Romeo y Julieta Cigars
Romeo y Julieta 1875
In 1903 Pepin Rodriguez Fernandez, bought the "Romeo y Julieta" factory. Pepin worked hard to promote his enterprise and succeeded largely. After the Cuban embargo, the brand disappeared from the American market. Benjamin Menendez took over the task of making and promoting the Dominican version, currently made at Tabacalera de Garcia by Altadis. Romeo y Julieta is today the best selling premium brand in the US. It has been rated 92 by Cigar Aficionado.
The classic cigarillo is 4 inch by 26 ring but can be anywhere under 6 inches and 29 ring.
This cigar is 2"7/8 inches long, or 73.02 mm.
Most cigars are manufactured in the Caribbean and Central America.
The Dominican Republic is the world's first producer of cigars. Most factories are located in Santiago, in the center of the island, and in close proximity to the tobacco fields grown in the fertile Cibao Valley. While tobacco and cigars have always traditionally been produced in the Dominican Republic, many Cuban cigar makers established in the Dominican Republic after the Cuban communist revolution, elevating the quality of Dominican cigars.
Cigar Ring Gauge
The cigar ring gauge corresponds to the diameter of a cigar, this cigar has a ring gauge of 20, so his diameter is 20/64 inches or 7.87 mm.
Cigar wrapper color varies from green (Double Claro or Candela) to black (Maduro or Oscuro) with a full range of browns in between.
Colorado maduro wrapper is milk chocolate brown.
Machine-made cigars may be completely assembled by machine, or they may be bunched by machine but the wrapper is placed on the cigar by hand.
Altadis U.S.A. is one of the world's largest cigar manufacturers with over 5,000 employees. They have been making cigars since 1918 with factories in the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Puerto Rico, Florida and Richmond, Virginia.
The wrapper is the last tobacco leaf to be rolled on the cigar, so it is the one the smoker will see.
Tobacco is grown in many islands of the Archipelago, but Central Java (Vorstenland) and East Java (Besuki) give fillers and wrappers in abundance. Java or Besuki TBN, is a shade grown cigar wrapper developed in the 1980s from a cross of the Besuki and Connecticut varietals. TBN stands for "Tembakau Bawah Naungan" which means "tobacco under sheet".
The binder is a full tobacco leaf that is used to roll the cigar, binding the filler tobaccos together.
Dominican Republic is a traditional tobacco-growing country. In the 60's, a Cuban seed was introduced and the resulting tobacco, called Piloto Cubano, became famous as a good substitute of the Cuban tobacco that was no longer allowed to enter the USA. Piloto Cubano is full bodied while the Dominican Olor tobacco is milder but more aromatic.
Filler is the term used to describe the tobacco inside a cigar or the "guts" of the cigar.
