Oliva Serie V Melanio is the long awaited follow up to the popular Oliva Serie V. Launched in 2012, the brand honors Melanio Oliva, the first of the Oliva family to grow tobacco in the 1800s. The Serie V Melanio are made of Nicaraguan filler and binder grown by the Oliva family, and finished with an Ecuador Sumatra seed tobacco also grown by Oliva. The company uses their most aged fillers for the Serie V line, and in the Serie V Melanio cigars they have added a bit more Jalapa tobacco to the blend, making it more flavorful without adding strength.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Ecuador is the perfect place to grow wrappers, because it is located on the Equator! And it has rich soils too. The weather conditions, with a nearly permanent cloudy sky, provide a natural shade, protecting the wrapper plants from sunshine and allowing the tobacco to grow thin and light. Ecuador supplies Connecticut and Sumatra type wrappers to many cigar factory in the world.

The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

The company's flagship brand, Oliva Serie V, has obtained some of the highest ratings in cigar publications worldwide. Their cigars use mostly tobacco harvested by the company in their various farms in Nicaragua.

What a beautiful box-press figurado! The construction is incredible, wrapper leaf is tight. Dual classy bands with copper embossing. Slant straight-cut, lit-up the nipple tip with ease. Draw starts expectedly tight, but flavor profile is mellow and creamy. As it progresses there is a pistachio and grains medley. There's leather, and milk chocolate in the blend. Draw opens up and the burnline is tight with a conical ash stack left behind. The backside started to expand slightly, but it didn't disrupt the burn or flavor much. At the halfway point the expansion seems to have calmed, I think it was from the culmination of a box-press and figurado: a difficult feat to accomplish. The burn remained consistent throughout and the line held razor-sharp. Flavor profile was medium-bodied coffee, a dash of cinnamon and some earth. Into the final third, the draw remains effortless. Flavors are nuanced and there's a touch of floral and vegetal intertwined with toasted bread and almond. Overall it's a delight! A strong 4, with an edge for the appearance based on construction and the delightful dual banding. Spent a relaxing 105 minutes with it, and eventually paired with espresso. ?????

I thought I was going to love this stick since I have enjoyed some of the other sizes. Just too heavy floral notes for my liking. Some chocolate and nutty flavors in there which is the part I liked. Draw and burn were pretty good.

Aside from excellent presentation, box and cigars, smells like laquer thinner, and cigars on cold draw smell like aceton with laquer. It is so upsetting. I font know why factory used such a bad chemicals for packaging…?? I dont know if removing cigars from box will fix the issue…

Overall a great cigar. I knew getting this cigar that I wouldn't love the feel since box pressed cigars are not my preference, but I truly love the flavor profile. Thick smoke, rich flavor, but draw was slightly harsh. The burn did get wonky towards the end but this is common with boxed cigars.

I smoke cuban cigar every day. In fact, I saved oliva cigar at first, but I didn't like the bitter taste of noncuban cigar, so I left it unattended. I was forced to smoke today. The cold draw smelled of corn. And it has no bitterness and is more excellent than Davidoff. It's soft, savory and has no bitterness.

The Oliva Melanio Serie V No. 4 is named in honor of the man who started the brand in 1886 in Cuba with his first plantations and eventually migrated to Nicaragua to continue his legacy. This Sumatra seed wrapper grown in Ecuador and its Nicaraguan ligero fillers are an excellent combination. The cigar wrapper appears smooth to the eye with minimal veins, and the soft box-pressed construction gives it a certain elegance. Entering the first third, there is a beautiful earthiness combined with a medium strength black pepper which makes it a great smoke to drink alongside a single malt Scotch. In the second third, there are some changes. The notes of black pepper continue, but it starts to have a certain natural sweetness to the mix which makes the experience deliciously complete. The last third maintained its consistency but added some cinnamon notes to the flavor, which was a pleasant surprise. It is a short cigar in size but definitely not in flavor at all, and it hovers in the medium to full strength spectrum throughout the session, making it in my opinion a great cigar to have in your humidor at all times. These come highly recommended by many smokers, and I endorse that sentiment 100%. Enjoy.

I’ve always smoked the smaller Melanios because the Jaime Garcia Super Gordo has been my long smoke “go to”, until this one. I love the size (60 gauge box press 6). It has the the good qualities of the smaller Melanios I’ve smoked. It’s now one my favorites for a long smoke!

Great cigar.. precisely and correctly rolled and constructed.. lovely hue in sunlight! Flavor is remarkable with hints of cedar and some berry and slightly earthy! I prefer a stronger presence but that does not bemoan this fine cigar. It is more than medium in intensity but does approach full flavored when it hits the 4” remaining point and I become more of a fan. Retro hale is smooth.. neither throat or nostrils are punished. Very enjoyable stick and classy high quality… easily a 91 or 92. Smoke it slowly to get a true experience!

Based on the occasion; that is, either alone, in company, Serie V Melanio is one of several "go-to" sticks for my taste. Running out of the larger stick, the humidor (I use an older Daniel Marshall for this stick) has recently been restocked with the Robusto. Of all the Oliva Series, and I have not tried all, I continue to return to the Serie V Melanio as my preference. Caveat: I am not an astute aficionado; one who can tell the nuances of all the "flavors" invoked by such. Just a plain guy seeking the simpler (and sometimes finer), comfortable, relaxing pleasures afforded during available time. The Oliva Serie V Melanio is a wrap for me. I find the Melanio leans mild and mellows. A great smoke alone, or with some fellows. I hope this is some help for you and any consideration.

I've smoked a few of these and quality is consistent time and time again. They're beautiful cigars and the feel of the Sumatran wrapper excites the tactile senses. Shame we have to burn them! Nice rich smoke, good draw, and almost always a perfect burn. I'd call it medium plus in terms of body, and flavors include cayenne (most prominently in the beginning), leather, oak, and a sweet caramel finish. It's refined but never unapproachable, so cigar enthusiasts on a budget can try without disappointment. I love them and I think you will too.

For me it doesn't get much better because this is a consistently great stick in both construction and flavor. The smooth, full bodied, complex, yet approachable flavor profile allows for enjoyment by anyone at any time. I like to have some robustos, torpedoes, and no. 4s in the humidor just because the different takes on this blend are so good. Highly recommended for new and experienced smokers!

This is a go to for me whenever I want a good solid smoke. The torpedo always has a place in my humidor. Always a delicious creamy smoke. A great medium body smoke at a great price point. This one will not disappoint.

I have tried up and down the line of Oliva Serie Vs. The larger ones tend to overwhelm me. I am liking the smaller ones better and this Melanio is no different. The cool sweetness of the Serie V is right there up front but there is a spicy or herbal note that creeps up in between tokes that is really nice. The wrapper color on all these Serie Vs are gorgeous, a dark red-brown that is smooth as silk. They really are pretty cigars. Burn, draw, everything aligned. For me, I think of these Serie Vs as a milkshake. Thick velvety sweetness, just don't order the large ;-)

Beautiful appearance. Wrapper is flawless. Draw is dead on. Smoke out-put is outstanding. Some burn issues: canoeing and had to touch up twice. Incredibly smooth for a medium-full bodied cigar. Notes of cocoa, leather, oak and semi-sweet cream. Final third I was hit with salty peanuts. Crazy. Total flavor bomb. Smooth and complex. Highly recommend for medium smokers.

Oliva Melanio has been widely reviewed, mostly great comments. I Agree with most. Good construction, solid with a Perfect Draw. Pristine wrapper, no seams whatsoever. Nice aroma, before and after lighting. Flavors are good, Strong, you can feel the Ligero content. Above average but not complex. Even Burn with grey ash. Good to Great, just not Amazing.

I have smoked Oliva for awhile now and tried various fillers. Jalapa with Nicaraguan filler was great surprise for me. Maybe the wrapper combinations had a lot to do with the flavor but I was stupefied. Glad I purchased a box.

This is a 6 1/2 x 52 double tapered, box pressed Figurado exhibiting a reddish dark brown wrapper with no raised veins. It is an impressive looking smoke. A surprising (to me) floral note is apparent just before the halfway point of the stick. Flavors noted were oak, espresso, dark chocolate, hay, and a sweetness that I cannot put my finger on. A most thoughtful addition, Oliva attached a foam buffer to the back of the cedar insert that goes on top of the cigars (individually sectioned) in the box to prevent any damage to the sticks themselves. These beauties are hand rolled using ligero fillers, adding a robust and rich flavor. This is one good looking cigar as well as a very pleasurable smoke.

This is the one of the worst cigars I smoked. Terrible burn, had to relight it at least 4 times. Hard, unsatisfying draw. Aroma and taste are mediocre, to say the least. Big disappointment coming from Oliva. And expensive one.

There is a sweet spiciness, almost slightly sour/medicinal note, to the Melanios that I find pretty interesting. This Robusto is a fine short smoke - I like the Double Toro and the Churchill (most refined) and the Figurado more, for a longer smoke, but if you're playing in the Robusto size this is worth a try. Won't blow you away with depth or complexity -- just a darn good little smoke that keeps you interested. Often times, that's more than enough.

Every time I have this cigar, I am amazed at how consistent it burns, just razor sharp. This is the Melanio I grab when I don’t have a lot of time, it usually has around a 40-45 min burn time for me when not drawing too heavily on it. The flavors are very complex, a creamy sweet vanilla with a hint of espresso. Very smooth with a nice finish.

Havent had the Oliva Melanio Series V in over 2 years. I bought box from Neptune and not disappointed. Same great mellow but full taste as I remembered. Very tasty and perfect construction, burn. I recommend this Cigar to novice beginner cigar Aficionados as a great medium baseline flavor cigar as baseline and grow your palette up or down.

Oliva is a brand I smoke often because of their consistent quality and and taste. This was my first time having the Figurado and I found it to be an excellent smoke from the get go. I was sent an opened box from Neptune. The Oliva stickers and the Nicaragua authenticity stickers that are placed when the box ships from factory were all pre-cut. This is unusual since the times before I received a complete unopened box from Neptune. The cigars were all cracked and dried out. Sent email asking for remedy of issue and was not contacted. For me, it’s pretty straight forward in terms of flavor. It has flavors of earth, leather, nuts, and some good spice. You can also tell it has a distinct sweet aged tabacco. Prefer the figurado, but good for the price. Has a very good draw and output of smoke.

Bought the box with the Neptune "at cost" discount. Incredible deal. These are absolutely fantastic classics! I actually prefer this size even to the figurado. The best size in this line for me. Complex flavors of caramel, nutmeg, wood, some spice. Burned straight the entire time, only issue is these tend to burn faster then other sizes I have smoked in this line. The wrapper looked great, no flaws in it. Draw slightly loose, close to perfect.

I am a big fan of this line, but had not tried this size. Very strong coffee at the beginning, then tappers off into a creamy note with some coffee and a hint of spice. Burn line required one touch up. Was able to smoke down to the nub without any bitterness. Was a really good medium bodied smoke!

I have enjoyed the Oliva V Melanio Toro Natural on several occasions. The taste for this stick is great and full of flavor. The strength for me is fairly medium and could be something for an intermediate smoker (especially the Toro size). It is a slow burner and can take up well over 1.5 hours, depending on the activity you are doing. Ash holds great. It is hard to say if I like the Figurado or the Toro best. Definitely recommend a V-Cut for a better smoke. Pairing could be coffee, whiskey, scotch or bourbon or even water. Enjoy!

My preference is a lot of flavor and a fairly loose draw. This cigar has great flavor but I found the draw to be just a bit tight. The Oliva Serie V Melanio Gran Reserva Limitada Figurado Sumatra is my favorite Oliva but this one ranks right up there. I gave one to a friend and I were smoking it I personally used the perfect draw about 1/2 way into the cigar my friend thought the draw was perfect. Burn fantastic.

I tried this smoke when it first came out and was voted #1 back in 2015 or 2016. Though it was a smaller ring guage, it still packed a punch. I saw you all had it in a 60 and so I ordered it. The fit was perfect. It lit evenly and burned the same. The draw was easy and the smoke was filling with an aroma that could be worn all day with great compliments. Very enjoyable down to the ring.

I dropped the cigar right after I cut it and cracked the foot. I was forced to clip off some of the cigar to save it. I mention this because I'm sure it effected the burn. I found the draw was very loose but the cigar still produced nice cool smoke in a large amount; I just prefer a bit of resistance. As for the aroma the cold smell and draw was great, it was however to windy outside to really smell the smoke aroma so I gave 3 stars to try and be fair. I thought the cigar was great, it reminded me of a petite Bolivar there was spice throughout mostly on the retrohale but also on the tongue, it was never overpowering. There was also a sweet creaminess, some woodiness, and some other flavors that while pleasant I couldn't really place. I would say I really didn't have enough time with the cigar to really get to know it, but it was a great first date and I can't wait until the next one.

This was an awesome smoke! The draw was perfect, and gave a beautiful amount of smoke output. The construction was also great: no cracking or splitting and also had prominent veins. The burn was the only thing that wasn't so perfect. It started off great, but I ended up needing a relight about halfway through. That fixed the problem. The taste was very nice. It included notes of mild pepper that filled the palate nicely. I would taste it in the back of my throat, and the pepper taste would trickle to the tip of my tongue. I usually don't like peppery tobacco, but the pepper I tasted in this stick was quite pleasant. I also picked up some woody tastes which were very enjoyable as well. Overall, I would smoke this again.

This is one of my favorite cigars. Most excellent structure, smoke, flavor. Best enjoyed with your favorite single malt scotch or cognac and friends that appreciate a high-quality sticks. To enjoy this cigar you need a mature developed pallet. As always to appreciate fully try slightly venting your exhale through your nose to get the full flavor this cigar has to offer.

This is nearly a 5-star stick if you stick within the confines of a smooth, medium-bodied sometimes even light cigar. Do not go into this expecting a rich, spice bomb. The Oliva Melanio Figurado and the Robusto both pack more bunch. This stick is a long smooth light-coffee and hazelnut experience. It almost never deviates, from first light to the nub - which is a characteristic of the Olivas, I'm finding - just consistently smooth. If you want a morning cigar by the pool with a cuppa joe, this could do the trick. it's not going to command / demand your attention, but it's a well-made, easy to smoke, impressive-looking stick. As long as you go into it with that context, of something on the lighter side and less complex side, you wont' be let down.

Beautiful to behold, the torpedo shaped Olivia Seria V, Gran Reserva is well constructed. The density is perfect with a satisfying draw that is easy, but not too easy. The cigar burns evenly and leaves a short, blunt ash. The taste is natural and mild throughout. Its squared shape, however, feels odd to my hand. Cigars should be round, I think, and I hope this trend will pass. Other than that, the Olivia Seria V is a totally delightful experience.

A very smooth cigar on a milk chocolate colored Sumatra wrapper. The cigar kicks off with chocolate notes and some light pepper. Aged tobacco notes are more prominent going into the second third. The final third brings back more chocolate notes and becomes a bit more peppery. For those unfamiliar with Oliva, almost all of their lines can be found under $10. The Melanio is their flagship line and the figurado size won Cigar Aficionado's 2014 Cigar of the Year. If you do not have the time to smoke the large figurado, I suggest you smoke the robusto size.

It is easy to understand why this is a fan favorite. Oliva always offers quality and this is certainly no exception. One of the best box pressed feels in the hand I have experienced. Wood on the start moves to a consistent creamy taste with the wood moving decidedly to the background. I personally prefer something stronger and more complex and nuanced but for anyone wanting a medium body stick there are few better options. 91

Wonderful medium bodied nutty leathery flavors. Very smooth from beginning to end. A slow burner with a perfect draw. On the strength-o- meter, it comes in on the light side of medium. Now for the bad news... I enjoyed this cigar with my local Oliva rep. It went out on me twice due to tunneling. He told me that this is the first time that he'd ever seen this cigar tunnel like that so I guess it just wasn't my lucky day. I wonder if the burn problem was related to the fact that I lost my first ash after only about a half inch. Overall: Other than the burn issue, this cigar was a real winner. No wonder it's been getting so much media hype.

I am a huge fan of both the Oliva grown Sumatran wrapper and the full draw on all the Oliva Melanio sticks. I try to keep a few of one style or another in my box at all times. I recently purchased a box of the Corona Extra as I find this a great, complimentary size for when a short and satisfying smoke is required. Lastly, as a fairly fussy cigar enthusiast I want to note that I only purchase online from the folks at Neptune.

Excellent cigar. Rich thick smoke, medium-bodied. Pre-light draw varies, a bit tight to fine, probably because of the tapered head and foot. Draw is fine after smoking past the taper. One of my favorite cigars now. Beautiful to look at, and look even better in the box. Starting my second box now. Highly recommended!

This, of course, is the recently popular Oliva V Melanio blend, whose Figurado size won the top spot in Cigar Aficionado's esteemed Top 25 list for 2014. I've had the pleasure of smoking this cigar a couple of times in the past, and decided to refresh my memory with this robusto. Within seconds of lighting, I was instantly reminded of what I was in for: a strong, but not TOO strong, spicy, but not TOO spicy, overall fantastic smoke. Notes of wood and pepper flood the senses right away, with notes of nutmeg seeping in throughout. The ash was solid and strong, without falling until forced to. Draw was beyond superb. I'm glad the Melanio was given the honor of #1 cigar of the year, as it is a blend very well deserving of recognition. Enjoy with either a coffee or a nice scotch.

This is one of my favourite sticks, not to say my favourite in this range of price. But compared to the Padron 1964 range that have some similar aromas, it is really a bargain when bought in a box of 10. The belicoso and figurado are a above this one, but considering that the only default I find in the Melanio line is the lack of transition between the three thirds, this is one is just the good size. You can't make any mistake buying it. The box of 10 is really smart for this range of price. Very luxury packing to make a present or spoil yourself !

This stick is very good. There is no question about that. However I can mention two defaults. One is about the fragile wrapper, probably a result of this shape (I don't really see interest in figurado shape). The damaged wrapper were not Neptune issue as I got them in a sealed box of 10. My second concern is the lack of transition between the three thirds, which makes this stock, although very good a bit boring to smoke. I would suggest more the belicoso shape, which is cheaper and also very tasty. I wouldn't be surprised it is exactly the same blend as size is the same except the shape. However regarding the reasonable price for this kind of flavored stick, you won't regret your purchase. I wouldn't have rated 96 as cigar aficionado, but for sure 90 or above.

I have smoked the awarded figurado and this one as well. The period of time was not close enough to say if the blend is exactly the same as the figurado because size is the same except the shape. But what I can say is that it is excellent and a good alternative to the figurado who got 96 but who is also more expensive. You won't be disappointed with any of this and the figurado. Really Worth the price. I would even say the box of 10 is a bargain.

Smoked one of the Olivia V Melanio in robusto and thought it was an excellent cigar. Great draw from the start. Rich creamy smoke throughout the smoke. Definitely a cigar I would buy on a regular basis and keep in my humidor.
