San Lotano Oval Maduro is the same great tasting blend of the original San Lotano Oval line, slightly tweaked for fuller body and with a San Andres Maduro wrapper that is oily and great looking. This cigar is famous for its unique oval shape, an improvement on the traditional box pressed cigar. Made in Nicaragua by AJ Fernandez, one of the rising stars in the cigar industry, the San Lotano Oval Maduro has excellent construction and flavor.

Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

Mexican San Andres Maduro
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Mexican tobacco is very dark and the best leaves can be used as maduro wrappers. San Andres Maduro is a thick, medium bodied dark leaf, also called San Andres Morron. Like Connecticut Broadleaf, San Andres Maduro is stalk cut and used for binder and wrapper.

Nicaragua
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

It's been a long time since smoking a San Lotano Oval and I have no clue why I waited this long-- what a great smoke from beginning to end! I chose the oval Maduro . This cigar is the perfect shape to hold in your hands and to put to the mouth. Very comfortable. The notes upon first light are red pepper, along with cocoa and fruitiness. Also cedar and leather are right up there. Into the 2nd third, the pepper mellows a bit but the creaminess and sweet notes are still working for a great balance. This cigar is showing its complexity for sure. The last third definitely picks up in intensity to a definite full body, but smooth. The construction was awesome-- at one point the ash was well over an inch or more and sturdy. Draw was perfect-- no relighting necessary. This cigar was a rich, thick flavorful smoke!! Need to try this at some point.

Tasty goodness!! I'm loving this maduro. It was chocolaty at the front with some peppery notes working through the 2nd and 3rd thirds. Slight uneven burn, which really never corrected itself, but still not enough to worry about to keep me from buying this again.
