Handmade in Nicaragua with Mexican San Andres wrapper and Nicaraguan tobaccos, Murcielago cigars first appeared in 2009 and quickly became very popular. After a couple of years hiatus while Erik Espinosa, the brand owner, restructured his company and worked on establishing his own cigar factory in Nicaragua (La Zona), Espinosa Cigars announces that "the bat is back". Murcielago means bat in Spanish, and the cigar is named after the bats Erik encountered while visiting a cave in Mexico. The blend has been reverse engineered by Espinosa and relaunched in 2015.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Claro wrapper is light, yellowish brown in color.

Mexican
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Mexican tobacco is very dark and the best leaves can be used as maduro wrappers. In San Andres de Tuxtla (in the state of Vera Cruz), there is a very interesting production of Sumatra seed wrappers. Dark air cured tobaccos are produced in Mexico, mainly in Vera Cruz and Tampico provinces, on the East Coast along the Gulf. There is also some production in Yucatan. Mexico's volcanic soil yields tobacco that is spicy and earthy, with a very distinctive flavor.

Nicaragua
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.

The Murcielago Lancero is the perfect size for me. I was so excited to try these and was let down. They look good and have a good draw, but the burn is mostly uneven. Also it's not very sturdy. The outer wrapper is very thin and when I get to the final 1/3 it starts peeling or just falling apart. If you are like me and like to smoke the entire cigar, this is not a good choice. The taste starts out ok, but when you get to the final 1/3, again that's when the disappointment starts...very peppery and nothing like the start. If this was a cheaper cigar maybe it wouldn't be such an issue, because you know what you paid for. This just isn't a well constructed cigar. I was really hoping this would be a good cigar because I love a box pressed Lancero.

I was pleasantly surprised with this cigar. Nice appearance and near-perfect draw. Sweet underlying flavor once it got rolling with great smoke output throughout. Burn got a bit wonky at times and it had to be touched up a couple of times but nothing overly off putting. I would smoke this one again.

I have had the toro and robusto of the Murcielago several times, and I have to say this special TAA version has a lot going for it. It's very similar to the regular Murcielago, but with a stronger flavor of pepper spice and cinnamon. Almost like it's the same dish but made by someone else who added a pinch of more spices and sweetness. Very good! Espinosa is becoming one of my favorite brands next to AB, EPC, and LFD.

Had this bad boy for the first time last weekend. Appearance-wise this is one of the coolest looking cigars. It drew attention immediately from my friends and jump-started a hefty conversation (even before I lit it). The first draw was intimidating, it burned perfectly, but the taste was off. After giving it a few blows, I was blown away by the depth of flavors, the aroma, and the richness of the smoke. Overall I highly recommend this stick to intermediates who don't feel afraid of something a tad different.

excellent construction. very pleasant aroma pre light. dark bold flavors on an earthy background. pairs very well with bourbon. not not a strong cigar as far as nicotine kick but definitely would challenge the pallet of an inexperienced smoker. consistent from start to finish not very complex and does not have a lot of transitions. not my preferred flavor profile but I can see those who love boldness enjoy this very much.

The Murcielago Robusto BP is a beautiful dark black cigar made by Espinosa Cigars in collaboration with AJ Fernandez. “Murcielago” is the Spanish word for bat. The combination of a dark Mexican San Andres wrapper with a Nicaraguan binder and filler represents what a premium cigar should be. When I first saw this stick, its dark color made it look like a strong cigar, but the first draw quickly provided a mix of sweet spices, earth, and cocoa notes. I found this to be a solid medium cigar from start to finish. The burn line and burn path remained relatively straight, and the resulting ash was nearly white in color with some dark speckling. I found this cigar had excellent combustion as it maintained an ideal burn rate and burn temperature with an amazing draw. There was plenty to hold my interest in this cigar, and I found it cigar maintained an excellent flavor from start to finish. I would recommend it to an experienced cigar enthusiast. If you are looking for a cigar that emphasizes flavor over strength, Murcielago Robusto BP is going to be the cigar for you.

indeed i was seduced by the band. however, it does hold itself up. a sexy SA wrapper, pressed with solid heft in hand, the draw and aroma are tops. the burn can go wild if pursued too aggressively. it's taste (smoke) is rich, chewy, velvety & smooth. the retro yields a nice spicy finish that lasts. if you haven't tried this yet, i suggest you do. it will serve the dual purpose of a one off novelty for yourself (or as a gift); as well as a legitimate placeholder in your humidor.

A decent little stick that did not have any defining notes throughout the smoke. The tobacco flavor was solid and there were hints of some sweetness in the last third. It is what I would put in the “morning coffee” category. Only a few touch-ups required and the draw was good - just slightly on the tight side.
