Altadis has called the H. Upmann 1844 Reserve their finest H. Upmann to date. Made in the Tabacalera de Garcia factory in Dominican Republic, it offers intricate flavors and a fuller bodied smoke than the original H. Upmann, with an Ecuadorian Cubano wrapper, Nicaraguan binder and Dominican filler tobaccos. 1844 marks the year when the original H. Upmann cigar was created.

Most cigars are manufactured in the Caribbean and Central America.
The Dominican Republic is the world's first producer of cigars. Most factories are located in Santiago, in the center of the island, and in close proximity to the tobacco fields grown in the fertile Cibao Valley. While tobacco and cigars have always traditionally been produced in the Dominican Republic, many Cuban cigar makers established in the Dominican Republic after the Cuban communist revolution, elevating the quality of Dominican cigars.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Natural wrapper, also known as Colorado Claro, is light brown in color.

Ecuadorian Habano
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Ecuadorian Habano wrapper has become one of the most used cigar wrappers in the market. Grown primarily by the Oliva family, this tobacco originated from Habano or H2000 seeds brought to Ecuador from Cuba. This leaf is rich and flavorful thanks to the temperate climate of Ecuador and the quality of its volcanic soil.

Nicaragua
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Nicaraguan cigar binders are produced mainly in Esteli and Jalapa, both lands with volcanic soil and excellent climate for growing tobacco. Binders grown in Jalapa have sweet undertones. Corojo, Habana2000, Criollo, and Maduro binders are all produced in Nicaragua.

Dominican Republic
Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.
Filler (or “tripa” in Spanish) is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar. The Dominican Republic is considered one of the most premier tobacco growing countries in the world. The filler tobacco grown in this Caribbean island nation ranges from mild to full bodied. Olor Dominicano and Piloto Cubano are the main types of tobacco grown in the Dominican Republic.

At the beginning of this week I received a box of this tobacco and what a great disappointment for the quality of them, poor quality of the leaves as well as the wrapping many half-split and they do not burn at all well. What differentiates the other comments that have left other smokers.

Good cigar. Really nice wrapper, although the cap was a bit rough looking and the band unevenly applied. Really nice aroma and good taste. Pretty even burn—draw was a bit tight from the pre draw through the last third. Still good smoke production. I’d smoke it again.

The 1844 is a winner. It's well made, beautiful size and color. It delivers a mellow satisfying flavor. A little pricey for my every day cigar but definitely one to keep on hand for special occasions.

This will be the third time I've had this sampler and its become a tradition to order it every holiday season. Both times I was pleased with 8 and only mildly disappointed with 1. Offers a good cross section of choices with varying flavors and strengths. My personal favs are the Monte and the Banker but there is something in this sampler for everyone. first time ordering it from Neptune and got it fast with no issues at all.

Milk chocolate wrapper with some veining present. An easy to smoke mild cigar. Initial flavors of grass, and light citrus undertones, slowly turn to creamy leather and wood. Clean burn and decently long ash.

I have found my everyday smoke with this cigar. Smooth and creamy and the Habano wrapper takes any cigar to that next level. Cigar wrapper is a little fragile but burns very even with consistent smoke output.

This is my go to sampler. I have never been disatisfied with this one. The cigars are always fresh and ready to smoke. Smooth dry draw with no binding, wrapper is smooth and there is a nice aroma, easy lighting with smooth burn. I have yet to have to fix a crooked burn. It is a must try.

You cannot have anything better for the price. A wonderful everyday torpedo that has complex aromas and is full of flavours. Highly recommended.

Very pleasant aroma and flavor, more on the mild to medium side. Very clean taste of tabacco. Smooth, creamy, cedar, and a slight nuttiness. A must have in your Humidor at all times. Only problem was that I hade to relight it twice and touch up a few other times, no biggie

A close friend recommended this smoke to me one day while in Neptunes. I wasn't expecting a lot considering it was only 6 bucks. It was hands down one of the best smokes I've had in a long time for that price. Great burn and draw. Smells terrific. Love it!

Deservedly so, this cigar rates high on Cigar Aficionado. My humidor is running a tad humid, right now, which may have influenced the draw of this cigar. Beautiful, uniform burn, but I found myself relighting the stick a few times (again, could be my own fault re: humidity). The flavor of this smoke is exceptional. I would highly recommend picking up a box. Pairs well with many different bourbons.

OK burn, uneven at times throughout which I had to fix twice. Draw was almost too easy with one cut. Good ash. Wrapper was loose in the first 1/3. Smooth, creamy, nutty, woody. Last 1/3 some pepper which increased to nub, some earthiness.

This cigar has been a staple in my humidor for quite awhile. A great priced, medium bodied cigar! This cigar starts off with some earthiness-- notes of toast, almonds and cedar. The final third ends nutty and a little peppery. Great draw!! I have no problem with the burn. The flavor is not extremely complex but very enjoyable. Good med bodied cigar at a great price point.

First noticed the nice construction and attractive wrapper. The burn was exceptional, easy draw, big smoke, and even burn. Top third started with smooth spice and hints of cedar. Great aroma. The spiciness built some in the middle with a touch of cinnamon. Last third stayed smooth, flavor and strength built and finished nicely. The dominate spiciness was not overbearing but didn't give me a flavor of choice. But since all the experts love it I must be wrong. :) Just a B for me.
