On occasion Padron manufactures a special release to commemorate a significant family date or event. Their 2009 release, the 45 Years Family Reserve, landed the top spot on Cigar Aficionado's 2009 Cigar of the Year. The Family Reserve will consist of a series of 6 cigars with one size to be launched each year until Padron's 50th anniversary in 2014. Sale limited to 1 box per customer.

Most cigars are manufactured in the Caribbean and Central America.
Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Maduro
Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Nicaraguan cigar wrappers are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Wrappers grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro wrappers are all produced in Nicaragua.

Nicaragua
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

Jordan Espinosa My uncle loves cigars, and the 4 sampler looks like a perfect gift for him. I'm getting my Christmas shopping done early. Do cigars expire like food? Would it be better to wait and get the cigars closer to when I'll gift it to him?

NeptuneCigar.com If you purchase cigars far in advance you will need to keep them humidified. You may do this by purchasing a humidor as well, or you may even use a Tupperware style container with Boveda (humidity) packets.

Just started off the Easter weekend with this cigar and a craft root beer. Construction and draw were top notch as always with Padron. The flavors were mostly milk chocolate, cedar and woodsy flavors. This cigar had very little pepper which suprised me. Also had a little burnt smoke/wood in the background which was a little weird. While I enjoyed the cigar and would smoke it again, it was not the best Padron has to offer (I enjoy the family reserve 46 and the Padron 80 more).

For the money, I’d probably go for a 1926 instead. The smoke smelled amazing, but very little of it came through in flavor. Still great construction, but underwhelming overall.

After bringing some of my better smokes this week on vacation(Atabey Spiritus, Eye of the Shark and Liga Flying Pig), surprised that my favorite of the week was a Padron Family reserve 46. I am not that big of a Padron fan boy in general though their construction is always top notch. This was a creamy cigar with notes of dark chocolate, cream, peanuts and some spice. Just excellent and will be getting more.

A very good cigar. Front half was just delicious with creamy milk chocolate with a little pepper in the background. The second half took a little step back with some burnt woody flavors creeping in. The construction, burn and draw were perfect. Overall very enjoyable.

These are all perfect. I had taken a step back from Padron after having some of the regular 1964s and 1926s but when I lit the first one of this set, I was instantly glad I bought it. The aged tobacco is so smooth and flavorful and it doesn't leave any undesirable aftertaste which is key for me. I don't know if I can even pick a favorite out of these because they are all amazing in their own way. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up if you even remotely like a full flavor maduro.

Got this one with the family reserve sampler and it's the first one I chose to try. I like this stick much better than the regular 1964 and even the 1926. The wrap was super toothy and had so many beautiful tiny bumps on it and smells of rich cocoa leather earthiness. The smoke is plentiful and is very smooth with almost no undesirable aftertaste like others I have smoked from Padron. It has dark notes of cocoa and coffee with a spice that carries throughout the duration and even builds a little. Definitely glad I tried this even though it's pricey.

Excellent addition to the Family Reserve lineup. My order from Neptune came in excellent condition, carefully packed and humidified. The cigar has classic Padron Maduro flavors, kicked up a notch. Baking spices, cocoa, coffee. Some black licorice on the retrohale, very similar note I get from the 50th Maduro. Beautiful toothy wrapper. Fantastic!

Sadly disappointing. There is a very distinct bitterness, and the draw is so light you could think there is a leak somewhere. For double the price of the already excellent "standard" 64th Anniversario's, these are simply not worth the money.

Nice oily sheen on the wrapper with a perfect draw. Just some minor burn issues, probably because I match lit it instead of my usual quad torch . Lots of black pepper on the lip and aroma. Starts out with dark chocolate and green bell pepper with a little ginger. Powerful but still smooth on the tongue. A great cigar for a cold New England evening snowfall.

The Family Reserve 45 maduro took Cigar Aficionado's magazine cigar of the year back in 2009. They are wrapped in a dark Maduro leaf and are complex, flavorful, rich with notes of spice cedar, nuts and subtle floral accents. These beauties come in a box of 10 cigars. This cigar like all of the Padron cigars has the signature of consistency written all over them, something that has become a little rare in our industry lately. Easy draw, solid construction, smooth creamy aged tobaccos with a slight hint of pepper on the start and finish, not overpowering just the right amount. In our endless search for the perfect cigar many of you will find this your favorite. Love to pair this cigar with a 12 year old Scotch.

After smoking a number of Padron’s I finally arrived on what is off the measurement scale. I don’t notice Aroma much but I surely notice all other areas. Precisely wrapped and box pressed tight but carefully and correct. I am about 5 years into 88-96 rated cigars but hands down, this is the best! Stalwart flavor, proper burn, notes of cedar, roasted chestnuts, a slight creeping restraine sweetness too! In a class, autonomously, and above all others I have fired up, easily a 98 or 99..Exceptional!

This is a great stick - and i have a few more in the humidor (I wish Neptune would let you easily edit review or add 2nd reviews). I did a double punch and it had a pretty loose draw, might have been better with a single punch. Pure baker's chocolate and cocoa powder with cedar notes, basically the whole way through. Smooth and extremely well balanced, but not as raisiny or rich as some younger blends (looking at you Oliva Serie O maduro toro). I wouldn't actually put this much above the 1926 Maduro TAA or No. 9, except to say it felt more "refined". Not sure that's worth a few extra bucks, but this is definitely a stick worth trying if you haven't stepped up to the Family Reseve maduros yet. A few burn issues that may have been my fault, incluind a relight. Damn Tinder taking too much attention lol.

Bought 2 of these from Neptune and one was definitely skinnier than the other. Smoked the fatter one last night. Beautiful cocoa flavor from first draw through to final 1/3. In a way it is significantly more complex and significantly more subtle than the 1926 maduros -- the No. 1 and No. 9 have been my go-to Padrons. From reading, this probably has to do with the 10-year aged tobacco supposedly in this blend. Really a great, rewarding, rich-smoke experience. Would buy more. Only complaint is the final 1/3 got a bit harsh and hot towards the nub - not totally "nubbable" as they say.

I waited a while to order a box of these, but I clearly waited too long. This is an excellent and evolving stick. Cold draw is beautiful. First 3rd is super smooth with espresso and raisin notes, but mostly s'mores. About the halfway point you pick up the spice; I'm not talking about the stuff in your pantry, I'm talking about jalapeño spice. I'm a retrohaler, so it's tingling my sinuses. The balance of the smoke is spicy and nutty, with occasional hints of anise. Aroma is mushrooms and only mushrooms. Burn was occasionally wonky but always self corrected. I smoked three of these before this review and all were consistent. Worth the price? Yup!

I just want to start off this review by saying that this cigar is pound-for-pound my favorite all-time smoke. Padron knocks it out of the park yet again with the Family Reserve 85 maduro. At a glance, this cigar has a silky, chocolaty wrapper to compliment the sleek box-pressed style. Upon lighting, your senses are hit with that characteristic Padron-punch and flavor. In the first 1/3 the flavors are slightly leathery and nutty with hints of chocolate beneath. As you approach the second half of the cigar, the flavors of chocolate and nuts become more pronounced and remain consistent through to the end. The ash throughout is a beautiful white ash and an even burn that needs no relighting. Overall, I would rate this cigar a solid 10/10. Smoke to the nub!

As I seat on my patio I have a Family Reserve #85 that I have been enjoying for 40 minutes. The white ash is 4" long and I can only say life is good. This is the best of the best. Everyone should treat themselves to this exceptional cigar that is worth the price. The ash is pure white & I have less than inch left and the there is no let up in aroma,taste.

Padron is known for their mark of excellence in the cigar making world. As of the end of last year, they released their 50 year anniversary blend which was an instant hit, even made its way to Cigar Aficionado's prestigious Top 10. At a glance the dark wrapper looks like it came right out of a box of delicious chocolates. The smoke lasting about 45 minutes to an hour, it was nothing short of perfection. It burned evenly throughout the whole cigar and even kept a tight ash even to the half way mark. The taste was bold and magnificent, pushing its way to being my favorite Padron. This cigar rightfully deserves to belong in the Top 10 of ANY list, along with any smokers own personal humidor.

I was skeptical of it at first due to its size( I'm a 60 ring plus guy) but once I lit it, that's when the little guy stepped up. Full of tan smoke with the draw of loose wrap. It definitely has that Padron punch and spice. Makes me want to buy more of this size if they can show up this big.
