Indeed, Ramón Cifuentes determined that he could begin producing his Partagas cigars again only after he had discovered, years after the Cuban embargo had begun, that the best wrapper leaves were being grown in Cameroon rather than in Cuba.

  Jaime Partagas created this brand in 1845. Cigar masters Ramn Cifuentes and Ramn Cifuentes, Jr. made Partagas the leading Cuban cigar. But in 1961, Ramn Cifuentes was forced to flee Cuba, never to return. Seventeen years later, he was finally able to begin creating his Partagas cigars again, this time in the Dominican Republic, where his unmatched tradition of cigar making remains alive and well.   Cameroon wrappers are grown in the East part of the country. The growing area spreads over the eastern border, into the Central African Republic. The seed is originally from Sumatra, introduced in the country just after WWII.
