Asylum Insidious by CLE Cigars (Fabricas Unidas) is a Honduran stick with Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper that has been closed with a sweetened cap. Insidious is a mild to medium smoke and just like the other cigars in the Asylum portfolio, it is an affordable premium quality stick.

Most cigars are manufactured in the Caribbean and Central America.
Honduras, a Central American country which shares a border with Nicaragua, is widely known in the premium cigar industry as the ideal place to grow Cuban and Connecticut seed tobaccos. Danli and the Jamastran Valley is considered the heart of Honduras’ cigar industry. The Jamastran Valley is known for producing a full-bodied tobacco that draws strong comparisons to the tobacco grown in the Pinar del Rio region of Cuba. This same region is also known for its Connecticut shade grown and Corojo shade grown tobacco. In addition, Honduras produces Cuban-seed sun grown filler tobaccos of the highest quality.

Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.

The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Ecuador is the perfect place to grow wrappers, because it is located on the Equator! And it has rich soils too. The weather conditions, with a nearly permanent cloudy sky, provide a natural shade, protecting the wrapper plants from sunshine and allowing the tobacco to grow thin and light. This climate allows tobacco growers to grow Connecticut-seed wrapper in the shade without shade cloths, resulting in more economical wrapper.

The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.

This is my first Asylum cigar--I'm quite impressed! Great construction--no cracking or unraveling. The draw was very smooth, requiring only a couple of punches from my Trident. The ash held for a good three inches, and I probably could have gotten more if it hadn't been a windy day. The flavors ranged from nuts to spice, very complex but never overpowering. I usually go for bold, In Your Face flavor, but this is a cigar I'd buy for myself and my friends who like a milder experience. Well done, Asylum! I'll be looking at this brand more closely.

It has a sweet taste, with a very easy draw, almost impossible not to draw on it. Very good construction.The cap is sweet, that you can taste when drawing on it, but there is also a sweet taste when the smoke hits your mouth. There are some, slightly earthy, tobacco notes to the taste, in this cigar. I'll probably buy a couple more of these, more to offer a decent cigar to friends or just to puff on when I'm out-and-about.

I first purchased this at a local B&M without knowing what I was getting myself into. I don't particularly enjoy mild cigars, and knew nothing about Insidious cigars at the time. I was simply impressed by the size of this 7x64 beast. At first, the sweetened cap concerned me (what in the Swisher Sweet hell have we gotten ourselves into?). But during the 1st third, my friend and I looked at each other and both sheepishly commented on how nice it was. Not really much depth or an earth-shattering flavor profile, but it has become my go-to to keep on hand for a nice, long smoke. I enjoy it that much. And comments from my friends who have partaken are always the same. It's a great mid-day smoke to have with a cold cerveza while BBQing or just hanging out.

I LOVE this cigar! Recommended by the staff recently when I told them I wanted a 7-inch mild cigar for the golf course and in general. Best recommendation next to the Liga Undercrown Shade Gran Toro that I regularly order. (On draw, since I began using a punch rather than a cutter, and all of my cigars draw much better, not that they drew badly. Punching's just better for me. Connecticut cigars are pass/fail for me, and this one was definitely enjoyable. Very smooth with more flavor than most CT cigars i've had before. The sweetened tip is subtle and doesn't last too long, so don't let that scare you away. For the price, this is a great mild-medium smoke.

You know, it's a pretty good smoke. Can't say one of my all time favorites but nice to order every once in awhile. I like to share these with beginners, it's a pretty large cigar that can get you 6-9 holes on the golf course without having to relight. Again, a very nice smoke.

First off, I must confess that this review is a somewhat of a mea culpa. When this stick first hit our shelves, I rolled my eyes and scoffed. Was it the monstrous size? The shiny skull band? The name 'insidious'? All of the above? With that being said, I found myself in a very peculiar mood a few afternoons ago, bored of my standard go to selection and about to pour up my third black & tan. I wanted to try something new...something different...something mellow....something that would smoke out my entire back yard. Enter the Insidious Gordo. After promptly removing the shiny skull band, I applied a straight cut and fired it up. Immediately I was greeted with a kiss of sugar on the lips and a grand amount of creamy, mild smoke. Ok, this is not bad....not bad at all. As time passed and my glass drifted toward empty once again, I came to realize that I was really enjoying this cigar, despite my initial reservations. Complex, it is not...but smooth, aromatic and very creamy, it was...in spades. Also noteworthy; there was absolutely zero bitterness detectable, indicating the use of very high quality tobacco despite the very low price point. Due to the size and just how easy it is to smoke this stick...there is a very high fun factor here...it tears down any notion that cigars of this magnitude are a challenge to smoke. Somewhere near the last third, this cigar was still just as pleasant as it was when first lit, and still pumping out more smoke than a coal burning power plant. As I squinted in the late afternoon sunshine, watching the plumes of cumulonimbus like smoke rising up through the tree tops, I felt a sense of repentance for my past prejudices ...and a sense of luck that I was not paid a surprise visit by the fire department. So there you have it. Asylum Insidious Gordo.... don't judge a book by its cover...or a cigar by its band. Cheers!

two years ago all i use to smoke were the connecticut cigars but as a cigar smoker i have worked my way up to a mor medium body \ full body cigar. this was a great smoke after mowing the fall grass and doing yard work it was great to burn a new cigar.the sweetness stay all the way i think this is a great smoke for the first time cigar smokers . i will buy again to keep on hand for a every day cigar.

Upon first looking at the cigar I am drawn to the light caramel color of the wrapper. I don't feel as intimidated by this cigar as I do for most of the darker colored wrappers. Being a new smoker my taste buds have not yet acquired to, in my opinion, the boldness of most cigars. With that being said I enjoyed this cigar, it is a bit long for a quick smoke but the ring gauge is what made me pick it up. It is a very mild and smooth smoke, with a nice sweet tip to delight your taste buds. Overall 8 out of 10, good smoke.

The Asylum Insidious is a mild & creamy premium cigar with a sweet cap and an attractive price point. Construction is solid, and the Connecticut Shade wrapper is quite elegant looking. Flavor notes include butter, sweet cream, cedar... hints of nutmeg and/or other mild spices. Great for beginners or long time smokers who would like to mix things up a bit. Fans of Baccarat and La Fontana also take note of this one.
