Despite many decades of war and revolution in this Central American country, the cigar industry has thrived due to the hard work and tenacity of Cuban exiles to the land such as Plasencia, Padron, Oliva, Ortez, and others. Tobacco has been a force of social stability, and the country is now one of the principal exporters of premium cigars in the world.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Maduro wrapper can go from dark coffee brown with a reddish tint to blackish brown (the latter also called Oscuro).

USA Connecticut Broadleaf
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Connecticut Broadleaf is grown in the United States' Connecticut Valley and is prized for its dark, oily, full flavored and aromatic characteristics. The plants are grown in full sun giving this cigar wrapper its characteristic sweetness. The Connecticut Broadleaf plant leaves are mainly processed as maduro tobacco. Today, Connecticut Broadleaf seeds are being grown in other countries besides the United States.
Binder
Nicaragua
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.

Has a picturesque band with intricate detailing, striking embossed colorways and gold accenting fit for a family crest. The wrapper leaf is a bit rugged, toothy freckles, wispy veins and weathered edges. The band accounted for most of the stars here. The pre-lit aroma is mulch and cedar. vcut up. dry draw is open and has notes of chocolate powder, and a cooling mint. first third flavors were walnut, oak, and molasses, the faint menthol/eucalyptus cooling lingered on the finish. The burnline was a rolling syrupy hedge with a loose speckled stack in its wake. Effortlessly sliding into the second third, the ash held strong. Baker's chocolate took center stage, hinted at in the dry draw. The retrohale was zesty citrus and more cocoa reminiscent of the chocolate oranges of Christmas time. Ashed at the halfway mark and it revealing a well constructed cone. taking it past the bands: dry cocoa remained the backbone with caramelized peanuts and buttery cashew atop. There's a dash of nutmeg, but nothing substantial. The draw remained open and produced effortless plumes. overall, it's a pleasant smoke, that develops throughout. The box-press contours between fingers nicely. The burn worked for its stars: ashed in thirds, and self-corrected a slight tilt then finished strong. Final time with it was 55 minutes.

Well, I gotta tell ya, I picked up as a various size 5-pack only because it was an Oliva. Didn't particularly read any details about it. Smoked them all and just now went online to purchase more. Then to my amazement, I read they are a maduro .... I don't like maduro cigars, but I'll make an exception with this'n. Excellent cigar. Not the prettiest Oliva makes, but right up there with the best. Just wish they made a larger ring gauge, in the 56-60 range.

Even though the Serie V nub is fairly common, the other cigars are very interesting for Oliva fans. One blend can only be found here, while the other three are shapes not typically found in their respective lines. I also bought the Serie V sampler to compare the habano diadema to the maduro diadema! All great smokes and well worth the price.

Truly a great cigar! A great deal of unique character that sets this cigar apart. I’ve smoked these and the larger torpedo but the 5” delivers more innate flavor; earth, hay ever so sweet, hints of cedar and a tad of cinnamon. I always light in stillness, a couple jumped the gun and began to wander… easily addressed. Exceptional cigar, very very flavorful and a ton of bluish smoke. It is clearly an above 90 cigar… I’ll go with 93 or 94.. it is a beauty visually and fired up!

Beautifully complex cigar. Absolutely stunning. The only complaint I have is the snug draw. But nothing a Perfec Draw couldn't fix. Smoke output was plenty, cool all the way down to the nub, smooth heavy smoke, and razor sharp burn. Weird pairing, but I did down a couple of Bloody Mary's with this one.

This is a beautifully and exceptionally well constructed cigar with a rich amber toned perfect wrapper embracing sheer high quality. It is not for a rookie or neophyte smoker. It is lush, perfect draw and burn line. The flavor mellows to a close to full flavored level with a twinge of sweetness and class. I get earth, cedar, a bit of hay and just a nip of blackberry. The smoke takes on a bluish hue. This is a No-Hurry beauty surely in the 93 range! Excellent cigar, not to be discounted when the top 25 voting comes around!

This is something new to me from the Oliva brand called Master Blends Number 3. Its a Robusto size, box pressed. The wrapper is dark brown Maduro color, very thick, sturdy looking. It looks like a single maybe a double cap, punchcut the draw is snug. No prelight aroma report. First tastes are quite robust - savory leathery, a bit spicy. Starting off medium to full right away. The draw seems to have opened up after a few puffs. The pack feels about medium really not too tight. I'll be hard-pressed to get all the flavors out of this, there's a lot. I might just have to cop out and say all of the above really. Leather, wood, earth, definitely spice - bakery spices - everything. Into the first third, flavors are beginning to get in order. Leather and spice first, then wood and dried fruit but not really sweet, hints of nuts and cream trailing behind. This seems to be a slow burner. Ash is tight, white and bailed at about 1.5 inches. Burnline is crisp and nearly straight. At mid-third there is profile shift. The rough leather turned to suede and texture (mouthfeel), not the taste, becomes more creamy. Spice is still abundant but fruit dropped off. I like this vitola. A box pressed, Maduro wrapped Robusto ticks all my preferences. Flavor is mostly a savory leather still with spice. Reaching the back 3rd and there's yet another flavor shift, very savory now with a taste of dark brown bread. Construction and burn performance have been spot on. Expecting strength but not really getting it. There is a touch of eucalyptus near the end, no bitterness. Easily an hour of smoke time.

First Third - Starts off with rich tobacco with a slight sweetness, nutty finish. Sweetness goes away after a few puffs. Perfect burn line. Medium plus strength. Second third - Some cedar joins the tobacco, finish changes to a roasted nut flavor. Still medium plus in strength. Perfect burn line. Final third is a mix of wood, nut, and cocoa powder. Full strength. Overall, nice stick.

Incredible stick from the offset. The wrapper looks like an expensive piece of wooden furniture. The construction is exquisite and just screams quality. The smoke is no different. First few puffs and you know this is is going to be great. A little peppery at first but soon mellows out to be very creamy and great mouth feel. 2nd 3rd becomes cedar, leathery, chocolate and coffee but very rounded. The final burn becomes a little more intense of wood and coffee but not the menthol/pepper taste you’d expect. Oily and even throughout and burns perfect. Only had to relight at the finish. Didn’t want it to end. Great smoke. Up there with the Melanio.

There are some consistency issues across this sampler. The best performer was the Connecticut. They all had fairly decent flavor, but burn and draw wasn’t consistent throughout. That’s why a sampler is a good value. You learn a lot. Oliva’s are good I’ll try a similar sampler in robusto next time. I’m a torpedo fan. I feel it a shape that can go a long way in maximizing flavor or expressing shortcomings in a cigar.

I really wanted to love this stick, for it to be super amazing. It was, at best, reasonable. I ordered a 2nd one so I will see if it changes with some humidor time. The appearance is fantastic - it is box pressed but keeps the rounded sides, a unique shape (for me, anyway). Beautiful chocolate wrapper. But it smokes kind of thin, lacking the depth in the Serie V line and seeming both stronger but more shallow. Didn't really improve into the 2nd 1/3 and final 1/3. I was expecting the Oliva smoothness kicked up a few notches, but it didn't get there - felt like it gave something up. Worth trying at the price but I wouldn't recommend it over the Serie V.

I am a big Oliva fan and have tried just about everything they make. Have had three of the five cigars in the sampler. The Series V Nub, the Series G Maduro Belicoso, and the OC-001. So far they have all been very harsh and bitter tasting. I have smoked a lot of Series V cigars and especially like the Belicoso size. The Nub left something to be desired. So far I would not buy any of the ones I tried.

This is the second Oliva I've smoked; the first being the V series Melanio. I didn't really like that one either. I've never really understood why these get such high reviews; the flavor is okay, but not great, and tends to get harsh. Also, had an after taste of tar. Not great. Will not buy again.

I tried the #1 cigar for 2014 ranked by Cigar Aficionado from Oliva, the Oliva Serie V Melanio Figurado and was completely bored by it. But I know that just because one cigar from a brand doesn't catch your fancy, others may. Which leads me to the incredible tasting Oliva Master Blends 3 Robusto. In terms of taste, I rank this up with Opus X. It's one of the few cigars I do. And one of the few cigars I keep stocking up on. It garnered a 92 rating from CA. I think it deserves much higher.

as you might very well know Oliva has done it again very nice. this is a slow burning Cigar. I enjoyed every puff of it!

This is a masterpiece, truly a piece of craftsmanship! I haven't smoked this cigar in a long time but just looking at it, brings good memories of a fine, flavorful smoke. The wrapper is dark brown, oily but with a very strong texture. As soon as it's lit it is all about flavor and aroma; the pepper, cocoa, and leather notes are strong from the beginning combined with a hint of coffee right after the third inch. Creamy and smooth all the way to the end, it started as a medium smoke but ended almost as a full bodied. Well balanced, bold, nice construction, lots of smoke!!! All Attributes of an exceptional smoke.

This stick is absolutely unique. It is the most complete palete of spices aromas I ever smoke. For people who like Thai food, you can find most of spices variety that you have in Thai food. This said, to enjoy these spices aroma you have to face a real full body strengh. However the aromas are not hidden by strengh. I wouldn't make it my daily smoke for the reason of the strengh, but once a month it is really enjoyable. Beside spices there is not much other aromas, but these spices flavors are so various that they are enough to please you a lot. Absolutely worth the price.

The Oliva Master Blend series (1, 2 and 3) are as close to a perfect grouping of cigars as you can find. The MB3 is no exception. Of the five review criteria, all being 5's, the taste is the one to stand out. The cigar has umami, which for trained smokers, is what we are all looking for. A+++
