La Palina Nicaragua Oscuro is one of two cigars the company makes in the Nicaraguan factory of AJ Fernandez Cigars, located in Esteli. This is the first collaboration between AJ Fernandez, a renowned master blender, and Bill Paley of La Palina cigars, but this is a partnership bonded by true passion for tobacco. The cigar was blended with a dark Ecuadorean wrapper and Nicaraguan binder and filler. La Palina Nicaragua Oscuro offers fans a new flavor that is rich and spicy, while keeping its commitment to great quality and craftsmanship.

Most cigars are manufactured in the Caribbean and Central America.
Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Ecuador is the perfect place to grow wrappers, because it is located on the Equator! And it has rich soils too. The weather conditions, with a nearly permanent cloudy sky, provide a natural shade, protecting the wrapper plants from sunshine and allowing the tobacco to grow thin and light. Ecuador supplies Connecticut and Sumatra type wrappers to many cigar factory in the world.

Nicaragua
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.

The first disappointment was when I opened the package. The box of cigars was being held together by the plastic wrapping. When I removed it and opened the cigar box. The box fell apart. I was like what the heck? The cigars appeared to be in good condition. A couple of days later. I tried one and it wouldn’t stay lit. I discarded it at the second third. The next day I had to try another. This time the cigar was as hard as a rock. I was not able to draw at all. I used a perfect draw tool on it. That didn’t work. I discarded it. So, at this point I am mad. The third one smoked a little better, still a tight draw. The cigar taste good but makes me say WTF. I will never buy these again.

I haven’t had many Oscuro wrappers but they always seem to be a flavorful adventure! I found the cigar to be well constructed with a leathery brown wrapper that out of the cellophane gave off aromas of smokey wet leather. Once lit and a few minutes into the burn, flavor notes of leather, cedar, oak and milk chocolate emerged. Some hints of vanilla and spice even made a surprise appearance.

Really enjoyable smoke with a lot of smoke output. Not as flavorful as the Black label but a great way to get into maduros without overpowering new smokers.

I'm obsessed with this stick and I just can't stop smoking it. This cigar is packed with flavor that is complex from the very beginning to the end. This is a nice looking cigar that immediately catches the eye, with a rough and oily medium brown wrapper that smells of dark cocoa and leather. Medium to full in strength with a combination of leather, cocoa, nuts, and cedar interacting and playing alongside ones palate and nose. Going from medium strength and picking up to end as a full bodied smoke. Perfect draw with a grey almost white ash. I must say the partnership between La Palina and AJ Fernandez smells like success.
