar has become very nutty, the citric notes have receded and its more leathery now. I got a lot of smoke since the beginning, a beautiful even burning line and an excellent draw. Construction wise the cigar is perfect. I could easily smoke this cigar every single day, it is so easy to enjoy, so creamy and satisfying, It has become for me one of those cigars you smoke when you are looking for comfort, when you don’t want any surprise and you are sure at the end you will be happy with the selection you have made.

It's difficult to say anything negative about this cigar. The burn and draw was perfect. The flavors were smooth, with lovely hints of cedar wood, cinnamon, sweet earthiness and a mild roasted coffee. Paired exceptionally well with hazelnut chocolate and Peet's house blend (dark roasted coffee). This cigar is a luxury, and definitely on par with all my other luxury cigars like Plasencia, Padrons, Don Pepin Garcia and Fuente.
